It’s Official: Kimbo Wins Via KO
![]()
(Glass Jaws = Quick KO’s)
It doesn’t appear to be a rumor anymore. The May 31st KO victim for Kimbo Slice will be — God help us — James “The Colossus” Thompson and his glass jaw. The fight will be the main event for the first CBS/EliteXC Saturday Night Fights show, which is set to go down in Newark, NJ. All this comes from “Carson’s Corner”, an MMA radio show hosted by Bob Carson. The show’s team claims to have received confirmation from higher ups at ProElite, though their names were not given.
Ken Shamrock was once mentioned as an opponent for Kimbo, but at Ken’s current level of, um, ability, would that have been any better? Ken would have wanted to take it to the mat, but if Robert Berry doesn’t let that happen, Kimbo certainly doesn’t. So with Thompson looking like a sure thing, Kimbo’s ground game will still be called into question even after the fight because “Colossus” isn’t exactly known for much on the ground other than falling hard to it after being KTFO.
Just to be fair, let’s try and make a case for Thompson. The fighter is 14-8 overall. He was 6-1 when he went over to PRIDE and lost immediately against Aleksander Emelianenko. He then bounced around between PRIDE and other organizations, amassing a 12-2 record by the turn of 2006. Then things got ugly. A May 2006 fight against Kazuyuki Fujita ended in a loss that would send Thompson on a 2-6 skid with 5 of those losses coming via TKO or KO. His last two fights — both losses — ended in him going to sleep thanks to Neil Grove (in 10 seconds) and Brett Rogers.
Let’s look at his positives. He’s not yet 30-years-old, is a big dude at 6′5″ and 260+, and can throw a punch. Out of his wins, only one is via decision (Dan Severn). He has four submissions — two of those being Bo Cantrell-like submissions on strikes. The other two submissions were chokes and both came within his first three pro fights. He’s taller than Kimbo, has the reach advantage, and weighs more. He’s from England, but is that a positive or a negative? Reportedly, he will be training in BJJ to prepare for this fight, but does he have enough time to properly implement it into his attack?
Kimbo has taken down guys bigger than him in a striking match — and yes I am referring to his street fights. Even though we’ve never seen an ounce of ground game from him, he does train with Bas Rutten. Still, this one will stay upright until Kimbo lands a few to the glass jaw. One can only hope that Thompson has either found the hunger for an MMA career again, or he just doesn’t want to be embarrassed with yet another KO — and on national TV — that he can at least find a way to make it past round one. At this point, that’s all we can ask.
As an afterthought, can you think of any top guys available out there who could match-up with Kimbo in a striking match? A certain recently-released UFC vet comes to mind: Tim Sylvia. His contract with Adrenaline MMA is non-exclusive. He’s battled top-tier talent and knows how to throw and go the distance. Not exactly a grappling specialist, he’s lasted on the mat before. It wouldn’t be something to prove for Sylvia, but it would be a helluva’ payday.
But I’m just an ideas man. Do with it what you will.

there’s a lot of top guys that can give kimbo a good match but they are in diff organizations.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I would love to see a match between Sylvia and Kimbo! I only see it ending in one of two ways; a fast knockout or a boring, slow paced decision. Say what you want about Sylvia but he can hang with anyone, and no, I am not a big fan of Sylvia. If Kimbo fought Sylvia and it was a good match, that would instantly give Kimbo some credibility.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
please tell me this is a late April Fools Joke…
if not..
that might be some of the worst match-making i’ve seen in my entire life… no joke..
Kimbo???? vs. Collossus???
Thompson is going to KO’d just from the wind that’s created as Kimbo walks towards him..
all Kimbo would have to do is just walk up and flick him on the fore-head..
or just throw a punch from the other side of the cage, and just the kinetic energy would knock Thompson out..
this can’t be true…
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Kimbo’s a fuckin joke. Tim would KO him in the first.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:24 pm
To the MMA newbies who will no doubt be tuning in thompson looks like an impressive opponent. and to give him some credit, he does have some good skills. that he gets KO’d so often is more a result of him being so reckless; if he tightened-up his defence a bit and focused less on big bombs he would be a lot more competitive.
this is a legit test for Kimbo. thompson’s an experienced, if flawed, figther who is capable on the ground. this isn’t a washed-up loser like Tank or Shamrock Sr. if Kimbo wins - and he probably will - then people have to start taking him more seriously.
that being said, Antonio Silva would hand Kimbo his ass.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
You people have it all wrong. This will be the debut of Kimbo’s ground game. Put him up against someone without one so Kimbo can work him over on the mat.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Obvious may be correct on this one. I for one would like to see Kimbo Ko Colossus with a mean fart from the north south 69 position
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm
What about a Jeff Monson v Kimbo? That would be just about as boring as Sylvia v Kimbo. Is it me or are the super heavys just not that fun to watch? Slow paced oxygen deprived slumber fests for the most part. NOT ALL mind you but for sure a bunch of them…Give me a middle or light weight fight. Yeah the FREAK FACTOR is there with the big boys and even the lamest of them could kick my fat old ass but the real excitement is in the lower weights….and I’m not that fat…
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:53 pm
man thompson went toe to toe with fujita
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I guess he’s not a washed up loser/has been…because he’s a never was and never will be. The guy only gets KO’d.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:16 pm
To be the man, that many want/think kimbo is, doesnt he have to beat the man?…fighting a dude with a glass jaw…hmmm…sounds like a idea match up for ‘big time’ tv….has kimbo ever expressed a wish to challenge himself with better comp. i wonder how many other fighters are cool with thier status quo and content with beating guys they know/should be able to handle, which wouldnt tarnish thier rep.
April 2nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
CagePotato and Kimbo sittin’ in a tree,
S-U-C-K-I-N-G……E-A-C-H O-T-H-E-R O-F-F…
Yeah, Kimbo will probably win.
But who fucking cares?
And stop refering to these bloated fucking nobodys he fought in the fucking boatyard.
Being fat inexperienced piece of shit who is willing to box some dude for a few bucks doesn’t make you a great fighter. Or a good fighter. Or fucking anything except a dude who was in a fight.
Stop fucking referencing “Big Mac” and “Afro Puff” as comparisons to REAL FUCKING FIGHTERS.
Jesus CagePotato Staff. Pull your fucking head out of your fucking ass.
You’re losing credibility as knowledgeable purveyors of MMA news and insight by the fucking truckload giving so much fucking props to this fucking unproven freakshow.
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
It’s hard not to agree with HEY! CAGE POTATO a little bit. the guys Kimbo faced before EliteXC mean shit. Redrum Cantrell would KO those same punks.
i give credit to Kimbo for being sincere, though. he seems to really want this. and he’s a helluva lot more engaging as a personality than 99% of the heavies fighting today.
April 2nd, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I think Kimbo’s team is doing it the right way. Look, there are two basic factors:
1) Kimbo has tremendous marketing potential and
2) Kimbo is still learning real MMA fighting
So, if you take #1 into consideration, you carefully manage who he fights so that he doesn’t get his ass beat and tarnish his star potential before he’s really ready to assume that role. I think it’s smart of his people, and actually a fairly humble move on his part. He could easily come out as a loudmouth saying he would take on all comers and then get his beard beaten in by a top tier fighter and disappear from MMA forever. Taking #2 into consideration, they’re giving him a ride in training wheels for now, and then when he’s ready, and got enough real match experience, they’ll take em off and see what he is for real. I don’t think Kimbo or his people are crowning him as the best heavyweight out there by any means. We just can’t wait to see him against top flight competition, which I’m sure will happen, but let’s not crown him king, nor bash him to death either. He is what he is - an intriguing fighter with a lot of potential who still has to earn some stripes, which he is in the process of doing.
And BTW, while I don’t agree with everything on this blog, if Cage Potato were really on Kimbo’s dick, he’d be in the power rankings, but he’s not, so chill!!!!

“if Kimbo wins - and he probably will - then people have to start taking him more seriously”
hate to break it to you.. but that will never happen..
i suppose Thompson has some wrestling skill.. i mean, he looked good in that last fight, until he got KTFO’d, and i’ve sort of seen him impliment his wrestling game before [that is, when he’s not going crazy on the feet and getting KO’d]..
but we ALLLLL KNOOOW that:
if thompson beat Kimbo.. everyone would be like.. “ohhh, i told you Kimbo’s ground game is weak, Thompson’s a beast!!”
but, if Kimbo beats Thompson.. everyone will be like “ohhh, Thompson’s horrible on the ground.. anyone could beat him!!”
Kimbo will never get love in MMA..
which is a damn shame..
no one will ever be a formidable enough opponent for Kimbo for the Kimbo haters to stop hatin’..
if this bout goes longer than 30 seconds i’ll be absolutely amazed..
which is ridiculous for the premier of MMA on such a national level..
April 2nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Rich S. - Kimbo will get respect when he beats a “top ten” opponent, he will raise eyebrows if he beats Thompson (even though he does have a glass jaw).
There are “Kimbo Haters” out there because he is getting paid more that most heavyweights out there without “earning” it… and it represents potential bad news for MMA in general. Overall, at least for me, he will not get my respect until he is tested in a fight with an opponent that is in the top ten.
OR
Kimbo will get respect if he comes out with a rap album and does KFC commercials..
woops… how do I delete that?? shit
April 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I agree completely. He is a fucking SIDESHOW. Until he beats someone that makes everyone sit up and take notice (not slamming themselves to the mat and tapping like a bitch) he will be nothing more……
April 2nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
James Thompson will be the next Buster Douglas. Kimbo will get cocky. He’ll be blinded by the CBS contract. He won’t train hard enough. Then BAM! It all comes crashing down.
April 2nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Kimbo will anhillate Thompson. Thompson has lost his size and power since he came to the US (the words drug testing come to mind) He was never a skilled fighter in the first place and six months at Extreme Coutre has done nothing to improve him. Which leads me to ask the question, is he simply too dumb to learn the skills needed to be a top level fighter. As much as I think Kimbo sucks, I’m jacked at the prospect of seeing him KO Dumbo Thompson the fuck out and sending his sorry ass to the WWE where it belongs.
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
This fight will end quickly with Thompson sucking his thumb crying like a little bitch. Thompson will try to take it to the ground, kimbo will sprawl and then KTFO of him.
April 2nd, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Are you guys serious? James Thompson is a pretty decent fighter.. he almost beat Fuujita and he beat Don Frye recently.. he’s also a very respectful fighter with a lot of heart and he’s improving a lot. But I guess it’s easy for you guys to just talk shit behind your keyboard like you know every single fact in MMA, and act like you guys have a much stronger jaw than Thompson..
April 2nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm
fedor vs kimbo???
April 2nd, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Previous to tonite’s embarressment I would have been excited to see Houston Alexander vs. Kimmie Slice. I just think there vicious stand up style would make for an exciting, albeit, short bout. Maybe there is still some marketability to this?
- Fuck you.
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:37 am
Colossus is a perfect candidate for a 1st rund KO. Great marketing move my EliteXC….we all know that their plan is to expand Kimbo’s fan base and promote their new deal with CBS. If that wasn’t the case then Kimbo should atleast be fighting Brett Rogers.
April 3rd, 2008 at 12:17 pm
EliteXC/ CBS are going to take Kimbo’s internet popularity and multiply it by thousands of flaming skull t-shirt clad high school kids who have no idea what ne-waza means. they’re gonna wipe their asses with cash in the executive washroom at CBS. after he beats ten or twenty glass jaw losers everyone will be screaming “give him a title shot”. They will, on pay per view for 39.95. it’s one step away from WWE.
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Uh says “he almost beat Fuujita and he beat Don Frye recently.. ”
Yeah but he got KTFO by Fujita and floored by Don in the opening seconds of the fight. The only reason Don didn’t finish him was because he was fighting with an injured knee and couldn’t go to the ground. Thompson is just lucky he got to fight the big name fighters when they were injured or had little notice to fight.
Any time he fights anyone even slightly prepared he gets KTFO.
Broughton fucked him up!
Butterbean stopped him, by grazing his chin!!
The big fat guy Grove from cage rage nearly killed him!!!
Brett Rogers Ko’d him and exposed him as a chump!!!!
Thompson is a bum, and is going no where soon. He has ugly stand up, slow and uncordinated. He uses the same predictable tactics time after time- bull rush and brawl, then get Ko’d.
Thompson is no fighter, he is just a juicer who had a bit of luck. But what pisses me most is not The fact that I have to watchDufus Thompson lumber around the cage looking like a kid who shit his pants and needs to get to the shitter real quick. But the MOFO’s who keep promoting this bum as having potential. He is a E class fighter who makes a good stepping stone for anyone with ambitions to get noticed.

Kimbo Is Getting Paided, Cant Be Mad At That.
April 5th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
If we’re just saying any fighter that we’d like to see fight Kimbo, I’d like to see him take on Aleksander Emelianenko. He killed Thompson in Thompson’s debut in Pride. A.E.’s stand up is excellent, I think it’d be a good match up.
Thompson, to give him some credit is pretty exciting to watch for the first 30 seconds of a fight until he slips up and gets KO’ed
April 7th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
”Even though we’ve never seen an ounce of ground game from him, he does train with Bas Rutten.”
umm Yeah, fighters don’t become great through osmotic proximity.
Plus, Bas was only OK at submissions even at his peak.
April 8th, 2008 at 5:59 am
I agree with HEY! CAGE POTATO…..
April 17th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
fuck you
