I hate all these uninformed idiots throwing the words Socialist and Socialism around.. The bottom line is, Socialism only hurts you if you make wayyyyy too much money.. And even then it only hurts you a little bit.. But look at all the good that extra money can do for families who can't pay rent, who can't pay their mortgages, who can't hardly afford groceries for their families.. This is a great day in American History, we should all be so thankful for this opportunity that lies ahead of us. For the first time in a long time, I am hopeful about our future.. I can actually see things getting better. Obama has a chance (albeit a slim one) to become not only the first black president, but also one of the greatest presidents in US history. Obama is not a socialist. Do people even read his actual policies or does everyone just watch ad campaigns? socialism is government cotrolling everything including goods being produced. His idea to raise taxes on the more wealthy individuals and companies is just a progressive tax. Nothing new that this country has never had. 3 percent raise is far from socialism. Aside from that, theres a lot more to life then how much or how little you might get taxed. People are narrow minded. Obama ftw

I have to say I didn't like either candidate completely. There were probably better candidates out there but the media machine didn't pick them up. One thing on my mind as a military veteran is the current war on terrorism. You're not going to sit down and talk with a terrorist. They'll say whatever you want to get exactly what they want. You can not negotiate with them. We'll find out what Obama is made of real quick.

Yeah, dude, I would consider the UK a socialist country -- not so much for the health care and stable financial system, but for its nationalized or partially nationalized utilities, banking, rail and auto industries. That's what socialism is.

It is not, for the record, having a progressive income tax. And seriously, how many of you railing against Obama's socialism make more than $250,000 a year? You know what will eff up democracy? When huge segments of the population are persuaded to vote against their own interests by identity politics. I don't care what Obama is. If he makes my country and my life in it better over the next four years, he's the man for the job.

I don't think this was a win for Obama as much as it was a total revolt against Republican leadership. The Dems could've nominated Alfred E. Newman and he would've won simply because the American populace is fed up with Republicans.

Will Obama and the Democrats do any better? No, they are bumbling idiot politicians too. I imagine that in 4 or 8 years we'll be sick and tired of them too.

On the bright side I'm glad we finally have a black president. We're definitely ready for this. Maybe now we can stop with all this "white people hate the black man" stuff. Look, Obama is proof that America is the land of opportunity, no matter what your skin color is.

Wake up man... Universal health care should be a basic human right within all developed nations.

Reading what most of you are saying caused me to panic for a moment... Then I realized that most of you fit one or more of the following criteria:

You are under 25 years old
You live with your parents or 3 other room mates
You make less than $40,000 a year
You pay little or no taxes
Two years ago, and possibly today, you could not name the current Secretary of State
You own a Mac because... well, you don't really know, but you hear all of the cool people own them.

That made me feel a little better until I realized, holy shit, you guys are the ones who showed up to vote yesterday!

It's way to early to say that we are heading towards socialism, but I CAN tell you this. I have my own business, I make over $250,000 a year, and due to the policies of the democratic party, at least one of my employees will probably lose their job in 2009. I'll be sure to tell them to thank you.

Having said all of that, I truly hope that Obama has the best interests of this country at heart and wish him the best of luck in taking over during a very challenging time. I would not want the job!

Obama’s proposed income tax increases (which won’t even be put forward for a vote until after the country is out of the current recession – i.e. in a couple years) are in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 percent, and would only apply to additional income you earn over and above the $250,000 threshold. So if you make $300,000 a year, your taxes would go up a whopping one or to two thousand dollars (2-3% of the additional $50K). And if you’re like most Americans and have a ton of deductions for your mortgage interest, children, etc., your federal income taxes will barely go up at all. Phasing social security payroll taxes back in for dollars earned above the $250,000 threshold is another potential issue, but you’ll really only feel it if you’re making a lot more than $250,000. If the increase in payroll taxes saves the system and actually results in you being able to collect social security when you retire, you might even come out ahead. It’s not going to kill you.

As for me, I’m under 30, make over $250K, pay a TON of taxes (federal, state and NYC tax + no mortgage interest deduction or dependents) and own a PC. I’m not thrilled about the prospect of paying more in taxes, but the last eight years have been a f*cking disaster in every possible way. Iraq was a gigantic clusterf*ck, we’re running record deficits and our economy has been run into the ground. I think it would be really tough for Obama to do a worse job running the country and wish him the best of luck

I voted for Obama, but I was moved to tears when McCain gave his speech last night. When he mentioned Obamas' name people started booing, but when Obama gave his speech and mentioned McCains name, people started cheering. That to me, shows where and why the country is divided. Why are the McCain supporters, and some of you here so bitter and or mad at Obama??? Both men love this country, and the one that won the election deserves our respect, and support. Keep your tin foil hat on. My father was a weapons inspector and has spent at least six months a year in Iraq since this got started. There where no chemical and biological weapons.

Invading iraq damaged our credibility and earned us a ton of enemies around the world. It also emboldened Iran, which knows that the US doesn't have the resources to invade them as long as it's resources are committed to Iraq. In addition, we ran up huge amounts of debt. It was a bad move.
