“It was interesting…karma comes around. Honestly what I thought of it was that Karma’s a bitch with a red dress.” — Houston Alexander on James Irvin’s loss to Anderson Silva. Alexander also told TheMMANews that he’s renewed his UFC contract for an additional four fights.

“Joe Silva was telling me to lose some weight and gain some muscle. He said I need the UFC look.” — Roy Nelson on the UFC’s “No Fatties” policy. Luckily, Affliction is a judgment-free zone.

“We know how to beat Anderson Silva. The only way to beat him is to push the pace. Go forward all the time. You can’t let him get confident and comfortable in the centre of the Octagon. You have to push the pace for five minutes every round. If I do that, I can catch him. I’ll take care of him.” — Famous last words from Patrick Cote.

“I would fight any one of the UFC lightweights, but the problem is that I will never put my foot in the octagon after they (UFC) tried to be funny. I would rather have bleeding hemorrhoids than fight for the UFC. The Japanese MMA audience is the best in the world. They make magic! I would rather have one true Japanese MMA supporter than one million fake mainstream supporters that will turn their back on you as soon as you lose a fight. I don’t care about things that are mainstream.” — Joachim Hansen, who was offered half his contracted salary by the UFC after Zuffa bought PRIDE.

“I think that shot pretty much changed the whole dynamic of the fight. I sure would like to know what would have happened if it hadn’t landed. Once that right hand landed it was like I was fighting half blind, or pretty much blind at that point. It was all pretty much downhill from there. I just tried to come back and mount some type of offense. Unfortunately, I was never able to mount anything that significant…After getting rocked with a shot like that, and not being able to see, you’re more in survival mode.” — Heath Herring on the fight-opening punch from Brock Lesnar that sent him ass-over-teakettle.

  1. bc Says:

Poor cote. I mean he has a puncher chance…. but it’s slim to none, and pushing the pace like that is gonna get him ktfo just like leben.

Heath Herring is full of shit. The fight would have went the exact same way I’m sure. He had a couple chances to make things better but he didn’t. He spent almost the whole fight turtled.

  2. douchebaggery Says:

    I don’t even think Cote has a puncher’s chance( I hate that term)….

also, wtf is Houston Alexander talking about? lame

  3. rolltide Says:

Why’s Houston being a little bitch?

  4. Smackdaddiest1 Says:

Houston is still living under the false assumption that his fight against James Irvin was stopped prematurely…. What a tool bag.

  5. ORSUSBAND Says:

did anyone catch how Dan Magilotta (the referee) caught Heath with an eye poke in the beginning of the bout?
I didnt catch it the first time, but i watched the fight again this weekend and there it was a poke to his right eye. that eye caught way too much damage. That’s just wrong. If it were me, my game would have been hurt by that initial poke. But i did like how good Lesnar looked, wish he stood up a little more. Some ground and pound then standing up, then back to the ground. Heath would have been really hurt. Win or Lose i still think they both did awesome and would watch them both again in any fight.

  6. skidding Says:

Joachim nailed it on the dot. Anderson Silva will be trashed to the curb by 95% of American fans when he eventually loses just one match.

  7. Jeff Says:

I don’t think American fans are THAT fickle. Surely much more than the Japanese but it’s not as bad as Joachim makes it out to be. Look at Wanderlei Silva… He’s one of the most beloved fighters in America despite his losses. Same goes for Rampage who doesn’t seem to have lost any fans after losing to Forrest.

Anderson Silva losing would be a different case. People only like him because he’s such a dominant fighter. Aside from that he’s kind of a tool. If Anderson loses, he WILL lose 95% of his fans.

  8. CJ Says:

    Kind of a tool? Whaaaaaa???

If by tool you mean soft spoken and extremely humble/respectful…

Why would people throw a fighter to the curb who has been as dominant and exciting to watch as A. Silva has been?

I think his first loss will probably do very little damage if any to his fan base. Depending on what the loss looks like everyone will probably call it a fluke and look forward to a rematch or his next fight against whoever else.

  9. douchebaggery Says:

A Silva = opposite of douchebaggery

  10. John Says:

I lost a lot of respect for A. Silva when he went back down to middle wieght after demolishing a decent light heavy.

    A. Silva walks around at nearly the same weight as the light heavies, and yet he cuts weight to fight guys smaller than him like Leben, marquardt, Franklin, ect. and demolishes them like it was easy.

Chuck Liddell would look unstoppable at middleweight also. A Silva needs to quit screwin around at middleweight and fight guys his own size at light heavy.

  11. Krazy Kracker Says:

The truth of the matter is Americans are focused on winning, whereas the Japanese audience encourages a spirited match. While Americans love perfection, we love underdog stories even more. That would include everyone who steps into the ring against Anderson Silva. While he is epitome of class, and destroys everyone he comes into contact with, we don’t watch to see him win but the chance/hope to see him lose. Every now and then I see exceptions to the rule. Josh Haynes, I’m not sure I have ever seen a match where he wins, but he gets his face beaten in and loses 3/4 his blood in his matches and I think this is the only reason Dana invites him back. Americans can appreciate people who give it their all even if they fall short. You had better at least show glimpses of greatness, the ability to inflict punishment, or we will send you packing. Bob Sapp should thank God for Japan’s mentality and monstrous appearance; his lackluster performances in MMA would not appease American crowds. Jeff was wrong about Wanderlei. He is a legend of the sport, and should be in whatever Hall of Fames that are created for such, but after three losses in a row (to OTHER legends, mind you) people didn’t think he was going to destroy Keith Jardine? I heard the term “washed up” more than a few times that week. What a short memory we U.S. MMA fans share.

  12. Anonymous Says:

Yeah, A Silva’s frame makes him a giant in his primary division, I believe he was taller and had longer reach than Irvin, too. That fact alone should dissuade people from taking him as p4p over Fedor, whose competition if I recall correctly has consisted of dudes that were either his equal in stature or bigger for the most part. Also, lol @ Randleman and his nigga-squabbles.

  13. CJ Says:

Are you guys fucking kidding me? You’re actually pulling the “omg silva is actually a LHW that’s why he’s so good at MW”???

Do you people not realize that most of the other middleweights walk around over 200 lbs as well? The dudes that fight at 205 regularly are cutting down from even higher up.

Not to mention the fact that if liddell or any of the other 205ers could cut to 185 they definitely would. It would have too big of an impact on their performance though.

Weight management (cutting, gaining, etc etc) is a crucial part of a fighter’s preparation and training. If a fighter can gain and lose weight and still be successful it’s no less impressive. Look at brandon vera, he cuts down to LHW and he had the worst performance ever because of it. And he was a chubby guy to begin with.

It’s absolutely laughable that anyone is trying to take away from Silva’s dominance by saying he doesn’t belong in the MW division. That’s complete idiocy.

  14. John Says:

CJ your an idiot. It does not take a genious to see that A. Silva has a difinitive size advantage against everyone he fights. It also was not difficult to see that Silva was the SAME SIZE as Irvin, who is considered a big 205.

Silva custs way more weight than many other 185. Your argument about if 205′ers can make the cut to 185 they would is bull also. Koschek and St. Pierre have both made the comment that they could make the cut to 155, but they don’t.

Just because you can sweat out 35 lbs of water before a weigh in does not mean you have to. Most 185 walk around at 200 or so. Most 205 walk around at 220. A silva walks around between 210-220 acording to rogan.

  15. CJ Says:

    Okay.

So everyone in the UFC could easily cut weight and gain an awesome size advantage but nobody except Silva does presumably out of some sort of respect for the weight classes or something?

  16. douchebaggery Says:

John is a fucking tool…..I don’t think Silva’s supposed “size advantage” is what allows him to land with pin fucking point accuracy on the chins of his opponents.

it’s not like he mauls guys with brute strength and size and smothers them.

he wins using mainly speed and skill

  17. CJ Says:

John, I’m sorry but you are just plain wrong about this.

You are completely underestimating the effect of cutting weight on a fighter’s performance.

The fact that he’s cutting down from 220 to fight at 185 and being completely dominant is amazing. If anything it’s harder to fight when you’re cutting that much weight, not easier.

Yes GSP and Koschek could cut to 155 and they don’t. Not because they don’t think it’s right, because they would really hurt their bodies trying to do that and it would compromise their readiness to fight.

Again, Silva cutting from 220 to 185 is something we should be giving him accolades for, not accusing him of trying to fight easier opponents.

Also, what do you make of the fact that both rich franklin and dan henderson, two people that Silva demolished recently, switch between 205 and 185?

  18. John Says:

How can you say a fighter should be praised for cutting from 220 to 185 and fighting well? 185 is a lack luster division, 205 is stacked. A Silva is cutting weight from the same starting point as the 205′ers to fight in a weak 185 division.

Fighting guys like Patrick Cote and Rich Franklin (nothing against Franklin) instead of guys like Chuck Liddell and Rampage when you are the same weight as them is avoiding tough competition.

Also, Franklin and Henderson walk around at 200-205, not 220.

  19. CJ Says:

My point is that if cutting that much weight and dominating using size advantage was that easy then everyone would be doing it.

The fact of the matter is that it is NOT easy and people won’t do it because if they do they’ll be too sick to fight effectively.

In all of Silva’s MW bouts he did not look bigger than his opponent. There’s not one fight where you can claim that he overpowered the other guy or was just too big.

Like douchebaggery pointed out, he wins his fights with speed and precision.

  20. John Says:

Im not saying he over powered his opponents. He beats them with skill.

All im sayin is that he was the same size as James Irvin and cuts from near 220 which is where many 205′ers cut from. He clearly is too much for the 185 guys as he always finishes them in the 1st or 2nd.

He def. has been bigger than all his opponents at 185. The only guys close to his size were henderson and franklin who do/used to fight 205. He was clearly bigger than Franklin, and henderson though.

  21. John Says:

Chuck liddell and Randy Couture walk around at about 220.

If they decided to cut weight to fight 185 and did well, would you praise them for fighting well after such a big cut, or would you say they are trying to avoid the tougher competition?

  22. douchebaggery Says:

“Im not saying he over powered his opponents. He beats them with skill.

All im sayin is that he was the same size as James Irvin and cuts from near 220 which is where many 205′ers cut from. He clearly is too much for the 185 guys as he always finishes them in the 1st or 2nd.”

John, this makes no sense. you say his cuts too much weight. then you say he wins by skill. so what difference does the weight make you fucking muppet?

he already said he will fight 205 lbers if that is where the biggest fights are for him.

you really think he is avoiding competition? are you that retarded?

  23. John Says:

douchebaggery: It is possible to use a size advantage to help win with skill you gerk-off douch.

Do you think fighting Patrick Cote insted of a 205 contender is not avoiding competition? If you think Cote is competition for Silva, then your right, he is not avoiding competition.

  24. douchebaggery Says:

“douchebaggery: It is possible to use a size advantage to help win with skill you gerk-off douch.”

that doesn’t relate to Silva’s situation now does it, you one dimensional idiot.

he’s fighting Cote because that is what the UFC wants him to do, I’m sure he would rather fight Chuck or someone who would seem like the bigger challenge.

he wanted to fight Roy fucking Jones Jr in a boxing ring you jackass, you think he is afraid of competition, challenges, or failing?

you are too stupid to deal with. fucking pea brained insect

  25. Fedor Emelianenko MMA instructional Says:

Houston Alexander should get over his loss and start working on his ground game instead. While his knockout loss could’ve happened to everyone, his previous loss on the ground has uncovered his real weakness. Other than that I hope they bring him back to UFC.

  26. John Says:

douchebaggery: Your not even arguing the point about him cutting a lot of weight to fight at 185 instead of fighting in his natural weight of 205.

Now you bring up side points about boxing a guy who is past his prime.

You keep saying I don’t make sence, but thats because you refuse to admit you’ve already been beaten. Just because an idiot like you doesn’t understand something does not mean it is wrong. A. Silva said himself defending the 185 belt is his 1st priority. What does that mean to you? It does not mean he is eager to take on a challenge at 205.

    A. Silva needs to quit wastin our time beatin up guys like Patric Cote and take on some real challenges with the contenders at 205.

  27. John Says:

*natural weight class of 205 (walks around at 220)

  28. Markdog Says:

    I got one:

“I watched the UFC very closely and I didn’t see Georges St-Pierre’s dad go after BJ Penn. You know, I didn’t see any middle fingers being thrown around…But you know, it’s Nick Diaz…You know what your getting into with Nick Diaz. You know what’s going to happen with Nick Diaz when you say, ‘hey why don’t you get in the ring and challenge this guy who beat you before and who you’ve had some smack talk back and forth with. You know, it’ll be just a gentlemanly cordial affair.’ No, Nick Diaz is not gonna go in there and be a gentleman about it. He already has his middle finger up when he wakes up in the morning. And there’s no way that they didn’t know that was gonna happen.” –Ben Fowlkes on UFC vs. EliteXC fight build up (http://mmarated.com/articles/article/news/20080815/the_mmarated_radio_show__cyrille_diabate-16281.html).

  29. Johnkimble Says:

John, you’re so wrong, you’re right. Sort of like if you start at a place, and walk all around the world you end up where you started. You’ve done that with being wrong.

    Rich Franklin is both

    A. A former light heavyweight who was cutting to fight in the 185 division
    B. Bigger than Anderson Silva

Anderson Silva moved up a weight class after cleaning out the entire 185 division. You may remember him demolishing a much larger Rich Franklin, previously considered too big and unstoppable at 185 not once but twice, so you’re wrong there.

Travis Lutter couldn’t make weight for his title fight against Anderson Silva. Does that then make him a substandard fighter? Or are you going to tell me he just ate too many twinkies before the fight. So your opinion on weight cutters is wrong. That’s right, your opinion is wrong, you managed to do it.

Additionally, do you consider bj penn a substandard fighter for dropping to 155, winning the belt, then hopping up to 170 to fight Georges St. Pierre? He fought Lyoto Machita when Lyoto weighed around 205, or is Lyoto now a heavyweight that can’t cut it? (Nice pun, right?). So there, again, you’re wrong.

  30. JohnKimble Says:

John: because i read another of your arguments, i feel bukkaked by stupid, so i’m going to continue to tear you apart until its bed time.

You sincerely think that Anderson Silva isn’t fighting competitors for the 185 belt? Who’s a competitor? Here’s the 5 fighters below A Silva according to wamma’s rankings.

    Paulo Filho
    Rich Franklin
    Dan Henderson
    Robbie Lawlor
    Yushin Okami

Paulo and robbie lawler aren’t in the UFC right now, so he can’t fight them. What do the other 3 names ALL have in common? Think about it……….
THAT’S RIGHT ANDERSON SILVA KICKED ALL THEIR ASSES. And if you consider yushin the actual winner of that fight, you’re a lunatic.

Once again, your facts aren’t correct. Some would say, they’re wrong.

  31. CJ Says:

    JohnKimble you are my hero.

  32. Johnkimble Says:

John, it’s me again. Sorry to do this, but i’m real bored. You said Anderson Silva walks around at 220? Dude, you’re wrong.

    http://www.cagepotato.com/tag/anderson-silva/page/5/
Article name is Anderson Silva Is The World’s Best Employee

“In fact, he seems pretty unconcerned about the whole thing. He told Si.com’s Josh Gross recently that he’s walking around at 212 pounds and is ready to pitch in and do his part for the UFC’s global domination efforts:

212 buddy. Now, that’s after he’d been notified he had to move up a weight class on short notice. I seem to recall an article about him where he says he walks around at 207 normally, which fits right in with the facts i provided for you, but you clearly didn’t have them because you’re so wrong.

Also, Travis Lutter is universally regarded as having gassed out in his Franklin Fight (and subsequently being terminated from the ufc) For…..you guessed it…… exhaustion from cutting too much weight. So as far as weight cutting not affecting your performance, you’re wrong.

So in summary, there’s two more points you’re wrong on. I’ll find more as your opinions become available.

  33. JohnKimble Says:

Wrong update: You said Rich Franklin walks around at like 205. Type Rich Franklin walks around at into google, and you’ll see all the search results speculate 2 things.

!. That he walks around at 220.
    2. That might be the fighter that cuts the most weight in the 185 division.

Granted it’s speculation (from people who’ve met him and claim he’s bigger than arlovski). But it’s a lot of people. A lot of people that all think you’re wrong. I’m one of them.

  34. mma_fanatic Says:

ok fucktards. Anderson Silva is fighting in both weight classes now. Stop trying to make him out to be less than what he is. he is absolutely dominating. everybody forgets to mention that when fedor fights those big ass guys, they also suck dick at fighting. Rich franklin= badass, dan henderson=badass. silva will prob be fighting wanderlei after he destroys cote. maybe they will even throw him liddel or rampage. he will hold both titles in a year trust me.

  35. Anonymous Says:

everyone one cuts weight, John your love for Franklin has blinded you haha. the dude use to be a LHW, im sure he walks around a little more than 205, Anderson Silva walks aroudn 210, if you look at that, both guys can fight at LHW, Franklin is no angel im sure he does the same thing.

Give praise for the man’s skill, if you want to argue size advantage, do it with brock lesnar, not anderson silva

I bet you Anderson Silva can out move Lesnar and beat him anyday because he is that much more skillful

  36. Tpark Says:
