TUF 21 Finale Highlights/Results: Wonderboy KTFO’s Ellenberger, Waterson, Masvidal Score Big Wins

(Thompson vs. Ellenberger highlights, via UFC on FOX)

Gee golly, that Wonderboy Thompson sure can do some fancy things with his feets, can’t he?

If the MMA community wasn’t already high enough on the undefeated kickboxer before his clash with Jake Ellenberger at the TUF 21 Finale, then the *pair* of spinning hook kicks he used to put the veteran away likely made believers out of all of us. Minus a heavy right hook that Thompson ate early in the fight, “Wonderboy” was in complete control on Sunday, utilizing his lengthy, karate-style attack to brutalize Ellenberger before finishing him off with a “Knockout of the Year” contender at the end of the first round.

Check out the complete highlights and results from the TUF 21 Finale after the jump.

UFC 189 Aftermath: For Slavery Fled, O Glorious Dead, When You Fell in the Foggy Dew

Us MMA fans are a diverse and passionate bunch, which is why it’s truly a rare occurrence to see us unite in agreement over a given topic no matter how trivial. Whether it’s a simple fight pick or our reactions to something bigger — the Reebok deal, for instance — you will always find a broad range of reactions, from positive to incredibly negative (also, hurtful, misogynistic, and erroneously punctuated), strewn across every forum and comments section on the web. But not with UFC 189.

In my 5 years of covering the sport, I don’t know if I’ve *ever* witnessed an event quite like UFC 189. Over the course of the night, our reactions unanimously shifted from excited, to shocked, to overwhelmed, to an emotion that is not yet defined but can best be described as “HWAHHHNNNGGG!!!!” We were *all* the Just Bleed guy by the end of Saturday night, and two days later, I’m still not ready to wash the paint off my chest. It just feels right, you know?

UFC 189 was the kind of event that made us remember why we’ve stuck by this sport as it’s biggest promotion has made one disastrous decision after another. It was the kind of event that almost transcended combat sports in its ability to entertain and captivate. It was the kind of event that Matt Saccaro couldn’t find any holes in, you guys.

Gambler’s Gambit: ‘UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor’

(Yup, that pretty much nails it. via Urijah Faber’s Instagram)

By Santino DeFranco

First, let me say, I’m no professional gambler, but who really is? What I am is a former professional fighter and a trainer of multiple UFC fighters, and I’ve recently (last few years—not, like, today’s my first time) started betting on fights. I’ve also been doing very well with my bets, so I thought I’d share them with you. So strap in for this, the inaugural edition of Gambler’s Gambit, or, Smart Fights to Not Lose Your Ass On at UFC 189.

CagePotato Presents: A Fight University Breakdown of ‘UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor’ — Starring Santino DeFranco!

Look, we are well aware that we here at CagePotato have never been considered the go-to source for expert fight analysis (or timely delivered news, or comedic-themed MMA content, even…). That was, until now! We are proud to present an exclusive, recurring video series which previews and breaks down the biggest matchups from upcoming UFC events, all technical like. This is Fight University, starring former UFC fighter Santino DeFranco!

If you recall, Santino DeFranco is a 13-4 MMA veteran and TUF 9 alum who has competed under the Bodog, King of the Cage, and K-1 banners and scored wins over Melvin Guillard and Waylon Lowe (among others). DeFranco also happens to hold an MFA in creative writing, and in addition to the exclusive recaps he wrote for us while competing on the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter, has written for Fightland and Sherdog. Suffice it to say, dude’s qualified.

Check out Santino’s inaugural installment above, which previews the last-minute (but still hotly-anticipated) interim featherweight title fight between Conor McGregor and Chad Mendes at UFC 189 this weekend. And if that’s not awesome enough, keep an eye out for Gambler’s Gambit, an updated version of our gambling enabler pieces that DeFranco will *also* be penning for us moving forward. The first entry of that series drops tomorrow!

GIF of the Year Candidate: One FC Flyweight Ze Wu’s Transcendent, Flying Cartwheel Groin Stomp

I don’t know how this gif has flown under the radar in the month since One FC 28 went down, but my God, you guys, it is glorious.

Around the midway point of a flyweight contest between the 2-1 Ze Wu and then-undefeated prospect Jianbing Yang, Wu attempted…something. I’m not exactly sure what it was, but I do know that it was equal parts Chad Mendes somersault guard pass and the Eric Prindle-Thiago Santos groin strike saga personified in one move. Possibly while under the influence of a mind-altering drug, Zu lept into the air, cartwheeled over Yang’s outstretched legs, and landed a direct strike to his nards. Then proceeded to walk away and shrug as if he didn’t understand what the big deal was.

Never before have we ever seen an illegal blow so simultaneously devastating and… beautiful — I dare say that it will redefine our understanding of the groin strike altogether. We tried to reach out to nutshot aficionado Joe Rogan for comment, who could only offer this expression before retreating back into his home.

After the jump: An alternate angle of the strike and a video of it happening in real-time.

UFC 189: A Complete A-to-Z Preview

By Nasir Jabbar

So Nation, as expected the most lavishly-promoted fight in UFC history has gone up in smoke. God. Dammit. What could of caused such wrath from the MMA gods? Oh, yeah. Thanks #UFCFightKit.

Anyways, the UFC did secure a back-up plan for the “Notorious” one in Team Alpha Male stud Chad Mendes. The two-time title challenger had been brought into Las Vegas as stand-by, as luck would of have it, was drafted in the 11th hour. Mendes is still a solid replacement against McGregor considering their heated arguments and arguably a tougher stylistic match-up, even if it’s not the fight we were all hoping for. But before I spiral into a deep depression, let’s get into the A-to-Z preview of this weekend’s still pretty epic event, shall we?

VIDEO: This Epic Movie Fight Scene Compilation Hits Harder Than a Cobra Kai Kick

Youtube mashup extraordinaire Robert Jones has done it again with this, his second compilation of the greatest movie fight scenes in cinema history. From Bane vs. Batman to Norris vs. Lee, this totally badass video will almost certainly help take your mind off some of the, um, more depressing news that today has given us. You know, if you pay no attention to the fact that this mashup is set to the tune of Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up.” Or that Rumble Johnson makes a brief appearance from his cameo in Warrior.

I hate that I even pointed that out, but to steer the conversation anywhere else, how f*cking awesome is Donnie Yen? The guy easily has one of the top 5 greatest “Come at me, bro” poses of all time, and now he’s joining the new Star Wars franchise? Ip Man has always been a Jedi, it’s just good to see him finally getting the official title he deserves.

You know what, today has been a good day.

After the jump: Part 1 of Jones’ epic movie fights series.

Brittney Palmer’s Husband Charged With Attempted Murder Following Struggle in LA Home

(Palmer and Zalewski at the 6th annual Fighters Only Awards. via Getty.)

The life of a ring girl is a surprisingly mysterious one, as we’ve come to learn, chock full of tumultuous relationships, betrayals, and secret double lives a pornstars. Being tasked with maintaining such a flawless physique and appearance on a 24/7 basis creates a kind of powder keg situation in the workplace, which unfortunately, usually explodes long after the octagon-shaped cards have been put down. In short, there’s a reason that Showgirls was the massive box office and critical success that it was, and it’s because it resonated with us.

That being said, this report coming out of Los Angeles involving longtime UFC octagon girl Brittney Palmer is easily the most insane/disturbing piece of ring girl news we’ve ever seen.
