ICYMI: Ian McCall Actually ISN’T Fighting Tonight Due to Illness

UFC Fight Night 56 just lost its co-main event: Ian McCall vs. John Lineker.

The UFC made an announcement about McCall’s condition earlier this morning, stating that McCall had “taken ill” after the weigh ins in Brazil and withdrew as a result.

There is no replacement for McCall, so Lineker just won’t fight and Alan Jouban vs. Warlley Alves will be upgraded to co-main event.

Missed weight, eh buddy? Gotta cut another three-fifths of a pound? Sucks, man. You must be super thirsty right now, huh? Dehydrated? That’s just the pits. Anyway, I’m gonna go ahead and chug this coconut water in front of you. Damn that’s good, better have a little more. Yeah, that’s the stuff right there. Welp, good luck in the sauna bro.”

LMAO…props to Ian McCall for a truly classic dick-move.

UFC Fight Night 56 Weigh-In Results: John Lineker Comes in Heavy AGAIN, Damn It [UPDATED]

The most consistently overweight fighter in UFC history has done it again, folks. Weigh-ins for UFC Fight Night 56: Shogun vs. St. Preux just concluded in Uberlandia, Brazil, with everybody hitting their marks except for — you guessed it — flyweight John Lineker, who came in at 126.7 on his first attempt.

That’s not quite as bad when Lineker weighed in at 127 pounds for his Octagon debut at UFC on FOX 3, or when he weighed in at 129 pounds before UFC 163, or when he weighed in at 128 pounds before UFC Fight Night 30, but still dude, get it together for God’s sake. Lineker also missed weight on his first attempt before UFC 169, but made it on his second try. Maybe the same thing will happen today and he won’t be responsible for a fourth catchweight fight in the UFC. We’ll update you after LOLineker‘s final appearance on the scale.

Update: Lineker made 126 pounds on his second try. But that’s five times out of eight UFC weigh-ins where Lineker hasn’t hit the mark on his first attempt — a 37.5% success rate. Not the kind of stat you want to be known for.

Wanderlei Silva Continues His Fighter Pay Crusade in New Video ‘For the Warriors’

(Props: wandfightteam)

Now that he’s been permanently drummed out of the sport for dodging a random drug test in May, Wanderlei Silva is continuing his quest to become the voice of ethics in MMA, or something like that. His latest video (titled “Round 2 – For the Warriors. Pelos Guerreiros”) is another assault on unfair fighter pay and the general mistreatment of MMAA fighters by promotions.

Silva begins by explaining that fighters’ love of the sport can blind them to people taking advantage of them, but when promotions — and he’s really only talking about the UFC, here — are worth billions and fighters need to beg for money, something is very wrong. “What would happen if the events shared, in a more dignifying manner, their profits with the athletes?” Silva asks. “The athletes are already out there giving their blood, imagine if they got paid better.”

While the video doesn’t reach “screaming in a basement with heavy metal blasting” levels of intensity, Silva does get rather fired up talking about the responsibility of promoters to take care of their fighters. He seems especially pissed about fighters having to travel in economy class with only one trainer’s flight being covered, and the UFC’s time-honored practice of burying its own fighters. But, “things will change once they start to feel it in the only place that matters to them. Which is not in their heart because they don’t have one. It’s in their pockets.” SHOTS FIRED.

Report: Former PRIDE and Rings Veteran Hans Nijman Killed in Drive-By Shooting

One-time PRIDE fighter and Rings MMA veteran Hans Nijman was killed in a drive-by shooting in his native Holland on Wednesday evening, reports De Telegraf.

Nijman, whose lone PRIDE appearance resulted in a first round submission via scarf lock to Kazuyuki Fujita in the opening round of the 2000 PRIDE Grand Prix, was gunned down by assailants while sitting in his Volkswagen outside of his gym. According to Sherdog, “Witnesses reportedly saw two cars open fire on Nijman with automatic weapons before fleeing and ultimately burning the two vehicles in the nearby town of Velserbroek, Netherlands.”

The shocking incident was not completely unforeseeable for the 55-year-old, unfortunately. Nijman allegedly held ties to several organized Dutch crime syndicates and has faced police investigation over the past few years for various crimes, including drug trafficking and extortion. His gym is also partially owned by Dick Vrij, who recently returned to prison voluntarily for fear of his life. (Ed note: It just goes to show that anyone named Hans is either a professional water polo player or a criminal mastermind with a penchant for small talk.)

Nijman has not competed professionally since suffering a second round defeat via armbar to Cheick Kongo in 2003. Having fought exclusively for the Rings promotion from 1995-2000, Nijman compiled a professional record of 9-6 overall.

UFC Lifts Suspension of Anthony Johnson, After Domestic Abuse-Related Civil Case Is Dismissed

(Photo via Getty)

Seven weeks after Anthony Johnson was indefinitely suspended by the UFC following accusations of abuse and intimidation from the mother of two of his children, the UFC light-heavyweight contender has been cleared to compete again. The UFC broke the news earlier today in an announcement on UFC.com, explaining that the accuser had dropped her complaint. Here’s the full statement:

The person who filed a civil temporary protection order against UFC contender Anthony Johnson last September voluntarily dismissed their complaint last week in the Florida Circuit Court. Before granting a dismissal of the case, the presiding judge independently questioned the alleging party regarding their voluntary intentions, and thereafter the judge dismissed the entire matter.

The dismissal of the case, along with an independent investigation that was commissioned by the UFC organization, brings closure to this matter for Johnson and allows him to return to competition in the UFC. As a result, UFC officials are exploring options for Johnson’s next fight to take place early next year.

The UFC organization will not tolerate domestic violence, sexual assault or any other violation of its Code of Conduct. The organization is committed to thoroughly investigating all allegations and taking the appropriate action when warranted.

So It Turns Out a Back Injury Was to Blame For Rousey vs. Zingano Being Delayed (Again)

We know what you’re thinking, “How could someone with the kind of dexterity displayed above ever suffer from back problems?” And to be honest, we can’t really tell you, but we do now know that back issues were to blame for the most recent delay in the Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano title fight.

If you recall, Zingano vs. Rousey was supposed to serve as the co-main event of UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier on January 3rd, but was suddenly pushed back 2 months to the co-main event of UFC 184 in February for undisclosed reasons. The online community’s reaction to this development came swiftly and with vengeance, falling just below their reaction to the title of the next Stars Wars movie on the scale of Faux Internet Outrage.

“I’ve gotta wait two more months for this sh*tty fight? Rousey is so fake!” cried @DopeBeatzforJeezus.

“Oversaturation in MMA is the single biggest problem facing America, and this is proof of that. #ThanksObama #TBT #PrayforWeezy” wrote @Uzi4U2.

Well, it turns out the UFC actually had a legitimate reason for delaying Rousey vs. Zingano…AND YOU’LL NEVER GUESS WHAT IT IS.

Video: Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold Exchange Pleasantries at the Fight Night 55 Pre-Fight Press Conference [LOL JK]

(*channeling Jay Leno*)

So apparently, UFC middleweight contenders Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold are not the biggest fans of each other. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? Turns out they have something of a long-running feud dating back to when Bisping broke gym code and declared himself the “unofficial Strikeforce champion” following a sparring session with Rockhold. And now the two will ehhhh…fight this weekend at Fight Night 55 in Sydney, Australia. You know what seems odd to me about all this? That Vitor Belfort hasn’t declared himself the “unofficial Strikeforce G.O.A.T” yet!

At the pre-fight press conference in Sydney yesterday afternoon, Bisping and Rockhold continued to trade barbs — Rockhold mocked the fresh cut above Bisping’s eye he recently suffered in training, while the Brit calmly reminded Rockhold that he had “no f*cking idea” what he was getting himself into. Even Chris Weidman, who was in attendance with his trusty sidekick Ray Longo, got in on the action when asked how he thought the fight would play out. Check out some highlights from the conference above, then make sure to catch the weigh-ins tonight starting at 9 p.m. EST.
