Dana White Sounds Doubtful About Resigning Andrei Arlovski

(Andrei plays a game of half-hearted peek-a-boo)

With rumors swirling that Andrei Arlovski will leave the UFC to sign with Affliction and take on Ben Rothwell in the July event, the big question about “The Pitbull” is in regards to his contract status with the UFC. Monte Cox recently told Cage Potato that he believed Arlovski was clear of that contract on May 1, assuming he doesn’t decide to resign with the UFC. For their part, the UFC seems to want Arlovski back in the Octagon, but Dana White doesn’t exactly sound confident that it will happen.

Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole recently quoted White as saying:

“It’s funny you should ask me that. We were just talking about Arlovski. We want to sign him. It’s our intention to sign him. But I don’t know. We’re, well, I don’t know. We want to. Whether we will or not, I have no idea. We like Andrei and I know the fans like Andrei. I hope we can do something.”

Is it just me, or does that make it seem like Arlovski is already gone and Dana White knows it? It’s like asking your friend how things are going with his girlfriend and he looks at his shoes and says, ‘I don’t know, man. I like her. It’s just…shit, I don’t know.’ Then he drinks a bunch of whiskey and won’t stop talking about how he’d like to move to Alaska and get a little cabin with a wood-burning stove somewhere and just really experience life.

If Arlovski is out of his contract and not yet signed with Affliction, it may be because the UFC is trying to match their offer. Fighter contracts are typically structured in such a way as to give the UFC the rights to do so for at least thirty days, if not more.

With Affliction spending money like rich, crazy t-shirt barons on this first card, the bidding war for Andrei could easily get out of control. Then the UFC has to decide how badly they want to keep one of the last credible heavyweights in their stable, or if they just want to make sure that Affliction has to dig deep into their Scrooge McDuck money vault in order to get him.

Either way, the winner here is likely to be Arlovski, who will emerge with enough riches to return to Belarus and establish himself as a king. Whether that will affect the current system of government enough for anyone to notice is still uncertain.

  5. Vrax Says:

I think Dana’s just saying that he isn’t even going to consider 800k/fight type numbers. And he knows that Affliction will, whether they can follow through or not.

  6. John Dvorak Says:

Interesting, a guy the west doesnt like is a ‘dictator’… but when american military intelligence prep demonstrators in eastern european countries to protest elections ahead of time, that’s not being a fucking colonialist?
Seems that the only politicians we tolerate are the ones who are willing to sell their country to the highest bidder, anything else is not acceptable.

Politics is like Dana White: tons of bullshit, slanted to make one’s organization/country better.

Stay with things you can handle.

Wheres my tin-foil hat at the man is reading my mind again…..

Arlovski mo money mo money he deserves it if the UFC won’t open there purses screw them.

  8. John Dvorak is a moron Says:

The whole post is about Arlovski, and some jackass has to pipe up about the one line about Arlovski’s country of origin and make it about American “colonialism.” Interesting that Arlovski himself will tell you how much better his life is here than it was in Belarus. Also interesting that you would fault an effort to let people freely choose their leaders as “colonialism.” Same logic you get around a Berekley graduate seminar that talks about what an open and honest leader Kim Jong Il is, but how George Bush is a totalitarian dictator because he wants to dunk a few terrorists heads under water. That kind of morally relativistic crap is what causes the situation for the poor Belarussian people to begin with (and all of those unfortunately forced to endure under communist and “post”-communist tyrrany).

So, to turn it back to the discussion at hand - I hope Arlovski does re-sign with the UFC. I don’t really buy into any of the Ben Rothwell hype, and I would rather see Arlovski make a good run at the UFC HW title. There are still lots of interesting fights in the UFC (Nogueira, Vera, Mir, Kongo, Lesnar, etc. …maybe even CroCop down the road), and I would rather see him rounding out a full fight card than being a sole contributor on a smaller orgs night of fights. The Affliction show sounds good now, but where do they go beyond one or two shows.

    +1 John Dvorak is a moron…

  11. Joe Son Says:

In response to John Dvorak is a moron’s non-political commentary, I see what you’re saying about wanting to see Arlovski back in the UFC, but I also think Affliction could turn out to be a pretty sweet org of heavyweights. I think Rothwell has potential, and if they’ve also got Barnett and Fedor and Aleks Emelianenko and, okay, Tim Sylvia, that’s a good pool to start with. They get Kharitonov and they’re in business.

Who does the UFC have in that division? Mir and Nogueira are out for months due to TUF. Cro Cop’s done with serious fights. Heath Herring’s pretty mediocre these days, as is Cheick Kongo. Then you’ve got Vera, Werdum, Lesnar, a couple new guys, and that’s about it.

I agree we should be wary of Affliction for now, but at the moment they have the better heavyweights, no question.

  12. Anonymous Says:

Is he hesitant cuz he’s one of the few well known heavyweights left?
