Silva Denies Disrespecting Cote

After a bizarre UFC 90 main event that saw middleweight champ Anderson Silva try to help Patrick Cote off the ground mid-fight, circle the cage with his arms down, and whip his hands around in a kung fu-esque display, there were many fans who thought Silva was, oh, I don't know, not taking Cote seriously? But despite our attempts to guess his motivation, Silva says his only concern was winning the fight. As he told Sherdog:

"There are many people saying I was disrespecting Cote, but this is absolutely not true. My game plan since the beginning was fight five rounds, inducing him to commit mistakes and capitalize on that during the first three rounds and look for the knockout during the fourth and fifth rounds. It was working, and the biggest proof of that is that I almost didn’t waste any blows. I connected with a couple of good punches and knees, but unfortunately he got hurt and the fight was over. This is not my fault."

Taking Silva at his word, maybe he's only guilty of showing Cote far more respect than fans thought the challenger deserved, which is sort of ironic in light of their subsequent criticisms. Still, it wasn't the kind of fight that people paid to see. And Silva's striking maybe wasn't as effective as he thought it was; by Compustrike's count, he only landed 39% of his arm strikes — decent, but well below his average.

In a related story, Fighters Only is passing along the rumor that Silva could meet Chuck Liddell in a headlining bout at the UFC's February 21st card, which will be held in London. When asked about the rumor, Silva told Sherdog "Thank you for the information, I didn’t know about that. Let’s see what [Dana White] will say."

Shit, is Dana mad at Chuck or something?

If Anderson Silva is retiring next year like he says he is, then I hope this Silva-Liddell fight rumor is true! Not only would this be the fight of the century but it will answer a lot of what if's. Dana should take advantage of Silva's remaining fights on his contract and set up crazy fights with worthy opponents. I read Silva won't fight fellow Brazilian contenders but make him fight The Axe Murderer, Lyoto or at least Thiago Silva! I would love to know if he truly is the best in the world. Plus, if Liddell wins this fight he could somehow redeem his already declining career and ride off into the sunset with the biggest win of his career. GO CHUCK!

LOL @ 'Tra Telligman's Pec' screen name and comment. Good one!

Tra Telligman's Pec - Sweet name man.

I'd love to see A. Silva Vs. Liddell. Excellent striker Vs striker match-up. Yeah Liddell has had some recent set backs but no matter who he gets in the cage with it's gonna be an exciting fight.

Suggesting that Silva's dancing around and kungfu moves were disrespectful is silly. Anderson Silva was taking part in a dying tradition in professional sports - gamesmanship. Would you say the New Zealand All Blacks rugby haka is poor sportsmanship or disrespectful too?

told ya :D......guys its a gameplan to make cote angry and start coming forward and it started to work but cote's crap knee poped.....i bet if he would have got the ko in the end no body would talk about him not respecting cote...SILVA FTW still the best p4p fighter!

Doesn't it make sense? If the guy's he's fighting has a puncher's chance...why increase his odds by just standing and exchanging with him? Silva fought that fight to win it...and he did...and he would have barring that knee injury anyways.

I like watching exciting fights, but people praising Bisping last week for using the exact same strategy against a heavy handed striker.

It's ok to expect more out of an Anderson Silva fight...but he employed a sound strategy to increase his chance at winning a fight. You can't blame him for that.

ignore the double post...i'm an asshole.

Not a HUGE Silva fan but there is no way in hell Chuck could pull that off. Did you not just see Spida dance for 3 rounds waiting for Cote to slip up(not literally) he would just sit back and wait for Chuck to drop that hand again and lights out!! Chucks done it all his career hes to old to change styles now. I'm pretty sure thats yet another card i would watch free online wouldnt pay for that one

Can we throw Chuck a can or two first? I don't think my heart can take seeing him get knocked out again.

Silva VS Chuck sounds like a boring fight between two counter strikers waking in circles waiting on the first punch.

I just wish Silva vs Liddell happened two years ago.

So now Dana's strategy is to say "Screw who deserves a title shot, let's just throw the kitchen sink at Silva".

I feel sorry for a lot of the better fighters in the UFC. Their shot at a title belt comes on the whims of the UFC. I like Chuck, but right now, he doesn't deserve a shot at the belt.

Anderson Silva fights like a girl, you'll never see Fedor have an equally unimpressive fight.

Silva vs Liddell would be the worst match making ever unless they were both retiring after the fight. If Silva wins, he's retiring soon anyway and Liddell's now coming off back to back losses and 4 of his last 5. His stock is absolutely ruined, and now Silva is still retiring soon so you have a guy no longer fighting and another guy with nowhere to go as far as worth. Then, if Liddell wins, you have a 38 year old beating your claim to the best P4P fighter even though Liddell can no longer hang with the best in the 205s.

I think it's a lose lose situation for the UFC unless both are retiring after the fight.

"and right after I’m going to spend some time in Thailand sharpening my muay Thai.”

No, no, no Ocho Cinco! This is what a river dance is supposed to look like!

This is getting kind of dumb. The concept of the "fight that fans wanted to see" is a ludicrous and potentially dangerous one. The only real way to make sure that fans see the fight that they want to see would be to some how affect the way fighters fight... hmmm.....

Lets please let the fighters do their job.

Also, I really feel sorry for some of the fans of this sport. Striking is clearly evolving past the point at which they find it entertaining. More fighters (arguably all the better fighters) are adding footwork and complex defensive head movement; some people see this as dancing or running away. A solution for you guys is to stick to some of the other fight orgs with less experienced fighters on contract.

And if Silva knocks Chuck out, then I'm having Chuck fight GSP. If that doesn't work out, then he's fighting Penn. I may even bring Faber to the UFC and have him fight Chuck.

No matter what, I am GETTING a belt for Chuck. Love you, man. XOXOXO

"Still, it wasn’t the kind of fight that people paid to see."

Zuffa should incentivize the fighters to follow fan-based fight strategies.

It's win-win: the fans get their money's worth and Zuffa makes bank. Plus, the armchair warriors don't have to spend valuable energy second-guessing fighting styles.

Hey! I prefer to be refered to as a "Keyboard Warrior." Get it right.

The fight that so-called "fans" want to see is at the local auditorium. It's called Toughman. Anyone who has ever seen Silva fight before knew he wasn't there to mess around. Cote was the challenger, he needed to go after the belt but he decided to play it safe and hopefully lose by points after 5 rounds.

@Ruckus- Totally agree with you. The fighters are getting so good that the fights aren't just 1st round knockouts, and I love the hell out of it. I just hope that fans evolve with the sport and stop booing at events.

Let's look at all of Silva's respectable wins since his loss to Ryo.

1) Jorge Rivera - TKO Rnd 2
2) Tony Frykland - KO Rnd 1
3) Chris Leben - KO Rnd 1
4) Rich Franklin - TKO Rnd 1
5) Travis Lutter - Submission Rnd 2
6) Nate Marquart - TKO Rnd 1
7) Rich Franklin TKO Rnd 2
8) Dan Henderson - RNC Rnd 2
9) James Irvin - KO Rnd 1

And his "gameplan" was to take Cote deep into "Rnd 5"? Okay.

You people are all rubes that can't understand MMA on the level that I do. I have been watching it forever. Knockouts and submissions are only cool if they come in the last round. And even then, they are not that cool.
I feel sorry for you people who all want to see exciting fights. That's how I used to be like 10 years ago, but then I EVOLVED. I am on another level entirely than you all. The future of the sport is clearly unanimous decisions where the winner landed more jabs and displayed technical footwork. I have trained in MMA for a long time. You haven't heard of me because I suck and have no shot at being a professional fighter, but this means that my understanding is so much better than yours. I am an MMA Buddha.

@ I have been an MMA fan forever...

I'm speachless.

Anderson is going to fuck Chuck up worse than Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris fucked Colmbine High School.

Too soon?

lol...
no need to get defensive... all I'm saying is... if you dont want to watch fighters dancing around each other, or being defensive, or using long term game plans... watch some of the lower tiered fighting orgs. there is nothing wrong with that.

its simply a fact, you will see more of the fights that you want to see.

Jugger: your analogies are false. Bringing up the Leben fight and saying because Anderson knocked out Leben in the first round he wouldn't use a five round strategy against Cote is just silly really. Same with Franklin and Henderson and Lutter.

"I am an MMA Buddha."<----No, you are a pompous jackass. Just because you talk and shit out of the same hole doesn't mean you're nearly as special as you think you are. If you suck but know so much, why aren't you commentating somewhere...you know, other than on Cagepotato where you display your staggering capacity to be an egotistical prick? Your post didn't say shit aside from implying you might think "Rear Naked Poke" is an actual submission. Jackass.

Of course he wasn't being disrespectful, did you hear how he asked the crowd not to boo Cote after the fight? Or how he offered his hand to him when he was down? Silva is a gentleman fighter in nearly all respects everytime I've seen him fight. He showboats, yes, but it's very entertaining to watch. Almost like rhythmic dancing. Also, he has spent plenty of first rounds (and sometimes 2nd rounds) feeling out his opponents. His opponents sometimes get too frisky and get KO'd in the first round but Cote was playing it fairly safe as well that fight. As a fan of Silva's since BEFORE he started UFC, what I saw was nothing different from many of his previous fights.

The fans and news outlets blow this fight up to be something fast and explosive, not Silva. It was CP here saying things like, "Get ready for a 55 second fight.." and such. How about stop building up fights to be something they may not be so then fans aren't so disappointed?

People bitch about anything.. :45 knockout in the main event? Too short.. I want my money back. Fighters being technical and learning their opponents for 2 out of 5 rounds? Too long, can't watch, I want my money back. Seriously.. Do you really expect a swing fest or grappling situation between Cote and Silva for straight 5 rounds?? Silva could have KILLED Cote int he first but wanted people to actually enjoy a show. But no.. Just bitching and complaining.. Take that shit back to the WWE where it belongs.

ruckus,

Alright.

I will be the one to honestly say, "He's beat guys who hit just as hard, have just as good chins, better jits, better mua thai striking, better wrestling, better clinch/dirty boxing, more experience, better conditioning, and all around phenomenally better skill sets in 2 rounds or less. If he can finish them, he could've gotten serious, stopped sparring around and dedicated himself to giving Cote a real fight."

There is nothing is Cote's skill set to suggest that Anderson's gameplan was nothing more than a ploy to "put on a show" at Cote's expense.

At least I have the balls to admit it when I act like a dick to other fighters

No, I am not mad at Chuck you fucking morons. I cant believe I am even taking the time to reply to such bullshit on some fucking pathetic website like this.

Chuck needs a win - a devastating win - to get him back where he was. There is no sense setting up a fight that will bring him back into the spotlight. A win over Silva would bring back the old Chuck. They are both great fighters, and I am not sure the fight will happen - But I will tell you this, it will be fucking amazing and you internet shit talkers will buy the PPV, no doubt.

I LOVE THIS WEBSITE!!!!!

I agree

@I have been an MMA fan forever Says

This is some funny shit -- you are a fuckin retard

@ Jugger, thank you! I agree with you 100%. Silva clearly said himself that his whole game plan was to take it to the 5th round. THAT was his game plan, get it to the 5th. And how was he to accomplish that? By avoiding engaging Cote. That, my pee brained internet noob friends is the definition of disrespect. Silva did NOT respect Cote enough to give him the fight Cote came for. Instead Silva spent as much time as possible doing anything BUT fighting. Oh, and since when did wiggling your fingers at your opponent and walking circles around the octagon become a "defensive strategy"? If that is so acceptable what would happen if everyone did that? What would happen if Cote did that? If Silva was serious about trying to get Cote to rush him why not just give him the bird or wave him on (bring it!) like most others do?

I can guarantee you Silva won't pull that shit again, if he does then it will prove that I'm wrong and that really is his new "strategy".

@ I have been an MMA fan forever...LMFAO!! Dude, that's funny. Love the sarcasm. =)

@ Dana White.....also hilarious. Impersonation SPOT on!!!

Damn, Hate when I post as "anonymous".
