This Gets You $75,000?

As previously reported, Jason MacDonald picked up the $75,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his handling of Joe Doerksen at UFC 83. In case you haven't seen it, the video is above (and if the vid goes down, there's an animated gif of the fight's end after the jump). MacDonald put on a brave performance, white-knuckling through a deep kimura attempt by Doerksen in the first round, before taking Doerksen down early in the second and clubbing him with elbows until the fight was stopped.

Well, sort of stopped. Check out the 8:37-8:46 mark — it looks like Mazzagatti tries to stop the fight, but MacDonald presses on and throws three more punches into the face of Doerksen, who's clearly unconscious by that point. Big John (or even Big Dan) would have thrown MacDonald across the cage, but Mazzagatti can only ineffectually flap his arms. Maybe it was bad sportsmanship by "The Athlete," maybe bad reffing is to blame; in any case, I don't think this chaotic moment should have earned anybody 75 large.

Terrible sportsmanship. I was one of Jason Macdonalds fans before the fight, but this is just terrible and makes him look like an ass.

I put the blame on Mazzagati for that one. He should've been more deliberate about the stoppage.

Yeah I'm with you Luke. I'm not sure what Doerksen did to deserve that but it was very unprofessional and only takes MMA back a few steps. I'll be looking for the athlete to get knocked out just like he did Doerksen.

To top it off he gets a bonus for doing it.....I guess everyone just forgot about this or they were to busy with the running man starnes?
First Manny with his BS now this goon move from Macdonald.

Mazz's fault, he didn't make it clear that the fight was over. Just waved his hands then when Jason looked up, Mazz was just kneeling there and looking down. Why would Jason McD take a chance on his big payout for the fight if he wasnt sure and just sit there while his opp. regained his composure.

You gotta dive in between them and make contact with the fighter if he's gunna call the match. Should Mazz know this?

It was bad reffing. McDonald stopped to allow the ref to call it and Mazzagatti told him to keep going. Here is a post fight interview where he dicusses what happened:

I don't think it had anything to do with being unprofessional. Put your self in his place. If you didn't know if the fight was over, would you continue to punch until someone had to restrain you to make sure you won that prize money?

Looked like when he got up he was pissed at someone, I'm willing to bet it was Mazzagati cuz he stopped the fight wierdly.

Ref's fault,
I mean he has a history of terrible reffing, he looked about ready to stop the fight (kinda like the lesnar fight and probably many more that dont come to mind) then he never touched macdonald or tried to get him off, mazz backed off. Well folks in any sport they teach you to play the whistle and until the ref comes in to break them up macdonald shouldn't have stopped, I mean it's not worth possibly getting a loss (highly unlikely in this case but still) because you didn't read the ref properly. Fire mazzagatti, macdonald was in the right but I'm no fan of his.

You can't blame Mazzagatie for this one. He doesn't throw fighters off like some other refs but Mcdonald seemed to stop for a sec and then unloaded some more.
The elbows I could let slide somewhat but the punches afterward.....A#1 Ass of the year.

MacDonald claims that Mazzagatti admitted his mistake of not intervening after 'Athlete' threw that series of elbows(http://www.sherdog.com/videos/videos.asp?v_id=1549). During the fight MacDonald clearly stops for a moment thinking that referee is about to call the fight and looses the advantageous position. My opinion is that it would be a great injustice if MacDonald had been stripped of the money bonus, ultimately because of Mazzagatti's indecision. The whole situation proves only that Mazzagatti is a terrible referee.

Watch the youtube link above, it explains what happened very clearly - it wasn't MacDonald's fault.

I'll pile one - Mazzagatti was tentative with the stoppage, MacDonald looked up at the ref to see if he was calling it, didn't get that indication, so he went back to work.

Mazzagatti never even laid hands on Macdonald, and you can see this! Macdonald even postures up and looks at Mazzagatti then pounds a few more times.

For those people who think its Macdonalds fault, are fools. Get a new ref.

its not like Mazzagatti has a history of terrible calls.....................oh wait.

That looked like Mazz's bad. He seemed like he wanted to stop it but he backed off. MacDonald looked happy to stop, but Mazz seemed to signal that the fight wasn't over so Mac hit him again. This was indecisiveness by the ref.

I gotta agree that was mazzagatti's fault. Macdonald stopped throwing elbows and looked at mazz, mazz did not do anything to indicate to the fighter that it was over. I think herb dean is the worst referee in ufc, but mazzagatti is second.

who cares? the dude took a couple more punches.. if u dont like it go watch figure skating u pansies. i dont think that deserved "k.o. of the night" 75,000. i didnt watch any of the undercards because i was already bored to death from the main card... but was that the only k.o. of the night??

Yeah it didnt look good on McDonald's part, but then again it was a typical Herb Dean/porn Stache well, ah, um should I, no well, no(arms starting half assed to wave off fight) well, stop, no ,weh, ah, um, ok stoppage.

Both him and Herb Dean have both looked clueless in stopping fights. boith have stood over an opponent within inches sometimes and HALF wave teh fight off and just look really UNCERTAIN of what they about to do

from what i've learned, the fight isn't over until the ref makes contact with the winning fighter in a case like that. mazzagatti never jumped in between the two. i can't really tell from the angles they're giving, but it looks like macdonald was looking down when mazz waved his arms the first time. seemed to me like mazz was just moving in to make sure that doerkson was really out and didn't really intentionally stop the fight til after the punches. if it had really been over with the elbows, mazz would have waved again when macdonald looked up at him. not bad sportsmanship on macdonald's part, and if anything just a slow move on mazz's.

and lay off us referees. this shit isn't easy, every stoppage is bound to piss somebody off.

hmm im hung on this one, while i agree it was a late stoppage, how much shit did refs get only 2 and a half weeks ago for early stoppages?

Getting the knockout with the very same arm that was cranked so hard 9 out of 10 fighters would have tapped might have earned him the knockout bonus.

I would much rather see a fight end where there is no doubt he got knocked out than see the early stops and tantrums that follow. i.e. Karo Parysian, Houston Alexander, and others. When only one guy is able to stand up for the official announcement, somebody got KTFO.
Good job Steve "earn your money" Mazzagatti.

Okay after watching the gif a few times it looks like it might be due to poor reffing as Bundy says. Maz waves the fight off and stops as he slides in. Jason looks at Maz, Maz doesnt say anything, Jason starts pounding again.

Okay Jason, I'll be your fan again.

Mazzi's fault I think. He is looking down at him with a 'whadya think Jason? Is he fucking dead or what? Give him a couple of shots and wake him up."

Mazzagatti's an idiot. Worst ref ever! He makes Herb Dean look like Big John.

I would have to blame Mazzagatti completely... It would have been very difficult to distinguish what he was attempting to convey in the heat of a fight. Was it not Mazzagatti that also ruined Dwane Ludwigs knockout record with shite reffing?

Look's to me that it comes down to bad reffing not Jason MacDonald fault.

You go until the ref tells you to stop. What else could MacDonald to do in that situation?

i think its bullshit. and this shit about watching figure skating? you are one of the douchebag fucktards that give mma a bad name. yeah, its bad reffing, but if youre dropping bombs on a guy's head, and the guy is knocked out, you are an ass, and guess what? you can beat up a guy after he's been knocked out - great. don't even think about the whole "he couldn't tell he was knocked out" thing. if these assholes can see an opening for a submission, they can tell when their opponent is no longer intelligently defending themselves. that's like the dickheads that keep a submission on for five seconds after a tap. wtf? these guys train to feel a tap from their sparring partner - there is no excuse. mazz should get a new job, macdonald should have to give the money back - end of story.

Dearest iii

You are an idiot. MMA doesn't have a bad name. It is the fastest rising sport in the western hemisphere. In this sport, you keep pounding, or choking or torquing until the reff tells you to stop AND physically grabs you. Any half a fucktard knows this. If figure skating's not your thing, watch ballet or something a little more delicate. And while you are at it, watch the Youtube link. Macdonald is one of the classest guys in the sport right now.

iii get that sand out of that scraggle puss, it's beginning to affect your common sense.
