Patrick Cote Is Officially Getting A Title Shot, Though Not Everyone Is Pleased

(Be careful what you wish for…)

His split decision victory over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86 may not have been electrifying to watch, but it was enough to get Patrick Cote a shot at the middleweight title. At least, that’s what the UFC is saying.

“He’s getting a title shot,” Dana White said following Cote’s victory.

The question now is, when? The Canadian Press says that after his fight with James Irvin, Silva will most likely defend his middleweight strap against Yushin Okami at UFC 88 in Atlanta, which would mean less than two months between bouts for Silva. Two months after that, they say, is when Cote is likely to get his chance.

Apparently not everyone was happy with Cote’s performance, though:

There was some drama outside the cage after the fight. Manager Stephane Patry said a UFC official — not White — had berated his fighter for the lacklustre bout. Patry said he promptly complained to UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, who assured him Cote would be treated right.

“Obviously it wasn’t the most exciting fight but Lorenzo’s a good guy, he understands,” Patry said.

Now we get to play everyone’s favorite game, “Guess That Mystery UFC Official”. My money’s on Wilder Valderrama. He’s an official, right?

I’m not so sure about Silva/Cote happening by the end of ‘08. Something tells me the UFC didn’t have him commit to three more fights just so we could get two more Middleweight destructions. On top of that, Dee Dubbs is saying to the media (with increased frequency) that although he doesn’t like guys holding two belts simultaneously, he’d make the exception for Anderson Silva.

If Silva destroys Irvin on the 14th, I wouldn’t be surprised to have them use the “pound for pound” justification to either put him at the top of the line for a LH title shot or put him in a fight in December that would (Liddell/Anderson Silva anyone?).

  2. douchebaggery Says:

Cote already knows he will get pwned and his fight with Almeida did not help his confidence.

  3. DROP DEAD JACK Says:

Lets play “How will Cote get his beat down?”. I say 1st round “knee raping” followed closely by 2nd round “rapid punches to melon/crumple to ground/molested by Silva via barrage of limbs.”

  4. mma181 Says:

If Almeida hadn’t gassed out he would have beat Cote just like the 1st round. his conditioning was subpar

what a horrible performance by cote. exactly what did he actually do in that fight? He never really hurt almeida, did nothing from being on top. he shouldnt be allowed to keep the nickname PREDATOR anymore. at least almeida has the “I took time off” excuse(although that is BS as well). I hate hearing that someone gassed. Its 2008, and if fighting is your whole life, you should be able to do it for at least 15 minutes. You hear that Kimbo? the only less deserving UFC title shot i can think of is serra’s. What a fucking joke.

Not to start a huge debate, GSP and Matt Serra are my two favorite welterweights. I know GSP was not himself in their first fight but Matt Serra beat him fair and square…without even attempting to submit GSP. If Serra did not deserve that title shot he would not have won, he went on TUF 4 knowing that the winners would get title shots. What do you mean he doesn’t deserve it. Serra is a good fighter but more importantly a fantastic coach and mentor…don’t hate on him…hate on Hughes.

What about Leben and Bisping for title shots?

First off, it’s a question, use this: ? Secondly, he won a show featuring washed up fighters who ALREADY LOST, some several times. He is the king of the reject pile!! Yes, he got a lucky shot on GSP because anything can happen. Serra beat Pete Spratt, Shonie Carter and Lytle for his title shot. Lytle is the only non-chump in the group. That is still not a very hard road for a TITLE SHOT!! BTW, fuck Hughes and his invisible sky man worshipping ass. I hope he gets bird flu and anthrax on his farm.

  9. FOF Athletics Says:

The most Cote earned in that fight was a shot @ Hendo or Franklin. I hate to make these guys look like the gate-keepers for a Middleweight Title Shot, but if Almeida and Cote are next in line, they need to be. Okami will get owned, we know that, I can’t imagine what will happen to Cote! The sad state of the Middleweight division is becoming clear, good luck scheduling those Joe Silva. Next #1 contender bout: Amir Sadollah vs. Nate Quarry! Anyone… Anyone?

  10. Bootylam! Says:

No more “if he hadn’t gassed”!!! Why don’t you realize that fitness is THE major difference between good and great fighters? When technique and strength don’t work what can a fighter rely on? Stamina! He gassed just means the other guy has more and is better, no excuses.
