MMA has a lot more of a celebrity/rockstar appeal to it. Does that explain steriod usage? No. But it does go hand in hand with the party scene for a lot of fighters. Shit, if I had that kind of talent and was halfway famous, I'd be grapplin with 2 honeys a night no question.

In the words of Kendall "Da Spyda" Grove, "I'm a f***in' rockstar man, I been smokin' since I was 3."

It IS about most MMA fighters coming from middle class backgrounds. But that only accounts for the recreational drugs.. I don't know what the deal with Roids is..

I think the guy that wrote that doesn't even believe what he's writing. It looks like the article is a product of a pitch meeting..."People are getting sick of stories about steroids in baseball...what other sports haven't we covered...I Know! MMA!"

No one reads MSNBC anyway.

Too bad we couldn't convince some fighters to try "smart" drugs.

"From pro baseball to the Olympics, performance-enhancing drugs are an issue. In the NFL, Shawn Merriman tests positive for steroids, and he’s back after a few games. It hardly even gets mentioned any more.

In the UFC, Sean Sherk tests positive and it’s somehow a sign that MMA is full of slackers and juicers who just want an easy path to success."

My issue is with the fact that its acceptable to the NFL but not MMA.

It's a double standard. and it needs to stop.

Shawn Merriman is just as much a dirty stinking liar cheater as Sean Sherklmeister.

I think if your are going to argue about a cultural difference in mma it has to be that mma fighters and fans may exhibit more "thirll-seeking" behavior, hence more likely to use drugs.
