Epic Fail: EliteXC's Bribery of Seth Petruzelli

Seth Petruzelli: My original plan was to throw a lot of push kicks, they're called teeps...have him think that I'm going to throw 'em to try to rush in more, and then shoot in on him, obviously...I knew I would do alright standing up with him. The promoters kinda hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn't want me to take him down. Let's just put it that way. It was worth my while to try and stand up and punch with him.
Petruzelli says he was paid "in the six-figure range" for accepting the main event fight on Saturday and will be re-negotiating his contract for his next EliteXC fights. I bet the next time EliteXC offers a guy money to stand and trade with Kimbo, they'll be a little clearer about the objective: Don't shoot for a takedown, but also don't knock him out with an off-balance jab. (You'd think that would be implied.) We definitely suggest listening to the rest of the "Monsters" interview, where Seth describes the moment where he knew he had Kimbo beat, what he said to the athletic commissioner afterwards, and the chances of Kimbo/Seth II (and Tito/Seth I). Entertaining stuff...

I really hope Seth Petrucelli makes his money on the rematch. He has all the bargaining power in his hands. Elite XC and all their broadcast television-referee f*ckery needs him more than he needs them. He should be able to go to any other organization.

Isnt this the same thing that Pride used to do? Pay the guy to stand and trade with a person so they could see a "Spectacular" KO? I seem to recall an interview with Rampage where he stated that. That and now Tito might be signing a deal....
I mean with no big name to promote they almost HAVE to sign him to have someone to make the new Poster Boy....
Also whats with now calling Seth Rocky? Dude Rocky beat Apollo who was a Champ.

I'd love to know that the hell the athletic commissions think of this - I believe EliteXC crossed the line with this shit and somebody needs to be hung (perhaps a Shaw?) for this. It's shit like this that will stop the sport from growing and gaining more mainstream acceptance. Right now I don't trust anything that happens at an EliteXC event, and I can't be alone.
And of course, let's not get into that bullshit standup from side control in the Arlovski/Nelson match.

I am hoping that Dana White gets this guy. I could see him putting him in there with other Karate guy who is "elusive" whats his name... Anyway that would be a pretty cool fight and maybe it would be finished. Then Dana could laugh all the way to the bank when he sent Seth home and he would be worth nothing. Not that I am a UFC nuthugger but I cant stand EXC. I was excited for Affliction but after they signed with $kala I was heartbroken. Maybe another promotion will come along that can actually compete. I have made my case for an AFC NFC type MMA deal with another promotion and UFC with a year end "super bowl" championship set of matches with all of the weight classes respectivley.

Mayhem420, I think in PRIDE the deal was: 'you get X amount of money for fighting Sakuraba and beating him; you get X + Y amount of money if you fight Sakuraba and lose' - a 'losing bonus', if you will. This is a little bit different - more of a 'stand-up fight' bonus.

I actually like Kimbo, in the sense that he got a ridiculous opportunity and made the right moves to get paid for it. As a serious MMA fighter he was a joke but I can respect that he made the most of a megabucks opportunity. For a youtube street fighter he actually had a head on his shoulders for success, even if he probably won't ever have the talent im sure his promoters somehow thought he could.

Shame. I knew Kimbo was being over rated by elite XC as "the #1 striker in the heavyweight division" but I kind of like the guy in spite of that (and some of the newer "fans" of MMA).
I'm mostly impressed that Seth got a win bonus. Was it in his contract or did they not actually consider that Golden Boy could loose?
