ICYMI: The Tito Ortiz-Stephan Bonnar Grudge Match Now Includes an Undercover Double Agent Storyline

(And this simply amazing/incoherent video.)

Things seemed to have calmed down a bit between Stephan Bonnar and Tito Ortiz following their plain cartoonish “brawl” at Bellator 123. Now less than a week out from their Grudge Match for the Ages at Bellator 131, the time for trash-talk has come and gone, thankfully, and the time to get this damn thing over with is nearly upon us. Now if only we can finish this sentence uninterrupt-

(*checks earpiece*)

What’s that? Tito’s saying what? What do you mean a spy is involved? (via Ortiz’s interview with MMAWeekly):

Well, it really came down to a plan, an idea that I thought would work, worked perfectly.

When I first signed with Bellator, I guess Dana (White) and Bonnar kind of had an idea that if they called me out, I would come back to the UFC and fight. And this was a year ago that this happened. And I wasn’t going to let that happen.

I wanted to fight in Bellator, so I signed with Bellator and I thought in my mind, ‘How can I get Bonnar to Bellator to finally shut him up and smash him after the things he said?’

And sneakily on my side, I got (fighter manager) Dave Thomas to sign him. Dave Thomas signed him and we had to think of something to make him believe that Dave Thomas doesn’t like me, that Paul Herrera didn’t like me. Paul Herrera was going to coach him. And Stephan Bonnar bit the line, hook and sinker. He thought in his own mind that all of his guys were against me and I fooled him.

And now it’s a week out from the fight. I know how his training camp went. I know the ins and outs. So he just got baited. That’s how bad I want to cave his face in.

War Machine Regrets Suicide Attempt, Discusses Life in Solitary and the Story of His Extradition

(Photo via Bellator)

It’s been nearly a month since War Machine (fka Jon Koppenhaver) attempted to hang himself in his jail cell at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, and a few of you might be wondering what the former UFC/Bellator fighter has been up to. Short version: He’s alive, and taking it one day at a time.

BloodyElbow passed along a letter that Koppenhaver posted to twitter two weeks ago, describing his suicide attempt and his subsequent lockup in solitary. We’ve re-printed that below, along with his latest update, in which War Machine discusses how his extradition from California to Las Vegas was one of the worst experiences of his life…though it contained a moment of true beauty and revelation.

War Machine’s tales of woe will take you back to those innocent Big House Blog days, when he was only jailed up for a year and not looking at a life of incarceration for attempted murder. Enjoy, I guess?

**********

Guilty Until Proven Innocent 2

Well, the only thing that sucks more than waking up (when you expect to be dead) has got to be the letters that you have to read from your loved ones…ugh. Should be the other way around, right? Knowing that people care should make one want to live, you’d think, unfortunately it’s still possible to feel very alone even when you’re in a room surrounded by people. Now if I kill myself I’ll feel even more guilty about it.

Life is a bitch, and do you know what they do to the most depressed/miserable inmates? They locked me up for an entire week, butt naked, in an even deeper, darker hole than the one I was already in: no phone, no mail, no books, no toothbrush, no snacks, nothing! Makes sense right? “How long had you been thinking of suicide? That long, why didn’t you tell us?” Yeah, let them know that I’m suicidal so that they can lock me up and treat me like that?! That shit right there would make even the happiest person suicidal, most miserable week of my life. When you complain about it they threaten to keep you longer, and ask, “Well, what did you expect would happen when you did this?” Uh…I thought I’d be a baby again or some shit??? Be, uh, dead?!

The announcement comes a month after the #2 promotion in MMA managed to scoop up Royce Gracie as a “brand ambassador” in what could only be considered a triumphant middle finger to the UFC. From a Bellator press release sent out earlier today:

M-1 Challenge Heavyweight Champion Guram Gugenishvili Dies in Car Wreck at 28

Heartbreaking news out of Georgia today, where it is being reported that former M-1 heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili has been killed in a car accident at the far too young age of 28. The announcement was made public on M-1′s Facebook page last night, along with a statement that read, “He was going to fight in Japan at the end of 2014 and come back to M-1 Global in 2015. He was a great athlete and a kind, open-hearted person.”

With a career record of 12-2, Gugenishvili fought almost exclusively under the M-1 banner, with his lone outside appearance being his most recent — a first round TKO over Tony Bonello at Inoki Genome Fight 1 back in April. The win followed a 16-month injury-related absence from the ring.

No immediate details have been available about the collision or Gugenishvili’s injuries, but we will keep you updated as information is made available. After the jump: A video of Guram’s aforementioned win over Bonello.

Hot Potato: 25 Photos of Rayssa Fernandes, XFC X-Girl

While putting together our gallery on XFC X-Girl Alessandra Batista a couple weeks ago, we discovered another Hot Potato-worthy Brazilian beauty named Rayssa Fernandes, who also holds round cards for XFC. Based in Sao Paulo, Rayssa is a law student and animal lover, and is dating MMA fighter Bruno Scornavacca, a 2-0 welterweight from the Chute Boxe camp.

Check out 25 of our favorite Rayssa Fernandes photos in the gallery after the jump — along with a rather amazing video of Rayssa and her co-workers in action — and follow her life on Instagram and Facebook.

The UFC Picked a Hell of a Week to Go to Mexico City…

(via reddit/MMA)

On Saturday night, protesters in Mexico City set fire to the front doors of the National Palace and attempted to break inside, in response to the abduction and mass murder of 43 students by drug cartel gangsters in September. Protests have been escalating since late last week, as outraged citizens and families of the victims blame local government officials and crooked police for the horrific incident.

The National Palace is about 7.5 miles away from the Arena Ciudad de México, which will host UFC 180: Werdum vs. Hunt this weekend, a card that has already been torn apart by injuries. Things were bad enough when the card lost Cain Velasquez as a headliner — now the UFC will have to pull off a show during a period of civil unrest, where people are literally trying to burn a palace down. International attention is on Mexico City right now for the worst possible reasons. Can an American cage-fighting promotion bring some healing to this terrible moment?

Short answer: No, of course not. At this point, UFC 180 has to be one of the top 5 most cursed events ever, and I honestly feel bad for the UFC, which really doesn’t happen often. Stay safe, everybody.

Falling Tree Spinning Backfist Knockout of the Day: Jessica Middleton Smashes Holly Torrez at Blackout FC 26

(Props: Blackout FC via MMALatestNews)

An amateur women’s slugfest Saturday night at Blackout FC 6 in Kansas City, MO, ended in a memorable knockout, as hard-hitting bantamweight prospect Jessica Middleton finished Holly Torrez with a nasty spinning backfist.

Torrez (wearing the sports bra) was the aggressor early on, keeping Middleton (in the purple rash guard) on the defensive and bloodying her nose with wild striking attacks. But at the video’s 2:31 mark, Middleton cracks Torrez with a spinning backfist, and two things happen: 1) Torrez suddenly gets very timid — or maybe she just realizes that she’s gassed — and 2) Middleton decides she’s going to keep throwing that damn spinning backfist until she knocks Torrez out with it. Amazingly, her plan works.

Early in the second three-minute round, Middleton gets some space and makes another attempt at the backfist, and lands it harder than ever; Torrez stiffens up and falls straight to the mat in classic falling tree style. Afterwards, Blackout FC announcer Gerald Harris presents Torrez with the event’s Knockout of the Night award, which is a gift certificate for a custom mouthpiece. It ain’t exactly fifty large, but we all have to start somewhere.

The Greatest Erotic MMA Fan Fiction of All Time

(Come up with your own caption, perverts. / Photo via Getty)

UFC Fight Night 56 happened last night and it was pretty boring. During the lull in action, we wondered if there was a prominent MMA fan fiction scene. It turns out there was! The only drawback: A vast majority of the stories featured prominent fighters having sex with other prominent fighters.

We’re not really sure how to say this with our characteristic irreverent tone, so we’re just going to flat out say it: There’s a shit load of MMA slash fic out there. We found it. It’s…well, you need to see for yourself. We don’t like to exaggerate in the headlines but this stuff is far out.

Please don’t construe this as us trying to insult the author. We’re the guys who watch Ultimate Surrender, so we can’t judge how anyone gets their rocks off. We just thought these stories were kind of funny. We think it’s great someone is passionate enough about MMA to write this kind of stuff, honestly. Here are some excerpts from the more wild stories:

OSP vs. Shogun: Actual (LEGAL) Footage of the Brutal Finish

Sometimes we hate being right. Last night on Twitter, we predicted Ovince St. Preux would run through Mauricio “Shogun” Rua without effort. We had no idea how prescient our tweet would be.

As you can see above, OSP dispatched the Pride legend without even exerting himself. It only took 34 seconds. To make it worse, Shogun absorbed a ton of unnecessary damage as Mario Yamasaki let OSP batter the Brazilian’s skull. Such slack-jawed gawking aside, this fight was entertaining for the violent spectacle that it was. OSP isn’t a man to write off, and Shogun definitely needs to retire in this point.

There were some other fights last night as well, but they weren’t really anything to write home about (and if you did wrote home about them, you’d get a reply that’s like “What are you talking about? Who the fuck are these people?”). But in case you’re one of the TRUE HARDCORE ULTIMATE BAD BOYZ who comments about how much we hate MMA on our Facebook page, we’ll post the card’s full results. Check them out after the jump.

(“Remember guys, Uberlandia is the most densely-populated man-made island turned garbage dump turned low-income housing development in the entire state of Minas Gerais, so let’s give these half-humanoid mutants a kickass show, okay?” / Photo via MMAJunkie)

Live, from a Brazilian city you’ve never heard of, comes UFC Fight Night 56: Shogun vs. St. Preux! Featuring: Mauricio Rua fighting a late replacement, Ian McCall not fighting that guy who rarely makes weight on the first try, the return of Mr. Handsome, and the non-wiki all stars.

Note: Due to the McCall-Lineker cancellation, our man Alex Giardini will be providing a play-by-play for only the main event, and filling in results and GIF-links for everything else, saving you from the hassle of watching a likely garbage-ass South American card that’s sure to go past your bedtime. We’re taking the bullet for this one, because we love you so much.

The FOX Sports 1 main card kicks off at 10:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. PT, so follow us after the jump, refresh the page every few minutes for all the latest results, and toss in your own thoughts in the comments section or on twitter @cagepotatomma. Thanks for coming.
