The 25 Greatest MMA Knockouts of 2009

(Bisping, Arlovski, Griffin, and Swanson: Four of the year’s most unfortunate victims.)

#25: Vitor Belfort sends Matt Lindland into convulsions at Affliction: Day of Reckoning (1/24/09).

#24. Gegard Mousasi makes his presence known in America by pounding Renato Sobral flat at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg (8/15/09).

#23: Matt Hamill unleashes his inner Cro Cop against Mark Munoz at UFC 96 (3/7/09).

#22: Brett Rogers storms Andrei Arlovski in 22 seconds at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields (6/6/09).

#21: Todd Duffee power-jabs his way to the fastest (official) knockout in UFC history against Tim Hague at UFC 102 (8/29/09).

#20: Shane Carwin rebounds from early trouble to score his 11th-straight first-round stoppage against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 (3/7/09). Turn your sound down unless you like to hear rednecks screaming "Boo-Yah!"

#19: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua returns to his old form — and sinks another nail into Chuck Liddell‘s career-coffin — at UFC 97 (4/18/09).

#18: Hayato Sakurai blasts Shinya Aoki out of DREAM’s welterweight GP quarterfinals with some old-school knees to the head on the ground. (4/5/09)

#17: Paulo Thiago scores a monster upset in his Octagon debut at UFC 95 with his hellish 1-2 on Josh Koscheck (2/21/09).

#16: Nick Pace connects with a savage flying knee against Collin Tebo at Bellator XI, bashes his mouthpiece out, then does a gross little dance (6/12/09).

#15: Jay Hieron lands a brutal right hook — then throws in a few more completely unnecessary shots — against Jason High at Affliction: Day of Reckoning (1/24/09).

#14: Nate Marquardt sends Demian Maia into a tailspin at UFC 102 (8/29/09).

#13: Nate Marquardt ruins Wilson Gouveia via 10-hit combo at UFC 95 (2/21/09).

Oh heck, I don't want to see this. I have issues regarding UFC, I can't bear to watch it.

Man, Marquardt's combo is unreal -- Killer Instinct straight-up.

. . . a snail crawling across a straight razor. This is my dream. This is my nightmare.

No more drugs at work.

I didn't see nothin!

Arlovski was watching a bull ant crawling across the mat, and I was watching Arlovski watching the bull ant!

@Whitey - Fuck Yes.

I like the Hammill fight because watching it with no sound makes me feel the way Matt does during a fight (save for all the blood in his eyes).-

@Richard Tucker

Heh, I hate to be a dick, but it was actually a 6-3 (right uppercut, left hook). 4-3 would be right hook, left hook...but you're right... why get technical :)?

I guess "hellish 6-3 on Josh Koscheck" doesn't have the same ring.

this post has kept me entertained for sooooo damn long.... fucking awesome. Consider this forwarded to everyone in the OC area.

gotta love CP! where else can you go from waxing intellectual about a nice article on one post to using exclamations like "BOOYAH" about nice knockouts on the next. FUCKIN A!

That's a short right to make someone fold like that

Skeletor, the heading is The Best Knockouts of 2009.
skeletor- December 29, 2009 at 10:35 am
What about liddell v couture or any Crocop head kick? Weak list you guys are slipping CP.
macreadysshack- December 29, 2009 at 10:30 am
Hey, Dick Tucker . . . I was thinking the very same thing. Why get technical? Because it's what we do around here . . . Nice catch.
macreadysshack- December 29, 2009 at 10:28 am
@Carl Sagan you are a lucky bastard.

@Steampunk22 It's about time you showed up.
Richard Tucker- December 29, 2009 at 9:52 am
Thiago's "1-2" was more of a "4-3," but why get technical...
Carl Sagan- December 29, 2009 at 9:52 am
Damn, that seizure Lindland has is still disturbing. Machida's domination of Rashad is my personal favorite. But that is probably because I was at that fight and screamed victory until my lungs burned.
steampunk22- December 29, 2009 at 9:48 am

I know, we havent had enough time to bask in our own cleverness! Damn you CP!

I remember all of these fights.

I particularly like the Hamill head kick, very little telegraphing, Munoz doesn't see it coming.

And yeah, Nate The Great is the fucking man. The 10-hit combo is UFC legend.

I feel bad for Koscheck still in that fight, plenty of other fighters have gotten a chance to recover from far worse situations. While I don't dispute the stoppage, its too bad he didnt fall into that category of "give him another second or two just to see what happens" because it looks like he got it together pretty quick.

Time to go check out the rest of them....

macreadysshack- December 29, 2009 at 9:37 am
Marquardt is a fucking Cuisinart.

Damn it, CP, slow down on the features. We still haven't finished being ridiculous on the last one!
