Gray Maynard vs. Ross Pearson Booked for UFC Fight Night 47, With Abel Trujillo Injured

(BREAKING — Ross Pearson and Ovince St. Preux have just withdrawn from their fights due to terror-induced injuries. / Props: Gray’s Instagram)

Due to an undisclosed injury suffered in training, UFC lightweight Abel Trujillo has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled main card bout against Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night 47: Bader vs. St. Preux (August 16th; Bangor, ME). Stepping up to fight Pearson in Trujillo’s place is Gray Maynard, who was slated to face Fabricio Camoes on the same card. (Maynard and Camoes were originally booked to fight at UFC 176, before that event was canceled.)

Maynard badly needs a win here — or at least a halfway-decent performance. “The Bully” suffered back-to-back first-round TKO losses against TJ Grant and Nate Diaz last year, and has only won a single fight since 2011, an infamously dull split-decision victory over Clay Guida in June 2012.

Pearson is coming off his screwjob decision loss to Diego Sanchez in June of this year, which followed a no-contest against Melvin Guillard last October, when Guillard opened up a huge gash on Pearson’s forehead with an illegal knee. I’m sure Pearson would like nothing more than to defeat Maynard in a controversy-free ass-kicking. Should be a good one.

The bout order for UFC Fight Night 47 hasn’t been made official yet, but the list of matches is as follows…

[VIDEO] Daniel Cormier Slams “Bully” and “Liar” Jon Jones During ESPN Sportscenter Interview

Mere hours after their media day staredown erupted into an all out brawl, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier appeared on ESPN’s Sportscenter to issue the standard apologies/continue shit-talking each other, and boy oh boy did the champ change his tune. I mean, literally. For a guy who was nearly inciting a riot during the scuffle and taunting Cormier on Instagram in the moments afterward, Jones sounded as if he was on the verge of falling asleep while atoning on ESPN’s flagship program:

You know, first of all, I’d like to give an apology to the MGM Grand, and all the fans, and all the kids who saw that. Definitely not proud of what happened today. What happened was, we had a face-off, and in the UFC it’s very common to see two athletes get very close in their face-offs; our heads touch, our nose rubs together, it’s very intimate, very passionate moment for a lot of fighters. I’ve actually never had a fighter put his hands on me by squeezing my throat. I reacted in self defense by beating up Daniel.

As you might expect, Cormier was having none of Jones’ patented fakeness and plain creepy understanding of pre-fight faceoffs…

NSAC Attemps to Block Chael Sonnen From Competing at Metamoris 4, Threatens Him With Massive Fines

(Life was so much simpler then.)

Last month, the Nevada State Athletic Commission smacked Chael Sonnen with a two-year suspension after he tested positive for a pharmacy’s worth of unapproved substances, following two separate random drug tests back in May. As Sonnen and PED-apologist Ralek Gracie see it, that suspension shouldn’t stop the American Gangster from headlining a submission-grappling event in California this weekend. But according to the NSAC, it should stop him from competing, and they’re pretty upset about it.

Bleacher Report’s Jeremy Botter broke the news that the NSAC is attempting to prevent Sonnen from competing at Metamoris 4, scheduled for this Saturday, August 9th, in Los Angeles. As Botter wrote:

Multiple sources confirm NAC has threatened to fine Sonnen $250,000 per failed drug test violation if he competes at Metamoris. Sonnen has hired Vegas lawyer Ross Goodman to represent him in the case…Sonnen camp’s contention is that grappling is not fighting and suspension shouldn’t cover it.”

Knockout of the Day: Romanian Kickboxer Alex Filip Hits a “Rolling Thunder” at the SuperKombat WGP

(High-class Romanian escorts are no empressed wid your performance.)

Good morning, Nation. How was your weekend? I spent mine cleaning teeth out of a urinal trough at the particularly seedy bar at which I am also employed as a custodial engineer. What can I say? Writing base-level insults about MMA fighters don’t pay what it used to, that’s for sure.

Uneventful and depressing as my weekend may have been, it certainly couldn’t have gone worse than that of German kickboxer Roman Palamar, who wound up on the wrong end of a highlight reel knockout at the Superkombat World Grand Prix in Romania on Saturday. (The sound you just heard was me absolutely nailing that transition, BTW.)

Paired up against Romanian Alex Filip, who sported a professional record of just 1-0, the 18-2 Palamar was heavily favored to come away with the win and was more than holding his own against his older opponent through the first round. That was, until Filip deciding to channel his inner Peter Graham and unleash a Rolling Thunder kick that landed flush on Palamar’s jaw and put him down and out.

Check out a video and gif of the absolutely stunning KO after the jump.

Correction: Jon Jones Suffered Cut Above *Right* Eye — But He Didn’t Want You to Know That

(via Instagram.com/jonnybones)

By now, you’ve probably seen the video of UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones getting his left eyebrow stitched up last week, following an apparent training injury. With his UFC 178 title defense against Daniel Cormier just two months away, the release of the clip was an interesting choice, as most fighters tend not to publicly broadcast their physical vulnerabilities before fights.

“I’m gonna take u down and grind my elbow into that cut you got today,” Cormier wrote on Thursday in response. “Put a bullseye on that thing. Some things should remain private.”

So what if I told you that the video was intentionally manipulated, in an attempt to trick Cormier into targeting the wrong eye? This morning, Pedro Ivo Jr. from Portal do Vale Tudo dropped some knowledge on us via email:

Jon Jones manipulated his instagram video about the cut he suffered. You can see clearly that in one moment they are stitching the RIGHT eyebrow…and not the left. Why did he do this? It’s the same eyebrow that Gustafsson opened at [their] fight. He is trying to hide that he opened the same side.. so DC wont notice this!

And yeah, if you watch the video closely, you’ll see that the certificates on the wall behind him are displayed in reverse. Oh snap. I don’t appreciate your ruse, Jon.

Watch Art Jimmerson Knock A Fighter Through the Ropes (and Make a Guy Puke)

Art Jimmerson is arguably the most derided fighter in the history of MMA. This is understandable. The dude went into UFC 1 thinking he was going to collect some easy money by knocking out strip mall McDojo masters.

As we know, the reality was that Jimmerson was out of his depth in a no holds barred competition. And, of course, he fought Royce Gracie wearing only one glove, instantly guaranteeing himself a place in MMA’s hall of shame.

UFC co-creator Campbell McClaren recently dished on the one-glove issue on Darce Side Radio. It turns out “Big” John McCarthy had an exchange with Jimmerson before the fight. He explained what Royce Gracie would do to Jimmerson, as well as the horrifying fact that the referee wouldn’t separate the fighters in the case of a clinch. This was a fight, not a boxing match.

MMA Mania summed up McClaren’s story:

TMZ Releases Photos of Joe Riggs’ Gunshot Wound. They’re Extremely Graphic

(via TMZ)

Joe Riggs shot himself in the leg last week? In case you forgot, Riggs was cleaning his gun when it discharged. The gunshot wounded his hand and leg.

TMZ just released pictures of Riggs’ wounded leg, and they’re brutal. We’d make a “that’s even worse than Marvin Eastman’s cut!” joke but this is a pretty serious matter. CagePotato doesn’t like to joke and ball-bust about life threatening things.

A video is embedded above which shows the images and provides footage of Riggs discussing the injury. If you don’t feel like watching that, here are the photos (via TMZ). Be warned, they are EXTREMELY graphic. Don’t look at them if you’re squeamish.
