[UPDATED] 209ers Lament: It Looks Like a Condit/Diaz Rematch Will NOT Be Happening

A great man once said that if you tweet it, they will come. Yes it seems that after days of tireless bitching reasonable pleas, we will in fact be treated to a Carlos Condit/Nick Diaz rematch in the near future. DW broke the news yesterday via his Twitter (go figure):

Perhaps the strangest aspect of this story is that it was Condit, not Diaz, who approached White to request the rematch. After being subjected to heated public outcry in the wake of his unanimous decision win at UFC 143, Condit went against the advice of both his camp and his manager to ensure that the fight was booked. So you can say what you want about Condit’s recent performance, but you have to respect a guy who’s willing to possibly lose yet another chance at facing GSP, all for the sake of the fans.┬áThat’s three thus far, Shooter.

As of this write up, Diaz has yet to accept the fight, and according to Cesar Gracie, is unsure if he even wants it anymore. Here’s what Gracie had to say on the subject, via his Twitter:

@ufc@danawhite Condit vs Diaz or Gsp will not happen this year. Being interviewed by Ariel Helwanie in 5 minutes. He will break the story.

Less than an hour after tweeting this, Gracie appeared to change his mind, stating that “things are being considered.” Considered? THERE’S NO ROOM FOR THAT KIND OF TALK IN THE 209.

What will be interesting to see is how the UFC markets this rematch, granted Diaz accepts it. Yes, the decision was controversial to many (not to me), and yes, a polarizing figure like Diaz can hype a fight in his sleep, but their first meeting clearly failed to live up to the hype, and are we to believe that Condit will try all that different a strategy the second time around considering his success the first time?

We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

Holy shit. Maybe Nick is more serious than we thought about this whole “retirement” hullabaloo. According to multiple sources, it appears that Diaz has turned down a rematch with Condit due to “issues” within his camp. Apparently Diaz’s coach and manager Cesar Gracie has stated that he believes the rematch will not take place and told The MMA Show that “everything will be out soon,” just a little while ago. Apologies for the vagueness, but that is LITERALLY the best we can offer you at this point in time, as details are still sketchy at best.

[UPDATED...sort of]

Jesus Christ; as I am writing this, I see that CesarGracieBJJ just tweeted the following to Dana White:

@danawhite Nick would rematch in a heartbeat. No extra money needed. He is a true fighter and fights for his team and you fans.

WHAT. THE. FUCK. Cesar, you are making me look like more of a fool than usual with this shit. Ugh. Let’s just assume for now that the fight is off. Now here’s a photo of a bunny with a pancake on its head. Enjoy, and good day, Potato Nation.

@Gobbler, since you still don't seem to comprehend the difference between striking and boxing (i.e. what we here call "MMA"), I'm just going to have to recommend you go do some reading, work on your comprehension skills and return to us at a later date. But to answer your question; as I said, Condit has superior skills IN THE MORE COMPLETE STRIKING DISCIPLINE of Muay Thai, which is why/how he won that fight. And @ XENO, you do have it COMPLETELY wrong buddy. Watch the fight again, I know you still won't be able to muster an ounce of objectivity, but... from the very beginning, Condit disengages to reset in the center of the ring, where he proceeds to engage on his timing and range when he can - as a counter-striker, and does so more effectively than Diaz.

Here's where i am with this....i despise diaz as a person...he's like many punks i've known over the years...but i love to watch both him and his brother fight....condit i've liked....generally, he faces his opponents and proves himself the better fighter...with this fight, i think there was frustration on both sides....i could see on carlos' face a look of frustration at times, as if he wanted to bang, but his corner wouldn't allow it if you listened during the fight....i believe that all the furor over this fight(which right or wrong, has been over with for a week, and nothing anybody does can change the judges scorecards) has shown carlos that he needs to maybe change his gameplan from a fast forty to finding a way of avoiding nick's boxing without getting taken down....i can see condit taking this fight yet, just as much as i can see diaz taking it....btw, i had it for diaz, but thought it was close either way....

Condit has got into diaz' head now. condit could go in & play his own game finally, diaz is now broken. the game played out diaz in the loss & zuffa for pumping diaz, they both lost, now we get a rematch that will start the entire endless rubber matches all ovber again, Tito shamroch 5 & everything. fake fire diaz humbling fake bring him back, pull the wool over everyone's eyes by having another suckers rematch to loot idiots willing to pay 50 shells for the same porn show you watch for free at the bar. nice. they should call this ufc the idiots who buy into it, ufc 69. drilled by the hammer valentine.

Edit Button - went as far away from it as his little ballet slippers would carry his ass. Or did I get that wrong?
XENOPHON- February 8, 2012 at 9:11 pm
djp1988 - hold up one second big pimp. Everything you said was rational, except this hot shot "...He (Condit) was getting away and kept repositioning himself in the center of the octagon, keeping himself from getting cornered." ..... if memory is correct, Condit did everything he could to stay out of the middle went as far away from itas his little ballet slippers would carry his ass. Or did I get that wrong?

djp1988- February 8, 2012 at 5:37 pm
And I know realize a small novel later that "." doesn't work for a paragraph break anymore. Apologies on that.
djp1988- February 8, 2012 at 5:36 pm
I know rationality is out the window right now (that's why I fucking love this site), but here's where I'm at with Condit:
If you're fighting Damian Maia you're best bet is to keep the fight standing.
If you're fighting Anderson Silva you're best bet is to try wrestling.
If you're fighting Chael Sonnen, you're best bet is to go for subs.
Condit's best bet in that fight is what he did: He kept Nick Diaz from playing to the strengths of Nick Diaz. He didn't take it to the ground for fear of his jiu jitsu, and he kept himself from getting cornered and taking Diaz's volume punching.
Was it fun to watch? Not really. Was he running? Kind of, but personally leaning towards not really. He was getting away and kept repositioning himself in the center of the octagon, keeping himself from getting cornered. He wasn't Kalib Starnes-ing it by any means, and his combinations were pretty damn impressive.
And before anyone gets on me about being a nuthugger for Condit, I actually lost 20 bucks on this fight, because I went for Diaz. I know, high roller shit, dog.
holeeball- February 8, 2012 at 5:22 pm
It's not like it's a new thing. Other fighters have managed to talk their way into the fights they want like the monoball chael sonnen for instance. Other don't even need to whine like brock lesnar... they get instantly promoted to contender so in that regard this is pretty much LOL. Fitch otoh failed to dry hump his way into contention :( would have been an epic dry humping contest indeed
RwilsonR- February 8, 2012 at 4:54 pm
Haven't read through the other 99 comments yet, but the whole idea of this is just fucking stupid. Nick Diaz is the new BJ Penn. Whine enough about how unfairly you've been treated and get your bitchy little fans to throw away their Midol and go all PMS on the internet, and that gets you a rematch you don't deserve. The only person being treated unfairly is Condit.
Gobbleston- February 8, 2012 at 3:28 pm
So, being the more complete and superior striker, he would win that fight, toe to toe, no "strategy". And I've only started watching MMA last week?
I'm absolutely not discounting muay tai, but toe to toe with Diaz is a horrible idea for any fighter that isn't a champ in one of the current higher weight classes.
jfjjfjff- February 8, 2012 at 3:24 pm
can't you just make a new post? this thread is clusterfuck.

Why the hell wpuld Diaz want a rematch? HE DOES MORE THAN ENOUGH RUNNING IN THOSE TRIATHLONS! No need to run after Condit for 5 more rounds..
