SportsPotato: Ben Flower Scores Savage KO Via Punches During Rugby League Match, Is Ejected

I don’t pretend to understand the rules of rugby league, but I do know this — you are generally not allowed to punch an unconscious opponent in the face. This weekend at the 2014 Super League Grand Final, a hulking Wigan Warriors prop named Ben Flower got his dumb ass ejected in the second minute of the game when he forgot which sport he was playing, knocked out Lance Hohaia of St Helens RLFC with a straight right, then landed another devastating blow from above because Steve Mazzagatti hadn’t jumped in yet. (Skip to 0:43 for the replay.) It’s honestly one of the most disgusting fouls I’ve ever seen in a non-combat-sport, and fortunately, Flower’s team lost the game 14-6.

Falling Tree Head Kick Knockout of the Day: Female Fighter Gets Starched at ‘Say Uncle Fight Night 2′

(Props: DEVILFISTS MMA via MiddleEasy)

Saturday night in Sheffield, England, an MMA fighter named Veronica Macedo scored one of the best head-kick knockouts of the year when she put Chrissy Audin into a deep sleep at an event called “Say Uncle Fight Night 2.” (God bless regional MMA.) Clearly, Audin was expecting a body kick, as her hands were nowhere near her face when she ate Macedo’s foot.

Audin’s falling-tree descent was swift and brutal, her head bouncing off the mat in grotesque/awesome fashion. Macedo just wanders around afterwards like it’s no big deal, and someone near the camera shouts “FACKING ‘ELL!!” Audin is still on the mat when the video ends, but I’m just going to assume she was alright, because otherwise how could I live with myself, watching videos like this every day?

Update: A higher-quality video is after the jump. My God, that sound.

Here’s What a UFC Magic the Gathering Set Looks Like

You didn’t hear about Dana White’s latest announcement: An MMA-related Magic the Gathering set?

Well, there’s a reason you didn’t hear about it: It didn’t happen. Thankfully, one of our favorite past times is figuring out what products should needlessly be merged with our MMA obsession. A few days ago, we arrived at Magic the Gathering (MTG for short). We played the addictive card game back in high school. We wondered what a set of MTG that spans the entire MMA world might look like. The below cards–featuring the likes of Dana White, Conor McGregor, Greg Jackson, as well as several “MMA memes”–are the result of our mental meandering.

A few notes: We haven’t played Magic in about 10 years so some of the gameplay semantics might not be totally accurate. Also, some of the abilities are for the purposes of chiding MMA as only irreverent CagePotato can. All real photos in the cards come from Getty Images, save for the photo of “Minowaman” Ikuhisa Minowa, which comes from Sherdog. Another card’s image comes from a YouTube screen capture (you’ll know which one).

With that, here are the cards. We hope you enjoy them:

By Alex Giardini

WSOF 14: “Shields vs. Ford” came and went last night from Edmonton’s Expo Centre in Alberta, Canada, with the majority of the focus on a former UFC and Strikeforce combatant looking to regain his flair.

In a card billed as USA vs. Canada (borrowed from pro wrestling, of course), a welterweight title shot was on the line, as Jake Shields took on Ryan Ford in the main event. The co-main event featured the inaugural heavyweight championship bout between Derrick Mehmen and Smealinho Rama, and also on the main card, Canadian MMA veteran Chris Horodecki battled Luis Huete and Jared Hamman took on Luke Harris.

Bellator 128 Results and GIF Highlights: Warren Edges Dantas, Page Defeats Burrell

Another Friday night, another Bellator card–Bellator 128, to be specific.

This card wasn’t the best Bellator has put on, but it was good enough. Alexander Sarnavskiy took on pornographic actor Dakota Cochrane. Bubba McDaniel fought Emiliano Sordi. In the co-main event, highly touted prospect Michael Page met Nah Shon Burrell. Eduardo Dantas defended his Bellator bantamweight title against Joe Warren in the main event.

Video: Mayhem Miller Is Detained By SWAT Units Following Hours-Long Standoff

Well yesterday took a turn for the weird, didn’t it? Here I was just sitting in my office, counting down the minutes until I could punch out early without the fear of BG’s almighty hand (he’s in NYC doing casting couch sessions for aspiring writers or some shit), when suddenly, everyone’s all like, “Hey Jared, Mayhem Miller’s live-tweeting his standoff with LA S.W.A.T right now. Maybe get on that.”

I tried to brush it off at first, thinking Miller is just going on one of his crazypants bananas rants again, but upon further, journalistical research (checking my Twitter feed), I find out that, yes, Mayhem is actually doing that thing people said he was. Crazy.

Thankfully, Miller surrendered a few hours after barricading himself inside his Mission Viejo home, bringing a bizarre ending to the latest in what has been a series of bizarre incidents involving Mayhem Miller. And today, some lovely, helicopter-shot footage of Miller being apprehended has been released for us all to watch before putting our heads in our hands and asking where it all went wrong.

Though absent of the crisis negotiation team and robotic bomb squad that were apparently present at the scene, the video captures roughly a dozen SWAT members exiting Mayhem’s home with a shirtless and pink-mohawked Miller in handcuffs. In the front there is Gator Dog, calmly patrolling the poolside and wondering why the men in masks are taking away his owner for the 1000th time. This whole thing makes me sad.

After the jump: A few photos/details of the arrest and the most insultingly generalized reaction piece yet.

Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington Official For UFC 181 on December 6th

(Holm’s most recent performance — a 5th round starching of Julianna Werner at Legacy FC 30)

At long last, Holly Holm‘s UFC debut has been made official, with an opponent and everything! According to a press release sent out by the UFC last night, Holm will in fact be making her promotional debut at UFC 181 on December 6th. As previously reported, it appears that Holm’s potential bout with Russian scrapper Milana Dudieva has been passed over in favor of a bout with TUF 18 semifinalist Raquel Pennington.

Currently 1-1 in the UFC and 4-4 overall, Pennington’s only appearances on the big stage have resulted in an incredibly lackluster decision victory over Roxanne Modafferi at the TUF 18 Finale and a split decision loss to Jessica Andrade at UFC 171. Holm, on the other hand, is 7-0 as a professional with 6 stoppage victories by way of TKO. Expect the odds in this one to be Silva vs. Bonnar-esque.

Said Holm after signing with the UFC:

When I first started doing MMA, people asked me what my goal was in this, and my goal is to be the first female that has titles in both MMA and boxing because nobody’s done that. And it’s totally doable, and that’s my plan.

How do you see this one ending, Potato Nation? A body shot KO victory for Holm, or a head kick KO victory for Holm?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller Is Live-Tweeting His Arrest Right Now [UPDATED]

(We swear to God, Mayhem, if you so much as harm ONE LITTLE HAIR ON THAT DACHSHUND’s HEAD.)

We probably should have known that something was brewing on the horizon when Mayhem Miller, after a much-needed vacation from Crazytown (the place, not the band), threw an unprompted barb at Dana White on Twitter yesterday. “Rememba that diry girl of mine that gave you the clap and caused you marital probrems @danawhite? I hit it that weekend but wore a rubba haa” wrote Miller, an accusation that was brushed off by most as another blatant attempt by the former fighter to get his name back in the headlines.

Of course, things began to take a disturbing turn less than an hour ago, when Miller apparently began live-tweeting his own arrest while barricaded inside his Mission Viejo home. From his verified Twitter account:

Additionally, the Orange County Sherrif’s department just tweeted a photo of the scene outside of Miller’s house, and it does not look pretty…

6 Post-Fight Celebrations Rory MacDonald Should Consider [w/GIFS]

(Woah. He almost looked human there for a second.)

We know exactly two things about Rory MacDonald right now: He will “absolutely, positively, without a doubt” face the winner of Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler II for the welterweight title (and in Canada, no less!), and he is something of a novice when it comes to the art of the post-fight celebration.

The post-fight celebration is a crucial and oft overlooked aspect of mixed martial arts competition, serving as a triumphant final display of a given fighter’s dominance. As a male peacock displays its feathers to attract a mate, an MMA celebration likewise let’s every member of the opposite sex know that you are the Alpha Male, the pack leader, the mate with the most irresistible “plumage.”

Should Rory manage to defeat the winner of Hendricks vs. Lawler in his own backyard, he will need to bring a lot more to the table than “The Spastic Ape” seen above if he hopes to attract a premo Canadian mistress. With that in mind, here are a few celebrations he should consider working on…

The Bernie

A classic go-to at any wedding, birthday, or gala event, the Bernie would allow Rory to shed the notion that he is a stiff, soulless combination of gears and wires contained within a human skinsuit. He could even combine the Bernie with his pre-fight stare into the abyss for a truly haunting experience.
