Oh Hell No: Kimbo Slice to Face Sean Gannon?
(This seems like something we should relive on network television, right?)
The rumor mill has been churning this week as to who Elite XC will get to take on Kimbo Slice on their October 4 CBS event, which is being called something of a make-or-break show for the organization. In a new article on Si.com, Josh Gross adds another name to the list: Sean freaking Gannon.
As in, the Boston cop who defeated Slice in an ugly, amateurish brawl back in 2004. As in, the guy who later got a shot in the UFC, only to be trounced by the unremarkable Brandon Lee Hinkle. As in, the guy who is officially 1-1 in MMA competition. That Sean Gannon.
Gross says that difficulty signing Ken Shamrock and concerns that undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers would actually beat Kimbo (apparently that’s enough to nix an opponent for Slice) are making the Gannon bout a very real possibility at this point.
There are many, many reasons why this is an idiotic idea. To name just one, Gannon isn’t an MMA fighter. He hasn’t competed since 2005, doesn’t seem to be actively pursuing a career in the sport, and hasn’t done anything that would suggest he should be fighting professionally on CBS. He’s just a tough guy who once fought and outlasted Kimbo back in his street brawling days. In other words, this fight would be a major step back for MMA, not to mention one that would happen on network TV.
Let’s all hope that this is nothing more than a vicious, hateful rumor. Let’s hope that when Elite XC executives hear of it, they scoff out loud. Let’s hope that when Brett Rogers hears of it, he doesn’t murder whoever is closest to him. Let’s hope, but let’s not be too shocked if it turns out to be true.

Elite XC can’t keep babying Kimbo along and expect the fans to respect him or the organization for it. While I don’t thing sending Kimbo to the slaughter house would be the smartest thing considering the marketing money they have pumped into Kimbo, they should at least present some sort of challenge for him. He is an MMA newb, but he needs to walk the walk at some point. He is a humble guy for the most part, but you can’t market him as much as Elite XC has and then just put Gannon in front of him.

Could anyone expect anything less from Elite XC? They’re a joke and everyone knows it. It’s looking as though this “make or break” show for Elite XC is actually going to break it. Well, i’m keeping my fingers crossed anyway.

If anything I think Gannon should have been Kimbo’s first pro fight, it kind of seems like they want to prove that Kimbo training actually works and he’s a better fighter now….

Still to this day i don’t consider kimbo to have a professional fight. I call upon everyone to not tune in to this shitty event. my point is, is we should all unite to never watch an elite xc event ever again to put this shitty organization into the ground once and for all. They are sending mma back by many years, so let us all take part in sending them into the dirt. make them pay for this travesty, who the fuck is with me.

Nothing against Kimbo who seems like a good guy and might be a good fighter someday, but give me a fucking break. At least the UFC makes Lesnar fight real fighters. This guy’s never going to get better if they keep feeding him cans, and having fights like this on network TV is just bad for the sport.

what an effing joke. is it any wonder the general public does not think highly of MMA and the sport is having trouble losing the “human cockfighting” label? i don’t have anything against kimbo, but he needs to face a real opponent to have any credibility. broadcasting him vs. gannon will just reinforce the fringe reputation the sport needs to shed. shit, on second thought why not make him fight all the other tomato cans he used to illegally smack around behind taco bells. bring back the fat dude with the baby dreads!!!
i’d like to see him fight rogers, but that would expose elite for the turd in a bucket that they are.

i dont really think elite xc cares about bringing along kimbo at this point skill wise, i think they all they care about is drawing more viewers so they dont look like a one hit wonder, at this point if their next cbs show is a do or die for the company because even with the tv deal they are still losing money and if they cant draw alot of viewers on network tv their is no way they will say many ppv’s and that is the main way mma organizations make their money such as the ufc who is thriving because of their ppv success

Gannon trains at my gym. He said he’s been offered the Kimbo fight multiple times from Elite, but he said he doesn’t want to take it b/c the Boston PD (his employer) frowns upon it and might fire him. He didn’t say anything about this rumor today, but I will ask him next time I see him. Also, while he is certainly no Black Belt, his JJ is much better than Kimbo’s and if the fight went to the ground, Kimbo would be done.

It’s no secret that Elite XC doesn’t have the deep roster that the UFC has. However, it’s no excuse for them not to find a quality opponent to prove Kimbo Slice is the real deal. Let’s be honest, is anyone really excited about this match? IMHO, I’m not. They could have ask Justin Elier to fight him, but he’s dropping to 205 after losing to Antonio Silva. Remember that former Pride FC Heavyweight that was mentioned to fight of the Elite XC Heavyweight Title? How about the dude who beat the dude who beat Ken Shamrock? I’m wondering who’s in charge of Elite XC, and when will they stop giving Kimbo another freak show match?
