Matt Hughes: Yale Chubb Fellow, Political Pundit

(Swaying the important ground-and-pound voter block.)
Former UFC champ Matt Hughes received the prestigious Yale Chubb Fellow this week, which he described as, "just an award for being who you are and standing up for what you believe is right." That's one way of putting it, though it wouldn't explain why Queen Latifah has yet to receive the award.
A slightly different description comes from Time magazine -- "the prestigious fellowship was endowed by Insurance Executive Hendon Chubb ('95) to encourage student interest in public affairs" -- but then that doesn't explain why Hughes got it. Other recipients include Harry Truman, Jesse Jackson, Maya Angelou, and Adlai Stevenson. How Hughes fits in there, I have absolutely no clue.
Anyway, they brought him to Yale and gave him some money, which he then gave to the Rancho 3M Christian orphanage, so something good came out of it.
Hughes also discusses the presidential election in his recent blog entry. We already knew he was voting for John McCain, but here he takes some time to explain why, perhaps to sway those mythical undecided voters we keep hearing about. After the jump, the political endorsement that could turn the tide of the election.
I’ve been asked a lot about this election and I’ve decided to go ahead and answer. I vote this way for my kids just as much as myself. First I think experience is an important factor. McCain has plenty, with over 20 years of experience as a Senator. Senator Obama has been there for around 4 years, but you have to subtract a year because he’s spent that running for the Presidency. One thing I dislike about Obama is he’s never shown that he loves this country. Whether it’s not putting his hand over his heart when he says the Pledge of Allegiance, or his wife’s comment about this being the first time she’s been proud of her country (when her husband was nominated as the Democrat candidate).
This is also going to be a big election because this President could get to pick three Supreme Court justices. I’m pro-life, against gay marriages, pro-gun and I want to keep our borders tight and I am in support of the war. I would not withdraw right now, I think we are well on our way towards what we wanted to do over there. I was told that these are not things that should determine the Presidency. I totally disagree. With the President going to nominate maybe three justices, I think it is a huge factor in this election. Another thing, I want the President to be a good role model, Senator McCain always addresses Barack Obama as Mr. or Senator Obama [ed. note: really?]. Barack always addresses Mr. McCain as John McCain. I like the respect value that Mr. McCain always shows. I dislike that Barack seems to show no respect for Mr. McCain. Barack not putting his hand over his heart during the Pledge also falls under the respect factor.
If Obama’s tax plan is what I’ve heard it is, then if you make over $250,000 a year, he is going to take 65 cents for every dollar you make and redistribute that. I’m all for helping people who need help, what I dislike is the government giving money to people who just want to sit around and be lazy and would rather soak up taxpayers’ money instead of going out and getting a job. I think we have enough of that already and those people don’t need anymore help. I would rather choose for myself who my money goes to.
Of course, everybody knows that I’m a born-again Christian, I know the McCain/Palin ticket share my views a lot closer than Obama/Biden. I don’t know for sure whether McCain is a Christian or not, however I do know that he sacrificed years of his life defending our freedoms which include freedom of religion. So he has proven that he is willing to sacrifice of himself to protect our Constitutional rights.
I do agree with Biden when he said that, if Obama gets elected, then somebody will test him within 6 months. The whole world is looking at this election and all those countries out there that hate us and want to do harm to us are hoping that Obama gets elected.
I can look past the fact that McCain was against my sport. I’m not taking that personally, I’m doing what I think is best for my kids and my country.
So, I hope people go out and use their best judgement and not look at who they can relate to the most, but who is going to do the best job out there.

Oh my good he's a dumb douche! Oh, wait, he's always been - - my bad.
CJ Says:
Hughes is an idiot just like anyone else who votes for McCain. I can understand not voting for Obama, but then you better be voting for someone better than him, not an old moron and retarded hockey mom.
lilbigvince Says:
lol.... oh Matt. Your going to vote for a candidate for the the president of the United States because he puts his hand over his heart before he recites the Pledge of Allegiance? Wowsers!!!! I bet you agree with that chick on the view too.
Cap'n Says:
What cracks me up is all this talk about sealing up our borders, when Georgie Bush himself signed into effect a movement that will, by 2018 I believe, combine Canada, U.S., and Mexico into basically one nation, with open borders. The US and Candadian dollar, along with the Mexican Peso, will all be disposed of, in favor of the new currency, the Amero. It's called the Amercian Union (similar to the European Union) and it's the next step into eventually incorporating South America, then eventually the world. One goverment, one power, and it is absolute power.
So, yeah, let's all be idiots and throw money away sealing up our borders. And don't forget, George Bush, the genius that spouts this nonsense about securing our borders, is the President that signed this into effect, and kicked it all off.
BJ Penn Says:
Man, if Obama wins, and then Serra beats Hughes (both of which should happen) then November 08-April 09 will be the best 6 months ever.
Too Says:
MCcain shows more respect than Obama!? The guy spends more time trying to smear Obama than talking about his own policies.
What fucking rock is Hughes living under.
BJ Penn Says:
Well, assuming I beat GSP too...which might be harder than Obama and Serra winning put together, but if I do, I pledge, as your new welterweight and lightweight champion, to lick his blood off my gloves.
Snoop Says:
Defend the constitution? He voted YES for the Patriot act and wiretapping.
But thats for defeating terrorist and defending our freedom and constitution...right...
Cap'n Says:
Oh yeah, by the way, McCain can't fix this country, and Obama can't either. Whoever is elected Pres, I feel sorry for. We're fucked. I'm gonna go live in the woods for the next 10 or 15 years til all this shit blows over.
kissenger Says:
Matt has a right to an opinion, but all that "he hasn't proven he loves this country" talk is bullshit. And anyone who thinks the war in Iraq has been successful ought not to have their political opinions taken too seriously.
sean Says:
eveyone hates mccain, except the people who actually have a brain in their head and aren't completly maninulated by the media and cock sucking celebs. I'm glad to hear one person out there in the spotlight that is still real.
kissenger Says:
Cap'n, I presume you're talking about NAFTA. Clinton was the one who signed the NAFTA agreement, but Bush et al have been firmly in support of it, and have expanded the agreement in a number of ways. However, your depiction of it is misleading - it's primarily a free trade agreement. The comparison with the EU is wrong. They went much further with the EU than they have done with NAFTA.
Good Laugh Says:
Matt Hughes talking about politics is like if Bill Clinton was talking about MMA. Would anyone take him seriously?
It's just another opinion....and right away in the first paragraph he proves some ignorance. Anyone who did research on the hand over heart thing would discover that it WAS NOT THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE. It was the Star Spangled Banner, and only some people I know put their hands over their hearts for that.
I don't care who people vote for....but at least let it be on the issues.
Stick to fighting Matt....oh wait.....you are washed up and horrible now.
joe mama Says:
i cant believe i actually agree with Matt Hughes on something... lol
Obama = Fail Machine
toolverine Says:
Matt Hughes is using some retarded math too. Barack has been on the campaign trail for 2 years now, not one. It's cool to have an opinion, but at least base your ideas on some accurate facts and information.
ImVotingForObamaBecauseImBlack Says:
He'll never win another fight other than against Serra.
Me+urmom=U Says:
When he was a TUF coach we really got to see the douche bag side of him....this just confirms that he's retarded and a douche bag. Wow just re-reading my statement makes me feel sorry for retarded people.

Oh no Kissenger, Cap'n is in full conspiracy mode. Dude, I think you may have accidentally hit the "crazy lock" button on your keyboard. "Amero", good one man. What's next? I know, how about a big "WAKE UUUPP SHEEEEPLE!!!!"
Mat Hughes is hilarious. I love how he dissects Obama's Tax plan. "from what I've heard...". How about actually looking into the plan dude? And he is going to base his vote on an imaginary "respect factor" but doesn't even care enough about his kids to actually research the candidates, outside of the right wing blogosphere. Man, the right has done a good job of creating this mistrust of the scary "MSM" in their base. I mean they really don't/won't believe anything unless it comes from a Limbaugh approved source. Keep em stupid and the Hughes' of the world will continue to ignorantly giving them their vote.

1glove Says:
I guess Matt didn't watch the debates, I seem to recall McCain calling Barack "that one", no MR. or nothing.
Since Matt loves this war, why doesn't he enlist, go fight for a miserable piece of sand.
And since when have war loving Republicans ever been afraid of a challenge, didn't Bush say "Bring it on". Sure Barack might be challenged but I am not afraid of a fight.
Wow, a 65% tax bracket, where is this tool getting his info.
I don't know how much defending McCain did inside his cage.
Giant Says:
Anyone voting or considering voting for Obama should google berg v obama. Not sure if that berg is completely accurate but basically he is suing Obama and DNC claiming Obama is not a citizen of the US. Basically he wants Obama to produce a birth certificate and Obama refuses to. Check it out and make your mind up but don't vote blindly.

Fuck them both, but especially that donkey faced asshole obama and his shrieking bitch of a brood sow wife.

Wow, I'm very impressed by the some of the readers of this blog. In fact, so impressed that I've decided to waste my time to type up this comment to complement you guys. Being a big mma fan myself, I'm ecstatic to read of the progressive thoughts which have been promulgated here. Prior to today, I only though rednecks who love violence for no apparent reason went on these sites. Btw, what the hell is goin' on here. Matt Hughes is IGNORANT! How does he deserve a Yale fellowship? I'm 99.9% sure this is a prank someone has pulled on him. What do you guys think?

(I'm one of the people that instead of actually arguing something and expressing my opinion about the topic I'm just going to mess with the people who are actually trying to do that)
Posting on a forum about your political view is the equivelant of putting a bumper sticker on your car, a sign on your lawn, or standing in a crowded room shouting your opinion at the top of your lungs while covering your ears. Any time you give your opinion without someone else being able to discuss it with you in a real productive manner, you're wasting your time. Stop putting bumper stickers on your car, find someone who disagrees with you but knows more then you about whatever it is your pushing, and argue with them about it. Maybe then you'll actually get a different perspective and grow as a person.
Or just keep posting on forums like me and shout your opinion as loud as you can while covering your ears with your hands.
babcock Says:
For the record i think its kind of silly to be commenting about an election on the potato...but since we are, you will all see the epic fail obama is when he wins
Red Baron Says:
I think most of you are too dense to know you should be embarassed by your comments. So, I'm embarassed for you - as an MMA fan, I'm embarassed that morons like you represent such a great sport.
Perhaps I should cut you some slack; you've suffered too many kicks to the head maybe. If you mental minimalists want to vote for Obama, well, I guess it's still a free country for awhile...
Kensei Says:
Look, Hughes obviously has an opinion and the right to vote.
I hate how in this county if someone doesn't politically agree with you, they are considered a moron.
Politicians lie. Be it Obama or McCain that is voted in as the next President, there are already severe events in motion that were in motion before Bush 2, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan, etc.
Stop your whining and control what you can.
Hulk Hogan Says:
Hughes says don't just vote for who you can relate too. His whole article was him relating more to Mcain in all of his views. Give me a break. Theres a real shock that some born again dumb farm boy red neck is pro gun is voting for Mcain. I hope Serra gives u a beatdown.
Cap'n Says:
@Kissenger
No. Not NAFTA. The American Union. Go research it for yourself, and think for yourself, too, while your at it. Hell, Wiki it if you're too lazy. By the way, just because the media doesn't report on it and put it in your face, doesn't mean it's not happening. And it especially doesn't mean it's not going to affect you in a major way. "Et al" stop tryin to sound smart.
Cap'n Says:
@Babcock
Do you think it's silly for CagePotato to report about someone's political views?

I love born again Christians who are pro war, pro death penalty, and pro guns.
Because I can just see Jesus, you know, totally supporting the Iraq war, killing people in the name of justice, and being all about shooting some shit up with lots of guns.
Die in a hypocrite fire, you dumb, ignorant ogre.
Hulk Hogan Says:
Why is it silly? Its a slow day in mma, why not get the political views of Matt Hughes? Nobody likes the dude, everyone thinks he's a redneck idiot, its good conversation. There are 34 comments so far, probably end at 75,it's a no brainer.
sherman Says:
I actually agree with Hughes here. Obama will spread the wealth to idiots / lazy people who dont work. America has been built by hard work, and the dems will try to take that away.
Also, to you ignorants out there....McCain is fine with MMA now, he just (rightfully) thought it used to be too cruel. Had people like McCain not spoken out, MMA would not be anywhere near as big as it is today
Razzle469 Says:

Matt Hughes is using his website and blog to actually connect with fans and be honest and actually write about his life and try to share a bit of himself with his fans. Everybody who is condemning him for his opinion on his own website is a moron, even if you do not agree you should respect somebody's opinion, especially on his own site.
CP Says:
It looks like Hughes reads (and believes) those chain emails that my mom sends me. I'm guessing he formed all of his opinions on "from what I've heard." Seriously, a 65% tax bracket?!? They don't even take that much from lottery winnings. If Hughes watched even one of the debates, he would have heard that Obama plans to move the $250,000 and up bracket from 36% to 39%, just like it was under Clinton. Also, that extra 3% isn't being "given" to anybody. It's going to pay for the dumbass war, the dumbass debt, and the dumbass dept. of homeland security. Entitlements (social security, welfare, etc.) have been dwindling since the mid 90s because we can't afford them any more. If you have some time, check out our 2008 federal budget and look at our operating revenue and our expenditures. It might change the way you think about how our government works and how the president can affect spending.
Sarah Palin is the most frightening presidential prospect (let's face it, McCain's old and a former POW which, understandably, knocks the life expectancy down) in our lifetime and maybe ever.
TeeReks Says:

Nobama Says:
I love how people like to deride Sarah Palin for her so-called lack of experience when she'll be "a heartbeat away from the presidency", yet they smugly avoid talking about the fact that if Obama wins, his heartbeat WILL be that of the president and he has absolutely no experience running anything other than endless campaigns for the next position he aspires to. The magic word "change" makes specifics unnecessary. If things are going bad, some think that what is needed is blank-check "change." But history shows any number of countries in crises worse than ours, where "change" turned problems into catastrophes. The public has been told very little about what this man with the wonderful rhetoric has actually done. What we know is enough to make us wonder about what we don't know. Or it ought to. For the true believers — which includes many in the media — it is just a question of whether you like him or not. When one thinks of all the men who have put their lives on the line in battle to defend and preserve this country, it is especially painful to think that there are people living in the safety and comfort of civilian life who cannot be bothered to find out the facts about candidates before voting to put the fate of this nation, and of generations yet to come, in the hands of someone chosen because they like his words or style
PotatoHead Says:
The fact that Hughes makes "Joe the Plumber" seem like Albert Einstein is further proof that it doesn't take a mental giant to distinguish character and integrity from... well, an unproven, ultra-liberal, socialistic pig who thinks he's phuckin' Robin Hood... a limp-wristed, pro-abortion, homo-loving elitist who...ahhh, forget it...I'm getting myself all worked up and suicidal again.
B.O. for President! I don't give a crap.
Question: Royce (in his prime) vs. GSP... discuss?
Jay Smith Says:
Are there still white people that drop the "N" bomb?
Fuckin cowards..........
Nobama Says:
@potatohead - true post, except that Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave the money back to its rightful owners, whom it was stolen from in the first place. Very different from what we'll face in 09.
@Jay Smith -
there is, and will always be racism from idiots on both sides of the "color" spectrum. To forget that even for a second is to set yourself up for some serious disappointment.
Razzle469 Says:
Sarah Palin likes the "pro-america" parts of American ... I guess those are where Matt Hughes comes from.
@Nobama - that woman could'nt name a single supreme court decision outside of Roe vs. Wade. And that is shocking. The least she could have done is mentioned Board vs. Brown. I'm an independent and no fan boy of the Democractic party. But McCain seriously makes me wonder what the heck he was thinking by picking a VP like that. If there is no other woman in the Republican part with a smarter head on her shoulders than Palin then the conservatives are in real trouble. McCain isn't winning this election ... the republican party has made conservatism = dog poo.
B.O. for President! (until he fucks up).
Razzle469 Says:
McCain likes dog poo!
