Rumor of the Day: Wanderlei vs. Thiago?

Wanderlei Thiago Silva Lyoto Machida MMA UFC
(Silva, Machida, & Silva: Attorneys at Brawl)

Via FiveOunces:

According to the June 23 print edition of the Wrestling Observer, [Wanderlei] Silva’s likely next opponent is undefeated light heavyweight prospect Thiago Silva. The bout could take place in October despite the fact that Wanderlei Silva has reportedly asked not to be scheduled to fight again until December.

The Observer indicated that Wanderlei Silva was given a choice of facing either Thiago Silva or Lyoto Machida. A specific reason for why Thiago Silva is considered the more likely option than Machida was not given, although Dave Meltzer indicated that the UFC is having trouble finding willing opponents for Machida.

Damn son, this Machida got everyone shook! But I ain't mad: With their similarly aggressive styles, Wandy vs. Thiago has the potential to be a fantastic fight. Still, the UFC will eventually have to throw one of the Silvas at Machida, because it seems that only a hyper-aggro fighter who'd be willing to literally chase Machida around the cage (and absorb some damage in the process) would stand a chance of beating him. In the meantime, the UFC needs to go to their hungry/struggling 205-pounders and demand that they fight Machida; preferably, their LHWs who are sloppy enough for Machida to submit or knock out (lookin' at you, Lambert). The Dragon will almost surely be fighting for UFC's light-heavyweight title one day — it's time to start getting him over with fans, and he'll need to finish some fights before that happens.

CHRIST ON HIS THRONE PLEASE GIVE ME SILVA VS SILVA!

I like the guy and all, but I believe that Wandy, Rampage, or even Chuck would defeat him. Sure he can beat Tito, in a decision while those other three fighters would destroy him,... I was going to put a "but" in there and found myself at a loss for words.

What the hell is so scary about Machida? It's not like he's going to rip your head off. He's a great fighter to be sure, but mostly because he's hard to figure out. He's not overly aggressive or anything. Christ, Wandy back in the day... now, that was a guy to be scared of.

Machida vs. Chuck would be a sleeper. 15 minutes of who's gonna throw the first punch.

I know it would suck but why doesnt anyone just stand in the cage and MAKE Loyota come after them? Dont play into his game, make him come after you.

Ortiz tried that, he kept backing up into the middle of the cage. Machida just sort of stood there and looked at him.

Why doesn't wandy want to fight again soon? It's not like he over-exerted himself against jardine...

Alright, so...

Machida > Thiago

Wanderlei > Machida
Thiago > Wanderlei

Chuck > Thiago
Machida > Chuck
Wanderlei > Chuck (rematch please?)

Anderson > Thiago
Anderson > Wanderlei
Anderson > Chuck
Machida > Anderson

Machida > Rampage
Rampage > Chuck (obviously)
Anderson > Rampage
Rampage > Thiago
Wanderlei > Rampage (obviously)

Shogun > Machida (I'm sure few agree)
Shogun > Rampage (obviously)
Shogun > Thiago (Shogun has superior jiu-jitsu)
Anderson > Shogun (No win for Shogun on the feet and he can't get a takedown)
Shogun > Chuck
Shogun > Wanderlei (Same as Thiago)

I think that covers the majority of the contenders.

How about Machida/Luis Arthur Caine - and Machida did finish Sokoudjou so yes he has finished fights.

Geez Machida has everyone shook up. Even a lot of you guys. You all seem to think Machida does nothing but back peddle/counter strike. Take the Tito fight for example, Machida was the one moving forward and the first to throw 90% of that fight. Somehow that translates into a counter punch o rama by Machida. Dodging the other guys' counters does not translate into being a back peddler/counter puncher.

Not standing there while the other guy counters just so you can throw one more combo is called smart fighting/not going to look like Wandy any time soon. He's already scored impressively, why stand there and take a chance of eating that overhand right just to maybe land another of your own?

Damn son, LHWer's are straight pussy!! You're funny.

It would be really interesting to see Chuck versus Lyoto, because Chuck is also VERY elusive.

Thiago will win both of those matches, I like wand and lyoto but thiago is good on the ground and is undefeated for a reason.

Actually I like Anderson over Machida. Might happen too, since nobody is taking him. If he gets a fight soon, as in the next 2 months, then the timing should be right for a LHW contender fight between them two.

Anderson in July along with Forest-Rampage. If Machida squeezes in a fight in August, then that will allow a first/another title defense and Machida-Anderson to take place around the end of the year, which would in turn set up a title shot in maybe February.

This is all assuming there are no Middleweight contenders, and everyone wins their setup fights.

Thiago Silva still has at least one more fight to prove he belongs in contention. Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes aren't exactly top tier opponents, yet.

Silva FTW!

It's not that Machida has anyone scared. It's just that no one wants to fight a guy who's gonna run away and leg kick you for 15 minutes. Who would want to fight a guy who's ENTIRE strategy is based around avoiding the opponent? I don't think Machida is very impressive at all, I think he's an opportunistic pussy that doesn't wanna get hit.

Machida is effectively boring. Effective because he'll frustrate you or sleep you into catching a shot. Boring because as stated earlier, his strategy is to avoid any contact from the fighter. If I wanted to go see a bullfight, I'd go to Spain. Give this guy a PRIDE yellow card, even if the cards are suspect.

Tells you something when 8 of his 13 fights went to decision. 2 sub wins, 1 of his 3 TKOs from forfeit. 1 from strikes, 1 by cut.

HARDLY a killer.

And since coming to a cage near you, he has 5 decisions and 1 submission. Not saying a fight has to finish in the first round but when you are supposedly feared, shouldn't you at least have a TKO in a non-K1 fight?

That's what fighters fear. The fight going the distance to see him get the judge's favor.

@ Eugene - Im sorry man but is the Tito fight the only fight of machida's you ever watched because you are the only guy i have ever seen say he actually presses the action in reality nothing is further from the truth.

Machida fights in MMA like its a Karate tournament. He avoids all contact and tries to snap a leg kick or counter left in for a point then backs off. Sometimes i wonder if Machida even knows what a combination is.

Like i said before about Vera not taking the fight with Machida i have never been so happy to see a fighter turn down a fight in my life. I don't care if a fighter loses a fight sometimes. if they fight with heart and give everything they have to win the fight but still come up short. I will respect them just as much as the winner. Machida has not once shown me any type of Heart or intensity in his fights. He fights to get his decision win and go home with a W. I will NEVER respect that.

wanderlie will beat down all those punks
if chuck liddell couldnt put him to sleep who can chuck had enough shot that landed good wanderlie chuck rematch most likely wont go to decision
