When SPIKE TV announced that it had hired onetime backyard brawler-turned UFC fighter Kimbo Slice to host the first instalment of its The Ultimate Fighter recap show, which will air opposite FX’s new live incarnation of the show, it looked like they may have briefly gotten the upper hand in the battle against their ex partners at Zuffa.

Leave it to Dana White and Co. to one-up the competition by trying to fuck them worse than they’ve ever been fucked before.

Somehow (okay, it was probably dollar signs and decimal points) FX convinced the gold grill-wearing Ultimate Fighter alumnus to cut a promo for TUF Live, convincing viewers to watch the new series, — a somewhat odd request, considering it runs at the same time as Kimbo’s “The Ultimate Fighter Fridays” premiere. In his defense, he could have filmed the spot before SPIKE hired him, but you would think he would have mentioned it to them beforehand to avoid looking like a fool, you know, more than he did bobbing all over shadowboxing while doing the promo.

(Seriously, if you have any shred of humanity, you’ll “like” Roy’s Facebook page to help convince him to drop to light-heavyweight. Otherwise, be prepared for a lot more of this.)

After dispatching Roy Nelson in straight-sets during his triumphant Octagon return at UFC 143, Fabricio Werdum has his next opponent close to finalized, and once again, it’ll be against a white dude with a deceivingly husky physique. MMAFighting reports that Werdum is slated to be on the UFC’s next card in Brazil, against Mike Russow. Though the event hasn’t been officially announced yet, it is expected to take place on June 16th in Sao Paulo, and will likely be headlined by a pair of long-awaited rematches in Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort vs. Wanderlei Silva.

Carrying a 4-0 UFC record, and producer of one of the greatest comebacks in UFC history, Russow last competed on the UFC on FOX 2 card, taking a rather uninspiring unanimous decision win over John-Olav Einemo. Werdum represents a massive step up in competition for the full-time Chicago police officer, but then again, Russow always seems to find a way to win. His last defeat came five years ago, against Sergei Kharitonov at Pride 33.

Divorces can be so bitter, can’t they?

SPIKE is really rubbing in how much more they like their new wife’s kids than they do the ones they helped make. It must be hard for the UFC to  see them spending so much time with Bellator buying them ice cream and cotton candy, when they don’t even call them on their birthday or pay any child support.

They rubbed salt into the fresh wound this week when they announced their latest family outing: a new Bellator video game developed by their newly-formed SPIKE Games family.

Funny, they won’t even give their own kids their old home movies, yet they start a new company to help their stepkids prosper. That’s cold.

Kung-Fu Games, the group responsible for creating the somewhat underwhelming Supremacy MMA title, are helping with the project. They also worked on on the new Deadliest Warrior: Ancient Combat and Ugly Americans games released by 345 Games — the Viacom-owned collective made up of Spike Games and Comedy Central Games.

According to the release, the game, dubbed Bellator: Onslaught, should be out this summer.

I did something terrible this morning, Potato Nation. After waking up with blood on my hands and a splitting hangover beneath an underpass I did not recognize, I was forced to stumble across five miles of snow covered wasteland, wearing only one shoe mind you, to make it home. I fired up my computer to find a video of newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Ben Henderson competing in the 7th Arizona Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu International Open awaiting my viewership. In need of a pick me up, I watched it, figuring that there was no way in hell my boy “Smooth” would be submitted by this Daniel Grippaudo sumbitch, because, let’s be honest, Henderson CANNOT be submitted. We all know the first round anaconda loss to Rocky Johnson that soils his record was made up to prevent 155-pound grapplers from committing mass suicide. There is no “Rocky Johnson.” There never was.

Anyway, after watching the video that awaits you all after the jump, I proceeded to run to the nearest elementary school, steal the microphone from the principal, and inform those listening to the morning announcements that Santa was in fact a lie. Do I feel bad about it? Surely, but the point I was trying to make is simple: give up hope. The boundaries of life are disintegrating before our very eyes. Nothing is real anymore; Santa, your parents, Jesus, none of it. If it turns out that the following video is not, as I suspect, a complete fabrication, then I hold these truths to be self-evident.

Bellator’s sixth season kicks off tonight at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, featuring the featherweight championship bout between Joe Warren and Pat Curran, and the season 6 featherweight tournament quarterfinals — you can catch the action on MTV2 starting at 8 p.m./7 p.m. Central. But the season has already gotten off to a shaky start, as yesterday’s weigh-ins resulted in one embarrassing scale-failure, and a crime-related no-show.

Tournament participant Genair da Silva crushed the scales at 149 pounds for his bout against Alexandre “Popo” Bezerra. Silva was given two hours to cut down to the 146-pound limit, but was unable to make it happen, and Bellator replaced him on the spot with season 4 featherweight tournament semi-finalist Kenny Foster, who was slated to meet Bobby Reardanz on tonight’s preliminary card.

Sean McCorkle and Josh Shockley also initially missed weight, but nailed it on their second attempts; keep in mind that McCorkle will be fighting in the talent-rich 280-pound catchweight division.

But at least all those guys showed up, unlike some people we know. As CageWriter reports:

There are a lot of things about Pride Total Elimination 2003 that don’t make sense when viewed with modern MMA sensibilities. How to even comprehend a world where a skinny, haired-up, suit jacket-wearing Dana White could bet Pride bigwigs $250,000 that Chuck Liddell was going to win that company’s 2003 middleweight grand prix? Or comprehend that a bizarrely dangerous and clearly-enunciating Liddell showed up in the first round of said tournament and KTFOed an impossibly svelte Alistair Overeem? Or that Overeem had an old dude in a robe and shriners hat accompany him to the ring while carrying a big foam hammer? Or that on this night somebody got tapped out with a sleeve choke? Or that Wanderlei Silva fought Kazushi Sakuraba and it didn’t just make everybody feel sad and empty?

No sense at all.

What does still sort of make sense is this: After watching Liddell sleep Overeem, there was no way on God’s green Earth that Pride judges were going to let another UFC emissary walk out of Saitama Super Arena with a win*, so they conspired to pull off one of the greatest screwjobs in MMA history when they awarded Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira a unanimous decision over Ricco Rodriguez. The indisputable fact is, Ricco whipped Big Nog good that night, taking him down, brutalizing him, shaking off his feeble submission attempts and controlling pretty much the whole affair. At least, that’s how I remember it. Unfortunately, due to Zuffa’s ongoing war on Internet piracy it seems their bout will only be remembered by history and by the creepy old man who answers the queries you submit to the Sherdog Fight Finder.

Well it looks like one glowing reference Urijah Faber will have on his resume when he starts applying for acting gigs will be from Rosie O’Donnell, which could go a long way if they’re looking to cast a teenage Bam Bam for Flintstones III.

The former WEC champ appeared on Rosie’s show on the Oprah Winfrey Network recently and the actress gushed over him, telling Faber that he has a bright future in movies.

“I wouldn’t want you to [be fighting when you're in your 40s] either, honey, because you’re too charismatic and you’re too kind of… I think you’re going to have a career like ‘The Rock.’ I think you transfer over to showbiz and you could have a full career in movies with karate where you’re the superhero-like kind of guy.”

In 2010, Vinicius Kappke de Queiroz became one of the UFC’s most unfortunate busts of the year when the 6’7″ Chute Boxe product gassed early in his Octagon debut against Rob Broughton, succumbed to a rear-naked choke in the third round, then pissed hot for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol. “VKdQ” (as he’s known to lazy MMA bloggers such as myself) was immediately released by the promotion, and hasn’t competed in MMA since.

But it looks like Bellator is taking a chance on him for their Season 7 Heavyweight Tournament, which will start this fall. During an interview with Matt Nixon, Queiroz confirmed the news: “I’m recovering now one injury I had in my knee, and I just had surgery, and I’m gonna fight again in September. I just signed with Bellator, I’m gonna fight in the heavyweight grand prix in Bellator. I’m excited to come back to fight, that’s my job, and I’m excited to do it again.” As Queiroz explains, he left Chute Boxe to move to America, and now trains with Black House/Team Nogueira.

Mixed martial arts fans are perhaps the most ruthless group of people out there; a quick scroll down any one of our comments sections only confirms this. One minute, a certain fighter is praised as a ruthless, badass hombre cut from the same cloth as the greatest champions the sport has ever known, and the next, they’re being told to save themselves the embarrassment of another performance and just retire already. It’s a crazy sport.

But then there are those few and far between fighters that we choose to rally behind regardless of where they currently stand in the MMA ranking system. Sometimes it’s simply because they can make us laugh, and other times it’s their “go for broke” mentality that wins us over. Sure, they’ve dropped seven of their last eight, including one to a drunken bar patron who accidentally stumbled into the ring, but all of those fights were like totally awesome, bro, so who are we to complain when they are kept around while other, more talented fighters are let go?

Here are eight fighters we will continue to root for, no matter how quickly their performances make us silently wish otherwise.

#8 – Aaron Riley

(Even when Riley *doesn’t* lose a fight, he still loses the fight.)

Record in last five fights: 2-3

Aaron Riley’s nickname could very well be “TUF Fodder,” because the man has fought nothing but The Ultimate Fighter alums, and often winners, for the better part of his UFC career. And it’s a shame, because the dude always brings the fight to these whippersnappers, but simply hasn’t been able to put any of them away. Most recently, he had his jaw broken again by TUF 13 winner Tony Ferguson at UFC 135. Back at UFC 105, he was made into mince meat by TUF 9 winner Ross Pearson. Set to square off against, you guessed it, TUF 12 alum Cody McKenzie, at UFC on FUEL 3 in May, Riley may be looking at his final chance to prove he can hang with these young guns before he is demoted to the Strikeforce roster. Speaking of a certain Alaskan native…

After watching Tim Sylvia’s overwhelmingly unimpressive “berserker” workout today from his unlikely (read, hopeless) guerilla campaign to get back in the UFC, we were reminded of the fact that some guys (and girls), no matter how passionate they are about the sport of mixed martial arts, just aren’t cut out to be fighters. Before you shoot the messengers, Tim admits himself that he was never the best athlete or fighter, but in today’s climate, he may not even be able to be more than an undercard heavyweight in the UFC.

Whether it be physical limitations or a deficiency in the skill set department, unfortunately for even the most passionate fighters sometimes heart and size aren’t enough to carry a career.

Just ask Butterbean and Zuzulinho.

In honor of those stubborn buggers in the sport, we’ve compiled 10 videos of other people who likely won’t be inking a contract with a notable MMA organization any time soon.

After weeks of pleading, Twitter bombing, and viral videoing, all of which yielded no results, it appears that former UFC Heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia has run out of options. We’re not even going to question whether you were ready for this; we know you’re not. His back against the proverbial wall, Sylvia decided that the only way to prove that he was truly ready for another UFC run was to release the above video, in which he unleashes the collective power of Maine-iacs worldwide in just over two minutes. I simply cannot come up with the words to describe it, so instead will rely on those of MRuss, who, after witnessing those two minutes of pure, unadulterated athleticism, set to a haunting Evanescence melody, said the following:

My wife lifts more weight than Tim. He does girl push-ups for Christ’s sake. 

Like we said. Your move, Dana.

With today’s fighting landscape where we see teammates competing against one another like Gokan Saki fighting Golden Glory training partner Alistair Overeem in K-1 and Carlos Condit preparing to take on Team Jackson stablemate Georges St-Pierre, you’d think that brothers competing in a combat sambo match wouldn’t be a big deal.

Apparently Fedor Emelianenko disagrees.

The former PRIDE and WAMMA heavyweight champion competed in his beloved Russian mat sport last month and when he found himself paired with younger brother Aleksander in the heavyweight final, the fix was in.

Instead of squaring off, Alecks, who is a four-time Sambo champ, embraced Fedor, allowing himself to be thrown and submitted by his brother with an armbar, in what looked more like a demo than a bout.

The brief display made Bob Sapp look like a gamer.

(Let me guess: You’re not here to make friends?)

We haven’t heard much from former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Marloes Coenen since that whole Golden Glory debacle saw her get axed from the Zuffa banner along with John Olav Einemo and the Overeem brothers. And while Einemo and Alistair were quickly brought back to the promotion, Coenen opted to sign a three fight deal with North Carolina based BlackEye Promotions instead, a move that she might be kicking herself over in light of current circumstances.

In either case, it seems that the reason we have heard so little from Coenen since her fallout was not due to any legal issues or bitter resentment, but was rather more primitive in nature. (See what I did there? Triple entendre. Suck it.) Turns out, Marloes was cast alongside twelve of the Netherlands’ biggest celebrities, whoever the hell they are, as part of a Survivor type reality show called “De Schat van De Oranje” (The Treasure of Orange). According to some research that I most certainly did not do, the show dropped these hapless celebs out of a helicopter onto a remote island off the coast of Thailand, then pitted them against one another in a (death) race to find, you guessed it, hidden treasure. Being that it was shot in Thailand, the celebrities faced opposition in the form of crooked cops, gang fights, and transsexual prostitutes.

We’re not going to put our judgmental faces on, because honestly, on the scale of “Weird Things MMA Fighters Have Done For Money/Fame,” this is definitely closer to the Kimbo Slice: SpikeTV Host end of the spectrum than it is the Aaron Brink/Dick Delaware end, so we’re all for it. Get that bread, Marloes.

In terms of sheer mass, UFC 146 (May 26th, Las Vegas) is shaping up to be the biggest card of the year. Already headlined by the heavyweight title fight between Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem, and also featuring Big Country vs. Bigfoot and Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane Del Rosario, another pivotal large-man matchup has now been added to the event.

UFC president Dana White has confirmed that the rumored bout between former champions Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir has been verbally agreed to for UFC 146, and will officially be a #1 contender’s match in the heavyweight division. In other words, the winner of JDS vs. Overeem will know his next opponent that same night.

(“When I was a teenager and I was having problems in West Linn, my mom sent me to live with my Auntie and Uncle in Bel Air. I’ll never forget how bad the cab driver smelled that took me to their house.”)

It appears the Gangster from America is back to his old tricks copping material and claiming it as his own.

You might recall that Chael “borrowed” his post-fight UFC on Fox 2 speech from former pro wrestler “Superstar” Billy Graham. Now it seems, as pointed out by several of our astute readers, that the number one UFC middleweight contender has claimed artistic license on a bit made famous by Emilio Estevez in the 1988 movie Young Guns.

It looks like Mayor McCheese has granted Roy Nelson a temporary reprieve from his Facebook sponsored drop to light heavyweight, as it is being reported that the TUF 10 winner has been booked to square off against former EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC 146 in May.

Continuing the UFC’s ongoing trend of purging Strikeforce of any remaining talent, it was rumored a couple months ago that Silva would be facing Cain Velasquez for his UFC debut, which was tentatively set for April. Rumors quickly shifted to a possible Velasquez/Frank Mir matchup, and “Bigfoot” was all but forgotten about in the mix of things. After shocking the world by handing Fedor Emelianenko his first (T)KO loss since December of 2000 at last year’s Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva card, “Bigfoot” would find himself on the wrong end of a slightly less shocking KO loss to Daniel Cormier in the semifinals of Strikeforce’s long running heavyweight tournament in his last contest.

Sure, it would have been nice if Strikeforce did a simple Google search to see if Brandon Saling had any skeletons in his closet; even if they looked at one photo of him before last Saturday, they might have noticed that his tattoos were of the “history buff” variety. But now that the truth is out regarding Saling’s past — which includes a 2004 conviction for having sex with a 12-year-old — at least we can be sure that we’ll probably never see this walking-turd compete in sanctioned MMA competition again*.

According to an MMA Weekly report, the Ohio Athletic Commission has revoked Saling’s fight license after last weekend’s event in Columbus for failing to disclose his past criminal background on the licensing application he filled out in February for a previous fight under the NAAFS banner. In addition to being listed as a registered sex offender in the state of Ohio, Saling was also convicted on domestic violence charges stemming from an incident in 2008.

It came as a bit of a surprise to the MMA world when TUF 1 alum and former welterweight number one contender Josh Koscheck announced that he would be departing from long time training camp American Kickboxing Academy in the wake of his narrow split decision win over Mike Pierce at UFC 143. A member of the gym since 2006, Koscheck had widely credited the facility for the improved striking he displayed in his devastating knockout wins over Dustin Hazelett, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, and Frank Trigg. The tight unity between AKA members became a well known facet of the gym, so much so that training partners often refused to fight one another no matter what the repercussions, or benefits for that matter, would be as a result.

And though Koscheck still holds to the claim that he would rather retire than fight former training partner John Fitch, he has taken a 180 in terms of giving his former gym its due credit. If we didn’t know any better, it almost seems as if Koscheck is, dare we say, a little bitter about the whole thing. When asked about the situation by Ariel Helwani, and specifically his feelings towards AKA head trainer Javier Mendez, here’s what he had to say:

For the record, he was never my coach. He tagged along here and there, but I think I’m in a better place now…I think Bob Cook will always be the man over there…it’s good to be around real coaches that care and real coaches that put time in and real coaches that will put the effort to make your fighter the best, and I have that now. 

Of course [Javier] worked with me, but did I learn anything? Meh. It is what it is. I’m done with that chapter of my life and I prefer not to talk about it. I prefer to talk about Dethrone Base Camp in Fresno. That’s where it’s happening right now.

Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that a main event match-up between Bellator lightweight champ Michael Chandler and PRIDE and UFC vet Akihiro Gono will close out its planned Bellator 67  card  May 4  at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario Canada.

A crafty veteran, Gono (32-17-7) should provide a challenge for the undefeated newly crowned 155-pound BFC champ.

“I’m just excited to get back into the cage,” Chandler said of the planned bout. “I fought four times in 2011 and I’m ready to get back to work. Gono has beaten some of the best fighters in the sport and this should be a good test for me.”

Just a friendly reminder for you to set your PVR for 9:00 p.m. ET tonight so you don’t miss the acclaimed two-hour Bruce Lee documentary SPIKE TV is airing.

The film, “I Am Bruce Lee,” is a theatrical release currently playing in select theatres in Australia, the U.S. and Canada this month, and by all accounts it’s definitely worth watching, especially if you’re a fan of the late great martial artist and actor’s work.

Youtube Sensation/UFC vet/pornstar confidant Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will be looking to improve his professional boxing record to 4-0 come March 24th, when he welcomes former MMA fighter Mike Glenn to the boxing world at the O’Reilly Center in Springfield, Missouri in a card dubbed Fight Night Returns.

Since being ousted from the UFC following a second round TKO loss to Matt Mitrione at UFC 113 and subsequently calling it a day on his MMA career, Slice has scored three straight victories inside the boxing ring, the first two of which came via brutal one punch knockout inside the first round. It appeared as if the future Spike TV host was destined for WBA dominance, until he ran into personal fitness trainer and boxing newbee Charles Hackmann. Although Hackmann came into the bout on just a day’s notice, he managed to make it the distance with Kimbo and nearly finished him in the second round. The win, to say the least, was not impressive.

(Hint: Incorporate gigantic women whenever possible.)

Well, he must have called DW back. Whether you feel Frankie Edgar deserved it or not, it appears the former lightweight champion will be getting his rematch with Ben Henderson sometime this summer, as announced by UFC  President Dana White on his Twitter earlier this evening.

MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani caught up with UFC on Fox 3 headliner Nate Diaz today at the press conference today in New York for the New Jersey event and the lightweight contender revealed that he thinks his brother Nick’s days in the Octagon are over.

“Triathlon season is starting so he’s just training, getting in shape for that. [He's] concentrating on being in shape, being healthy, helping me out and coaching me for my fights. Right now, I don’t think [we'll ever see him back]. He’s just big on, like I said, just being healthy and staying in shape and not worrying about [fighting] and thinking about it. I think he’s retired. He hasn’t been into this whole fighting thing for some time, you know? Since everything that goes on with the funny wins and losses — for not just him — for me and for people on our team. I think he’s just relaxed right now and he’s pretty set on his retirement. I kind of agree with him, you know? It’s hard to say, especially when it’s somebody like my brother,” Nate explained.

A Florida-based MMA fighter and former Marine who did three tours in Iraq was arrested and charged with seven criminal counts Monday in Coral Springs Florida in relation to a road rage incident that allegedly occurred yesterday afternoon.

A Sun Sentinal report states that 31-year-old Fernando Rodrigues was taken into custody after allegedly chasing down a motorist after becoming incensed that the driver took too long to go through an intersection. Catching up to the vehicle, which had pulled over so the driver could call the police, Rodrigues is alleged to have pistol whipped and pointed his handgun at the two male occupants of the vehicle before beating and kicking them at gunpoint while they lay on the shoulder of the road. According to the official police report charges against Rodrigues, who runs an American Top Team affiliated gym (and is not the founder of the revered fight camp as incorrectly stated in both the Sun Sentinal and NBC Miami stories today) include armed burglary, assault and battery with a weapon, three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Our friends at StudioMMA broke the news minutes ago that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira sustained an injury training for his upcoming UFC on Fuel 2 bout with fast-rising light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson and that stepping in for Lil’ Nog will be fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva.

Silva, who is returning from a one-year suspension for submitting artificial urine to the California State Athletic Commission  in an attempt to mask steroid use ahead of his UFC 125 win over Brandon Vera, was originally slated to rematch “The Truth” at UFC on Fuel 3 on May 15 before a training injury forced his opponent out of the bout. Igor Pokrajac stepped up to replace Vera, but it looks like the UFC will now have to find a replacement for the Croation.

It’s Showtime announced today that it has signed a new deal with the new K-1 owners that will see both the lightweight and heavyweight tournaments continue as well as fighters contracted to the Dutch kickboxing organization participate on some of the previously Japanese-owned organization’s planned cards.

FEG sold the struggling promotion to Chinese businessman Michael Kim, who promptly attempted to distance it from the company’s spotted past by changing the name to K-1 Global (how original). Kim also atoned for the sins of his forefathers by agreeing to pay each of the It’s Showtime fighters previously owed money by FEG 50 percent of their outstanding pay as a signing bonus with his new promotion.
