“Professor X” Knows How to Stay Relevant in the UFC

Undaunted by his decision loss to Denis Kang at UFC 97, Xavier Foupa-Pokam (“Professor X” to his friends) is doing the best thing a new UFC addition without a victory in the Octagon can do – he’s fighting again right away and on short notice.  A knee injury has reportedly forced James Irvin out of a bout with Drew McFedries at UFC 98 and Foupa-Pokam has stepped up to fight McFedries in his place, and why not?

McFedries is 7-5 overall and has lost three of his last four in the UFC, all in the first round.  In fact, win or lose he hasn’t been out of the first frame since 2003.  In other words, he’s starting to look like maybe he isn’t long for the UFC, and this could be his last chance to prove otherwise.  

Foupa-Pokam may be taking the bout with less than a month’s notice, but you have to like his chances against a fighter on a losing skid like McFedries.  And as we’ve seen before, if you aren’t going to win all your fights the best way to stay on the UFC’s good side is to take whatever bout they offer you.  God’s speed, Professor X.

Irvin Mcfedries was an awesome bout. Both guys can throw leather but not much ground that was a for sure KO kind of sucks it's not happening

About James Irvin: you gotta love the guy. He's a great fighter with a great attitude. I met him a few weeks ago at his gym in Sacramento, CA. He was nothing but welcoming, humble and down to earth. It's a pitty he's injured again. Wish him the best. Cheers.
