Fedor Continues to Waste Our Time

Fedor Emelianenko Zuluzinho PRIDE MMA
(Emelianenko vs. Zuluzinho: Are you not entertained?)

For the last five years, Fedor Emelianenko has traditionally booked a fight on New Year's Eve — always in Japan, usually against someone that has no business being in the ring with him. And despite a hand injury sustained in his Affliction: Banned bout against Tim Sylvia, the WAMMA heavyweight champ plans on keeping the streak alive. "I think definitely by New Year's Eve I'll be ready to go," he recently told SI.com. And could he switch things up by fighting in the U.S. against someone competitive? Like, for example, the winner of "Day of Reckoning"'s Arlovski/Barnett scrap? Not a chance, bro:

Early speculation centered on a rematch of Emelianenko's tremendous points win in 2005 over Mirko Filipovic. However, a representative for the No. 1-ranked heavyweight said it's doubtful the fight would take place at this time. In a bout intended for Japanese fight fans, Emelianenko will likely meet a "judo legend or sumo wrestler."

My first thought is: Wow, does this suck for Affliction. They're staking their fortune to their heavyweight division, but if Fedor and his championship belt won't be available again until Spring '09, all they can offer is a few interesting (though ultimately meaningless) exhibitions. And with Emelianenko's right hand as dodgy as it is, "Spring '09" is only a rough estimate; an injury sustained on New Year's Eve could delay his return to Affliction even further. (Regarding the hand, Emelianenko said: "It just seems the hand doesn't really sustain the strength of the strike. So from time to time I'm going to have certain injuries as a result of that.")

Of course my second thought is: Still with the goddamned freaks? Beating up a 90-year-old judoka or Emmanuel Yarborough interests you more than fighting another top ten heavyweight?

And speaking of Fedor destroying cans in totally meaningless fights, Fighting Fedor — the reality show in which MMA hopefuls compete for the chance to get armbarred in less than a minute by The Last Emperor — is in production and will purportedly launch later this year. Look, I'm not calling Fedor a farce, I'm just saying that occasionally he acts in a way that could be described as farce-like.

Will Dream be around on NYE?

What an asshole.

Everyone needs to get off Fedor's dick. He doesn't give a fuck about the fans.

What a clown. No wonder Dana didnt wanna deal with him. He might be the best but he is a joke.

Fedor is only scared of internet bloggers. Nothing scares him more than someone throwing a rear naked choke on their parent's monitor.

This guy is #1??? Yea he's good but he never fights anyone that he should be.
Fedor just beat Sylvia but that was his first real fight since I think 2005.
I feel if your going to be ranked #1 than you should be fighting challangers not cans in Japan. This is why no matter how good he is I will never see him as a true #1 HW.
Hope Affliction is happy!!

Realistically, whoever he fights on NYE has a pretty damn good chance of putting on a better performance than Tim Sylvia did, yet it's not legitimate? Interesting.

Once there's someone worth fighting again, I'm sure he'll fight them. At this point in time, there's still no clear #1 contender. Sure, there might be by NYE, but coming off of his hand injury into a title match just isn't being an intelligent businessman - and at the end of the day, that's what they all strive to be.

Anyway - what did you all think the purpose of the open contract was? So that he could fight exclusively for Affliction? Don't be stupid.

Sure, I may be what some consider a Fedor "nuthugger", but people are blowing this way out of proportion. We don't even know who he's fighting yet. This is a tradition he has of doing something different almost every NYE. He's fought very different fighters every year since, what, like '03? Some of them have been stupid (Zulu, for example), but some of them have also been legit (Hunt, Nogueira).

Besides, who wouldn't want to potentially see Fedor squash Karapet "BS - I wasn't out, bro!" Parisyan in an open-weight match? ;)

ps: The commenting system appears to be bugged. It's telling me that I'm posting comments too quickly, but I haven't posted a comment in over 24 hours, and I don't think it was even from this IP.

@mayhem

Who is it that you consider #1, then? Captain America? rofl.

He didn't sustain a hand injury on purpose and if it wasn't for that hand injury he'd be fighting Arlovski next.

As for this NYE event, it's his tradition to fight on NYE to honor his Japanese fans. He doesn't choose his own opponents for those events so if you're unhappy with the quality of opposition, you need to complain to DREAM, the Japanese organizer. Fedor just does what he has to in order to give the Japanese fans what they want. If their dream is to see some legendary Japanese sumo wrestler or judo master versus their favorite foreign fighter, then so be it.

Wake the fuck up.

I have mentioned I thought fedor was shit all along.
Pay attention people, Fedor is a pussy, coward!
A flliction deserves everything they get for investing themselves, and putting their lifes on the line to support that useless fucker.
And NO losers I am not afraid to say it to his face, the dude aint bulletproof, and Im not a MMA athlete, so if I say my opinion to him and he attacks me, he would be a deadman, cause I don't play that shit.
I don't care to see has been crybaby Randy Cuntoure fight Fedor, I am not interested in seeing anything from Fedor, hes overrated, and completely unprofessional.

mayhem420,

Funny because those "cans" in Japan lasted longer against Fedor than Tim Silvia, a 2-time UFC HW champion, did.

And Fedor already dominated the current UFC HW champion twice.

Wake the fuck up.

maybe randy couture?? And for all you pussies talking shit on fedor, grow the fuck up man. Just becuase hes not fighting in the us or against someone you know doesnt mean shit. Tim sylvia lasted what a whole 38 seconds or soemthing.

Amazing. UFC Fan, are you wearing a Michael Phelps wetsuit? cuz you just shattered the keyboard warrior world record.

I'm done with this mother fucker, this is why he is NOT the best fighter ever. He would fight a 4 year old if it meant a big paycheck, a fighter fights goddamit a true warrior isn't bitching saying "oh well my life sucks I only make 10 million a year and I want 20 million cuz I have nuthuging fans" your glorious days have been long over Fedor, keep fighting underachievers and no names faggot.

this clown could care less about north american fans! 30-1 record is a good record but does it really count when 80% of your opponents are cans? i think not!! he doesnt deserve to set foot on north american soil!! stay over in japan where the fans like that kind of trash!!!

and this is why fedor is not the p4p champ.. fighting these fuckin clowns that mean nothing while dodgin top fighters... so all u fedor nuthugger can enjoy him fightin anther fuckin can .. instead ill be watchin the bj vs gsp around that time...theres no fighter top level fighter more that buffers his record more than fedor

FUCK FEDOR!!!!!!!!!

No I dont consider Randy #1 either....
Right now I dont know who should be ranked #1
Fedor would be if he fought quality fighters. Tim Sylvia is a big guy with a good reach, I wouldnt call him quality though. Just a step up from Hong Man Choi and those other "fighters" that he gets booked.

I'll admit that he's good but since he does not fight top guys each time, he should not be regarded as #1.

Since 2005:
Mirko Filipovic 2005
Wagner da Conceicao Martins 2005 5-4 fat guy
Mark Coleman 2006 OLD
Mark Hunt 2006 OLD
Matt Lindland 2007 Natural MW
Hong Man Choi 2007 WTF
Tim Sylvia 2008 Mehhhhh

Oh yea thats an impressive record for a #1 HW in the world.
All I am saying is to be the best you need to beat the best all the time. It just seems like he is padding his record. Just to keep up the mystic that is Fedor.

At least Kevin Iole mentioned what happened in the Sylvia fight and what it meant.
It got Dana White himself to change his hating opinion on Fedor (for about 5 seconds)
,but not the dumb*ss writer of this article!

All the disparagers out there share what Mayhem420 pointed out. Some subjective time frame that's supposed to define Fedor (and simultaneously ignore BJ Penn's, Anderson Silva's and GSP's losses, BTW) and discredit all the major MMA publications top 5 competitor - Tim Sylvia!

How the hell did this artical have anything to do with
BJ Penn’s, Anderson Silva’s and GSP’s losses. ..... were we not talking about Fedor not fighting top guys.
Sorry I must have missed something.

cans o yeah he has fought everyone in his weight division and won, anderson silva the p4p champ just fought a terrible fighter in the sandman and went down rather easy. fedor fights cans is such a load of crap he has fought a f load of awesome fighters and made them look like crap. name 1 guy that he hasn't fought that would give him a fight. for all of the kids out there who think fedor is a can pick up the dvd pride fighting the decade and see what the f fedor is about. wake the f up

So by being able to provide the name of a heavyweight fighter who is better than Fedor, are you essentially agreeing that Fedor is the best? 'Cuz that's how it's coming across.

He's beaten EVERYONE that he has ever fought (except for Tsuyoshi Kohsaka in their first match, and anyone who disagrees that that wasn't a BS "technicality" call and should have been a DQ/NC is an idiot). The list includes: Schilt, Herring, Hunt, Nogueira, Babalu, Arona, Fujita, Goodridge, Coleman, Randleman, Ogawa, Fujita, Crocop, Sylvia, not to mention that he beat Kohsaka in a legit match, and that the winner of AA/JB is going to get demolished as well (Everyone knows it's true, as much as I love AA. :( ).

Which fighter in the world right now has a resume that looks anything like that, with as many "big name" fighters?

People said they wanted to see him fight a legitimate fighter to justify his ranking on worldwide P4P charts. He beat Sylvia, who at the start of the year was a top 3 ranked HW, and still, you babies just won't accept it.

WTB [edit button], PST.
"So by *not* being able to provide..." is how that first sentence should have read.

On the plus side, with my lack of proofreading I'm a shoe-in for a job at just about any major blog that I choose to apply to!

Fedor has proved himself.

Time to make big bucks before he gets discarded as a wash out/old/burnt out/fat/ugly/shitty/stupid fighter by the so called MMA fans.

You are all americans douche bag and keyboard warriors who act like stupid fans without knowledge.
I lol about people who believe that MMA is only in American. 2 years ago , the UFC was the B league.
You should stop to bash fighters you don't know. If you have no knowledge, shut up.

Fedor will fight in Japan, where the competition can be really good. By exemple, Choi was an harder opponent than Sylvia. Some people will never learn.

Yes , he is a "freakshow" , but like Lesnar. Choi is better than Lesnar.

what about all the sambo championships, he dominates everyone he's ever fought, lesnar desrves to get his ass handed to him, the only problem is the ufc heavy weights are so shitty that there isn't anyone left to beat the shit outta that cock smoker. lesnar's a piece of shit

Affliction should put up 8 of there best heavy weights and the ufc should put up there 8 best heavy weights and see what happens. should be a christmas gift for mma fans through it together on dec 24. As long a fedor fights affliction all the way, there should also be a lhw tournament for the guys in the ufc there is alot of decent fighters in that division the only way to make it fair is a tournament,

W. Silva
griffin
Silva
Liddel Liddel
Evans
Silva
Rampage
jardine
Rampage ????? f yeah
shogun Shogun
machida Rampage

tournaments suck, what the f, you are a fucking tard stfu before you make yourself look even worse.

NYE in Japan is about as mainstream as mma gets. The top watched fights of all time (by far) come out of NYE, and thats exactly what its all about. If you havent realized that NYE is all about crazy match ups that appeal to the casual fan by now then you are pretty dense.

I really dont think Affliction is too upset since they have been aware of this all along. People do realize that months before the Sylvia fight Fedor let his plans to fight on NYE be known? You try and write your article like Fedor is about to miss several Affliction shows when in reality he is going to miss one (which he couldnt train for anyway due to injury).

Its funny to look at people do revisionist history
"No wonder Dana wanted nothing to do with him" - Guess thats why Dana desperately tried to sign him to a record contract and still leaves the door open for him to fight in the UFC.

Fedor dominated Nog twice (only unavenged losses that Nog has) and just beat Sylvia in 36 seconds and people out there are still dense enough to wonder if he is for real? Jesus. Are these people going to bag on Nog and Anderson for having title shots upcoming against fighters outside of every major top 10 list?

The way Japanese mma is struggling its all about generating ratings, not pleasing a bunch of 13 year old keyboard warriors.

Doesnt it suck when athletes arent tied down by contracts and can sell their services for big bucks?

Between having some guy frozen out like Arlovski and others were and a guy accepting offers to make money wherever he can, I'll choose the latter.
That some dumb yankee UFC reality living homos can be insulted and take it personally that Fedor will not be fighting in the US is really the cherry on the sundae.

As for opponents, Fedor whipped an ex-UFC champ, twice beat the current UFC champ and the rest of the UFC HW are a total joke. So nothing to see there of any interest.
As for Afflliction, Barnett or Arlovski could be interesting but I honestly dont know who can stand with Fedor. (please dont say old man Couture)
All the shitheads who are whining should put up their top 5 HW Fedor SHOULD fight.
It will mainly consist of the names I just mentioned.

There will be no crosspromotion with the UFC so that's a moot point but a tournament is a good idea. Put all the 200+ guys together and have them fight it out in one night. And even the DREAM tournaments spread throughout the year give a nice sense of continuity.

I didn't read much of the article, as I get extremely bored with worrying about what is actually said in these things - much like Matt Hughes watching an WW Championship fight that does not involve himself. I usually just prefer to provide nitpicky comments on the grammar and word usage used on internet blogs, because it makes me feel superior to point out small, insignificant flaws in others.

So I was equally appalled/overjoyed when I skimmed over this last line: "Look, I’m not calling Fedor a farce, I’m just saying that occasionally he acts in a way that could be described as farce-like."

So he could be described as "farce-like," huh? I don't know which of you two Bens wrote this (was it Ben Feldman or Ben Haim?), but the word you are looking for is "farcical," not "farce-like."

Farcical. Got it? It is a little like Fudgesicle, only spelled differently and not as tasty (although it is probably tastier than when the fudgesicle has been in your freezer for a long time, and gets covered in all of those little ice particals that are really rough on your tongue and kind of ruin the overall flavor and enjoyment of the thing).

I hope you learned something. Now I will return to my MySpace page, as I need to add another couple of pictures of Navy SEALs recruiting posters so I can look cool when telling Tila Tequila and all of my other friends how my SEAL training is going from my Mom's basement.

Nice "The Foot Fist Way" reference.

haha ufc was the b league couples year ago yea okay.. that why they been running for over 15 years and bought pride.. and most the pride superstars started out in ufc and will prolly finish

We Americans just can't comprehend that globally, there is a lot more than the UFC's monopoly on our hard-earned PPV dollars. It's sad that we want our trusted name brand to succeed more than we care about competition and freedom of fight choice. Mr. Emelianenko Fedor is completely justified in his decisions- it is his body and his financial future. How can he not want to please the Japanese fight fans? They are more interested than us.......ESPN plays classic car shows but not MMA, for f's sake

Americans can't comprehend what??? that is about the most rereretarded thing ever typed on a keyboard. We want the UFC to succeed becasue they are who started the massive explosion that is mma... lets face it if not for the UFC there wouldn't be an mma fighter out there making even $50,000 a fight. and as far as competition goes everbody's beloved fedor refused to sign a contract with the UFC because of undisclosed reasons, so who is taking away the competition?
fact is if you are good enought to be in the UFC dana white will put you there, if not go fight in a bar somewhere in the middle of nowhere!

NEWSFLASH: Fedor Emelianenko to fight Bugs bunny early next summer!

Pretty lame article.

You have been listening to G. Dog White a litte too much.

You sound like a Sherdog TUF nuthugger with this garbage.

Damn stupid americans Fedor fights where the real MMA fans are.......you dont understand technique, diversity and MMA. You fucking retards voted for Bush twice.......!!!! if it isnt 2 big fucking dumbass´ from USA slugging it out you dont understand and start buuuhhhin......Obviously none of you fucks ever saw a Pride tournament or Vale Tudo......UFC sucks let the american sluggers slug it out

UFC champions respect Fedor Emelianenko:

"Q: Who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world?
A: Fedor Emelianenko"
- Georges St. Pierre, UFC Welterweight Champion (Inside MMA, 9.20.08)

"Fedor is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world."
- Randy Couture, Former UFC Heavyweight Champion (Affliction "Banned" Promo, 7.2008)

"Fedor is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world aside from BJ Penn. Those 2 are the best fighters in the world."
- Quinton Jackson, Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion

"The best fighter ever to climb into ANY arena is Emelianenko, Fedor. There's nobody better. He is the best fighter I've ever seen, fought, trained with, everything. He's been through some hard shit too, and that's what you need in this. Some people come to this, and learn how to be tough. And then there are people who are just tough and are just trying to learn how to be better fighters. Fedor is just tough, and he is a great fighter. He's in his own league and you can't compare nobody."
- Kevin Randleman, former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Pride Special on Fedor

"Fedor has no weakness! I have seen so many fights, and even the best fighters in the world have a flaw in their game. But, I have yet to find one in Fedor Emelianenko."
- Bas Rutten, Former king of Pancrase and UFC Heavyweight Champion, FSN

"He [Fedor Emelianenko] is the BEST."
- Mark Coleman, former UFC HW Champion and Pride GP Champion

"To beat Fedor, you would have to kill him twice, and then push him over"
- Nogueira, current UFC interim Heavyweight Champion and former PRIDE Heavyweight
