UFC 85 Post-Fight Bonuses Take A Pay Cut
(Bundles of ones. That's how I'd want my UFC bonus money.)
Bonus money winners for UFC 85 took home $50,000 each this time around, down from the $75,000 bonuses handed at UFC 84. It's still a nice boost in pay, however, especially considering that three of the four bonuses went to prelim fighters.
Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares garnered "Fight of the Night" honors. Kevin Burns finished Roan Carneiro with a triangle choke to win "Submission of the Night", and Thiago Alves took home "Knockout of the Night" for his face-smashing antics against Matt Hughes.
Is it me, or did Wiman (and possibly Antoni Hardonk) get screwed out of some money for KO of the night? Alves put Hughes away, and that is impressive because of who Hughes is, but it lacked some of the finality that Wiman's KO did. He found Tavares' off-switch and hammered it hard. That seems like it ought to be worth a little something extra, though I doubt he's complaining. He still went home with a lot more spending money than he expected.

I was at last night's event and Wiman's fight against Tavares was clearly the best of the night, submission attempts in the first and then some great stand up in the second, wonderful. Wiman really did turn off Tavares' lights. It took him ages to recover, he was so gone. Definately deserved KO of the night.

Alves for any kind of honor is absolute shit... especially for knockout of the night (I thought Wiman undeniably deserved that particular award). He didn't even make weight. He wasn't even close! I understand cutting miscalculations or the woes of a (supposedly) sprained ankle shortly before weigh-ins but Alves wasn't even close. In fact he was damn near 1/3 of the way to the next weight class.
The fact that he was grossly overweight was insulting to me as a fan. Especially after watching the Spike TV fight hype which was laced with a segment about how Alves is always clubbing and picking up girls. I know that sounds ridiculous but it is how I feel.

whats all the uproar about the weight? look, this wasn't a championship fight, theres nothing to lose here. By not making the weight all Hughes had to do is say " screw him this fight is off!" but he didn't, cause it doesn't matter, so they make it a catch weight, and boom, fight on!
Alves had a bad wheel, it cost him some ability to cut the extra 4 pounds, BFD!
The fact is he still destroyed Matt Hughes, and I love that. :)

I completely agree with B-rad and so did everyone else that I watched it with last night. It is your freaking job to fight and along with the fighting comes MAKING WEIGHT. I think that a portion of Thiago's purse should go to hughes because he couldnt make weight and look there Matt Hughes did because he realizes its a job and he does it.
Hardonk should have at least got a bonus for his nice KO of sanchez last night. The Matt Wiman fight was the fight of the night for us.

when a fighter misses it's complete bullshit, the only excuse to not make weight is if you take the fight in really short notice and even then that isn't an excuse because you shouldn't take a fight if you think you can't make weight.

It hurt to even roll hard. He shouldn't have gotten ANY bonus at all, they should have given that to Hughes as well. The begging for a title at the end was ridiculous!..'I been a good boy!' Are you kidding, dinged for diuretics and then a miss of 4 pounds. He should slide right back down the list, if not up to his own weight class. Hughes cuts MASSIVE weight to get to 170, at least as much as Alves, he's never had a problem with it.

Yeah, I did lose money. The fact that Alves only has 2 prefight responsibilities (make weight and don't juice) and he failed one of them is a huge insult to the fans and the opposing fighter. If Matt Hughes had backed out of the fight, he would have looked like the asshole, and he would have been called a pussy for ruining the card. Fighters go through immense pressure to fight injured and fight opponents that don't make weight. In every sport, the fans take an interest in the player's personal lives. That is a part of becoming a professional athlete and celebrity.

While we're discussing the bonuses, Kampmann also was absolutely robbed. The way he shifted through three different sub-atempts and finaly sunk in the giuliotine was far superior to Burns, who 'just' got lucky when his opponent Roan made an amateur mistake and let himself get triangled.

I've been sleuthing the Cagepotato forums for a while now and whereas Hughes may still have some fans, I don't think I've heard one person talk about him in glowering terms like "precious". If anything, I've heard more shit talked about him than anything.
Most people don't care that he lost. Alves could have been fighting the Stalin and people here would probably still be pissed he missed weight. This is because he bills himself as a pro fighter. And professionals full-fill the terms of their contract.

First want to say I don't like country breakfast Hughes, hate his style of fighting. Didn't care one way or the other about Alves, love the way he fights. HOWEVER, not making weight was a bullsh*t move on his part. Having an injured ankle has little to do with ones ability to cut carbs and/or sweat in a sauna. Only four pounds you say?
Just to give some perspective, I was recently involved with a smaller promotion where the headliner called before hand, and said he could not make weight and he, the organization, and his opponent ageed to a catch weight. TRAP. While one guy has been working his ass off (cardio, food/carb reduction) to get to within reach of cutting to his weight, the other has been training and eating in a way that is comfortable and conducive to maximum performance. One guy has worked his way down to 164-164 (155 wt class), the other is hanging out in the mid to high 170's knowing he is just gonna get a 165 catch weight (as some of you may not know it is easier to cut more weight when you are heavier). Besides the actual weight there are the issues of greater levels of dehydration, and glycogen depletion. The effects these factors have on performance is far greater than someone who hasn't experienced it can understand. I have comfortably cut 14lbs. before, but ask me to cut 4 more; shiiiiiit. Law of diminishing returns, that shit starts to get really hard. Needless to say one guy essentially dwarfed the other at weigh ins, stepped in the cage with big fat full muscle bellies and kicked the guys ass in first minute of first round. BULLSHIT! Unwillingness to face a man on even terms is a form of COWARDICE.
Anyhow, still hate Hughes and glad he got his ass kicked, but don't think so highly of Alves right now either.

Just so everyone knows; UFC level athletes don't really need to be as "big" as you to put you on your back and beat you into a coma. In fact I wouldn't be going out on a limb saying that the average UFC 155er would easily crush the average 200lbs man in the cage, street or otherwise. Especially if your the big, fat, man boob sportin type of troll who comments here between Warcraft sessions and working at Blockbuster, not saying any names(have my suspicions).
