Must See: Andre Galvao Jiu-Jitsu Pwnage
In his first match at last weekend’s World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, Andre Galvao was paired up against someone who clearly wasn’t in his league. What followed was an unforgettably ridiculous display of grappling domination, in which Galvao turned the Mundials into his own personal And 1 Mixtape of jiu-jitsu. At the 1:09-1:17 and 1:42-1:56 marks he’s basically breakdancing on his opponent’s back, and we’d like to see more MMA fighters do the somersault guard-pass that Galvao pulls off at 1:35. Props to StoryLords.tv.

hilarious.
June 10th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Wow. A steamroller (the somersault pass) in COMPETITION? That’s like God just giving you a high five.
June 10th, 2008 at 7:04 am
Am I the only one who thinks Galvao just proved what an asshole he is? At least in the And 1 tour you know what you’re in for.
June 10th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Dont get me wrong, Galvao is a great BJJ practictioner, but to push the guy to the ground like that is bad sportsmanship. I would have gotten up and thrown an old fashioned haymaker into his brown monkey looking face after that.. what a bitch
June 10th, 2008 at 7:12 am
fixed

I think the a-hole was Galvao’s opponent. Did he get his black belt by mailing in a coupon in the back of a comic book? I roll with blue and purple belts that could have taken that guy easy.
June 10th, 2008 at 7:41 am
Guy was a jerk pushing him to the ground like that. Looks disrespectful. Did the guy really deserve that for being less advanced as his opponent?
June 10th, 2008 at 7:45 am
@ Joe Son: Nope, not the only one.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:05 am
whats the name of the song?
June 10th, 2008 at 8:28 am
I usually love everything on this blog, but that is some seriously disrespectful showboating. Unless there is some unknown beef between these two, that is totally uncalled for. No one who has ever seriously trained BJJ could possibly enjoy that.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:33 am
I think Galvao just got frustrated that his opponent wasn’t really blackbelt level. You could tell he was completely outclassed. When you get tooled like that with back control, it’s almost an insult. The push was a little much but I think that was Galvao just being frustrated.
June 10th, 2008 at 8:36 am
@ KG, reality, etc.:
People on the UG forums said Galvao did that showboating stuff in response to an illegal heelhook attempt by the other guy. (Not even sure if it’s seen in this vid…maybe around the 0:54 mark?) I figured he was pissed off about something. If not, I definitely agree that it was over the line. But I figured it was worth sharing…
June 10th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Black belt or not that guy did not belong there. Eddie Bravo did alot of his winning as a brown belt, so belts dont really matter that much if you are trained well. Nevertheless, Galvao was an ass imo.
I think overall this shows how much I hate +Gi jiu jitsu. Looks too much like a middle school fight gone awry. I respect the art and technique, but the take downs and control are terrible with all the gi pulling. Slow motion hockey fighting without the missing teeth (until someone lands a sub.).
Oh and if he was that much better, why not just finish the match?
June 10th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Great display of how to make yourself look like a showboating cnut. Bad sportsman - don’t care about his skills.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:05 am
that was cool but a little insulting. I meen we get that your better you dont have to make a fool out of him
June 10th, 2008 at 10:28 am
The purpose of Jiu Jitsu is to end the fight quickly and decisively. All of that showboating is just being a dick. That is exactly what is wrong with the fight game these days. His Dojo should fine him.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:31 am
…Besides, it’s more insulting to make the guy tap 8 seconds into the fight and just be done with it. That really pissed me off to see, what an idiot.
June 10th, 2008 at 10:50 am
I keep getting flashes of that balance ball video haha. People are so quick to jump to conclusions. 1 dickhead move doesn’t make someone a dickhead.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:49 am
What a douche. Hope that Galvao guy gets owned.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Galvao is a bitch. Open invitation Andre, come on over to 10th planet and either myself, Compella or one of the other guys will treat you to a lesson. If you survive that with your ego intact, maybe Eddie will teach you a thing or two. And we like no gi. Bring your lunch, it will be a long day for you.
June 10th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Andre was complaining to the ref cuz of an illegal tech where the guy was reaping the knee to cause a very heel hookish pressure on the knee which is illegal under the ibjjf rules, so Andre exacted his own revenge. War Galvao
June 10th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Pathetic.
June 10th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
@ Ben G, yep it’s at :53 but is cut off, you can see the man on the bottom wrap for the heel with his left hand, then the scene cuts.
@ JoeRogan; Vids pls?

Name of the song= Andre Nickatina- Public Enemy #7
June 10th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Never heard Andre Nickatina music on a combat sport vid. one of my favorite rappers. not his best song though.
June 12th, 2008 at 4:36 am
Troll job!
June 12th, 2008 at 4:49 am
If that guy had forward rolled any other time than the time he did Galvao would have gone flying. Galvao just stoped on top of him and waited for him to roll.
June 12th, 2008 at 9:16 am
The guy went for a heel hook. Galvao could’ve just tapped and DQed the guy, just like some bitched did on ANY heel-hook-like leg crossing. That guy actually even secured the grip and that was very clear and oblivious and he was doing a heel hook and nothing else.
Gavao is a great competitors and he came out to the worlds to get some medals and here in first or second round some guy attempted to severely injure him and put him off the mats for several months! I thoughts for a bit that he will just break the guy’s arm all the way or do something like that for this. What he did was pretty harmfully and more then appropriate.
June 12th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Bravo would, well, destroy this guy. Not for nothing, but Bravo and Rogan live at the center of the show. As my father used to say, it takes a packed lunch to stiffen a man’s resolve. Galvao needs more than that.
June 14th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Your a retard if you think Bravo could ever beat Galvao
June 14th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
lol @ joe rogan, i love you and eddie ,but i dont see you or eddie beating andre
with guys like leo vieira, robert drysdale, damian maia, pablo popavitch etc etc to train with and in his corner.
Galvao is as sharp as ever, the guy also beat Braulio Estima at the worlds…and i dont see anyone from 10th competing at the worlds or the mundials.
But in any event i would love to see eddie come out of retirement, and fight some of these guys or even Leozinho again!
i still want to see this new Galvao vs marcelo as well.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:27 am
I really enjoyed seeing this BJJ video on CagePotato and hope you will show more in the future (although I understand you are mainly about MMA). Andre Galvao finished 3rd in the open class and was beaten by Roger Gracie, so he got his.
June 26th, 2008 at 7:15 am
There’s one thing that you don’t know about Andre, Joe Rogan (scratch scratch on the neck), he smokes rocks!
Seriously, if someone tried to do an illegal heel hook me, I would have retaliated with illegal moves that are much worse. Heel hooks are for jerks, and there is a reason why they are illegal, and anyone who tries one on you at least deserves a swift kick in the rear no matter where you are.
July 4th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
i think all you galvao haters dont know shit about jiu jitsu, get some smarts on the fucking sport then talk shit pussies!!!!
July 5th, 2008 at 3:05 am
No class
July 12th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Wow, Galvao made that look TOO EASY! Are you sure the other guy is actually a real Black Belt in BJJ. He looked sloppy as hell
July 15th, 2008 at 1:21 am
That was the most hilarious BJJ video I’ve ever seen.
That other guy is the one who should be ashamed, not Galvao. That guy had no business being in the black belts at the Mundials. Where did he buy that belt anyway?
Also, laughing at anyone who thinks Joe Rogan or Eddie Bravo would beat Galvao.
