UFC 180 Results: Fabricio Werdum TKO’s Mark Hunt for Interim Heavyweight Title

(“Great news, everybody! Fabricio and I worked out our differences backstage, and we’ve decided not to fight. So…yeah. Take care and enjoy the fajitas.” / Photo via Getty)

The UFC is in Mexico City for the first time ever tonight, as Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt slug it out for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 180. Plus: TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum looks for his fifth straight victory against Jake Ellenberger (who is trying to avoid his third-straight defeat), and top featherweight contenders Ricardo Lamas and Dennis Bermudez will temporarily take a break from dissing Conor McGregor in order to fight each other. So let’s put all the injuries and social unrest out of our minds and just try to have a good time, okay?

Our goi Alex Giardini will be hustling out round-by-round UFC 180 results from the PPV main card starting at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. See the Ruptured Cauliflower Ear at UFC 180 That Was More Disgusting Than James Thompson’s

History was made at UFC 180, and it wasn’t even on the main card! A preliminary bout between Jessica Eye and Leslie Smith produced one of the grossest visuals in MMA recently.

Eye battered Smith throughout the first round. One of Eye’s punches glanced Smith’s ear, rupturing it in the first round. In the second round, Eye kept smashing the ear, turning it into a gory mess worse than that of James Thompson when he fought Kimbo Slice.

Street Fight of the Day: Russian* Dude Knocks Two Fools Cold With Just Two Punches

(Props: MiddleEasy)

As is often the case with Russian alley fights, context and backstory are completely irrelevant here. But basically, this video features a guy in a hooded jacket demolishing two consecutive foes with two perfect punches. The first victim gets falling tree’d with a left hook. The second one eats an off-balance haymaker and drops to the ground, temporarily dead.

Watch that second knockout again and you will notice two things. 1) The dude got knocked out while trying to throw a leg kick. In a street fight. So, so embarrassing. 2) The second knockout victim also had a cigarette in his mouth at the time, which was ejected like a bullet due to the force of the punch. Those two details combine to make this video a late front-runner for 2014 Unsanctioned Fight of the Year. If you have any better candidates, let us know.

* I’m going to assume these people are Russian, because the full video of this incident was originally uploaded to the FromRussiaWithLOLs YouTube account. And that’s what passes for fact-checking around here.

Melvin Guillard Misses Weight (Again!) for WSOF 15, Fight Against Justin Gaethje Now a Non-Title Bout

(This. / Photo via Sherdog)

For all his insistence that he’s an “A-list fighter,” Melvin Guillard is pulling some bush league crap during his current stint with World Series of Fighting. Guillard missed weight by two pounds before his WSOF debut in July — a second-round knockout of Gesias Cavalcante — and the Young Assassin has blown it again, weighing in at a hefty 158.8 pounds today for his scheduled WSOF 15 title fight against reigning champ Justin Gaethje.

Guillard was given two hours to lose the additional weight, but since a belt was on the line, he’d have to hit 155 on the button…which wasn’t going to happen. Instead, Guillard agreed to a 50% fine of his purse (!!) and the fight will proceed as a non-title bout. Fun fact: Melvin Guillard also missed weight for one of his UFC bouts, coming in at 157.5 pounds before getting knocked out by Donald Cerrone at UFC 150.

Everybody else made weight for the “Branch vs. Okami” WSOF event, which goes down tomorrow at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida, and features three two title fights, including one involving a lady who’s now getting sued. Related question: Is “World Series of Fighting” the most hilariously ironic promotion name in MMA history?

Video: Chael Sonnen Breaks Down Fabricio Werdum vs. Mark Hunt on SportsCenter

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for — Chael Sonnen‘s debut appearance as a professional sports-talker on ESPN. In this clip that aired earlier today on SportsCenter, Sonnen breaks down tomorrow night’s UFC 180 main event between Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt, answering discussion questions from some random stiff* who mispronounces Werdum’s name, disses Roy Nelson’s gut, and ends the segment by bringing up the return of Brock Lesnar. Actually, that part spurred Chael’s best line:

“I called [Lesnar's] manager Paul Heyman this morning. I said, ‘Paul, it’s Chael. I’ve got a new job on SportsCenter. If you give me a quote regarding Brock, it’ll really make me look good.’ He said ‘Chael,’ and I quote: ‘I’m sleeping,’ and then he hung up.”

* I mean, I’m sure some of you people watch ESPN and know who Chael’s straight-man is, but I don’t, and he’s not worth googling.

Barnburner Alert: Welterweight Prospects Brandon Thatch and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson to Collide at Fight Night Broomfield

(Thatch awakens from a rage blackout to find that he has claimed yet another victim. Photo via Getty.)

A matchup between highly-skilled welterweight strikers Brandon Thatch and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has been booked for the UFC’s return to Colorado on February 14th, reports UFC.com.

The 29-year-old Thatch has made quite an impression in just 2 UFC performances, stopping veterans Justin Edwards and Paulo Thiago with strikes in a combined total of less than 4 minutes. Another fun fact about Thatch: He has stopped 11 out of his 12 opponents inside the first round, and 3 in less than 20 seconds. Got. Damn.

Thatch has also shown a willingness to take a shot to give one, however, which might not be the best strategy against a striker of Wonderboy’s caliber. Now 5-1 in the UFC and riding a 4-fight win streak, Thompson has looked almost untouchable in the octagon as of late, thanks in no small part to his wealth of kickboxing experience – 37 amateur and 20 professional matches, with 28 wins coming by knockout.

Predictions, please.

Random aside: Does anyone else miss the days when the UFC used to name each card? Numbering Fight Night cards make sense, sure, (and sounds a lot cooler than “Fight Night Broomfield”), but a return to naming the big cards would add a touch of flare to what many consider a continuously monotonous product. It would help each event stand out from the previous one, at the very least, and would occasionally make for some unintentionally hilarious results. And don’t even act like you wouldn’t be a *little* more excited for UFC 189: Battle in the Bayou 2 — Electric Boogaloo than Johnson vs. Stevenson, or whatever.

Hot Potato: 19 Photos of Katia Kubacki, Inked-Up Cage Conquest Ring Girl

(Props: BabesofMMA)

Just when you think that tattoos in MMA are a lost cause, along comes a ring girl like Katia Kubacki. A 23 year-old model and ring girl for such promotions as Cage Conquest, JNI Promotions, and Taipan Muay Thai Gym Fight Night, Katia has actually taken up MMA training in various gyms around her native Sydney and plans on making her amateur debut next year.

She also a lot of really, really great tattoos, if you’re into that sort of thing. You can check out the evolution of Katia’s ink, along with a bunch of our favorite photos of her in the gallery after the jump. If you like what you see, make sure to give Katia a follow on Instagram or Facebook.

Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza vs. Yoel Romero Added to UFC 184

(Real shirt, available here for $15. Finger-pointing swagger and missing tooth not included.)

A middleweight bout between top contenders Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Yoel Romero has been added to the stacked UFC 184: Weidman vs. Belfort lineup, February 28th in Los Angeles. The UFC confirmed the booking this morning.

It’s a match with high stakes, as it could theoretically produce a new title contender at 185-pounds. Jacare is currently listed as the #3 middleweight contender in the promotion’s rankings, and is a perfect 4-0 in the UFC with stoppage wins against Chris Camozzi, Yushin Okami, and Gegard Mousasi. Romero is ranked #6 and is 5-0 in the UFC, with four of those wins coming via KO/TKO. The “Soldier of God” most recently picked up a very controversial win against Tim Kennedy (#stoolgate), but nevertheless, this is a dangerous dude who can swing the hammers.

As it stands, UFC 184 will feature two title fights, a win-or-GTFO match in the heavyweight division, and now a potential #1 contender bout at middleweight. Meanwhile, this Saturday’s UFC 180 card in Mexico City is 59% non-wiki, but that’s none of my business.
