Dan Henderson vs. Daniel Cormier Officially Booked as UFC 173 Co-Main Event in May

(Cormier opens a can of whoop ass on Phil Cumens…er…Paul Cummings…let’s just call him “Pete” at UFC 170. Photo via Getty.)

Although the fight was originally being targeted for UFC 175 on 4th of July weekend, Dana White broke the news on Sportscenter earlier today that the light heavyweight #1ish contender match between Daniel Cormier and Dan Henderson has officially been booked as the co-main event of UFC 173: Weidman vs. Belfort vs. Machida Barao vs. Dillashaw, which transpires on May 24th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fight will serve as a quick turnaround for Henderson, who was getting his ass handed to him by Mauricio Rua at Fight Night 38 in March before scoring a miracle comeback KO via H-Bomb in the third round of their hotly-anticipated rematch. Cormier, on the other hand, barely broke a sweat in his last fight: a 79-second TKO over Pete Cumpins…Pat Culmings (damn it, so close!) at UFC 170.

Recovery advantage: Cormier. Age, speed, size, and strength advantage: Also Cormier. “You darn kids quit skateboarding on the sidewalks!” advantage: Hendo. Call me crazy, but I’m liking Hendo here.

The full UFC 173 lineup is after the jump.

Old Man Liddell Thinks He Could Have KO’d Jon Jones in His Prime, And Doesn’t Like the Way Chael Sonnen Sells Fights

(“These damn kids with their sagging pants and exposed mid-riffs. Good luck getting a job, you punk!”)

Because this weekend’s UFC 172 title fight between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira isn’t quite interesting enough to discuss, FOX Sports’s Marc Raimondi decided to ask Teixeira’s longtime training partner Chuck Liddell how he would have done against Jones, back when he was in his prime. Chuck’s answer is both eye-rollingly delusional and totally unsurprising:

Liddell loves Jones’ overall game, but is not at all impressed with his punching power. He thinks if the two would have fought in his prime, he would have knocked Jones out.

I think I would have been a horrible matchup for him,” Liddell told FOX Sports. “I would have walked through his punches and he wouldn’t have caught me with anything…I would have found a way to hit him,” Liddell said, “and I hit too hard.

The “walked through his punches” part is my favorite; it’s just so Leben-esque. There’s a lot more I can say here, but our own Matt Saccaro beat me to it:

Those are the only correct responses. If you believe otherwise, you’re stuck in a fanboy time-warp. And Chuck? Please don’t turn into Royce Gracie. We’re begging you.

Speaking of the Iceman crapping on current UFC stars, Liddell also took some time to diss Chael Sonnen’s self-promotion routine:

Classic Fight: Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson Put On a Fight of the Year at UFC 165

Ahead of what could very well be his seventh title defense against Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 this weekend, we still can’t seem to stop talking about Jon Jonessixth title defense against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165. It’s not without merit; the fight was an all-out war that earned Fight of the Year honors in 2013 and is sure to be listed among the greatest light heavyweight fights (not to mention title fights) of all time when the robots inevitably enslave humanity. While Jones’ grittiness and determination lead him to victory that night in September, it was Gustafsson’s dynamic performance that surprised and captivated most of us, especially considering how we had all but written him off in the weeks prior.

The fight remains the toughest test of Jones’ almost untouchable MMA career, and now, a Rocky montage-version of the fight has been made available on the UFC’s Youtube channel. Not only that, the promotion has introduced the fight as part of its Flashback! series, which includes “never-before-seen footage from state-of-the-art, specialty cameras, and exclusive new sound captured from all corners.”

Relive the epic fight above, then let us know how much you enjoyed watching “The Mauler” put them hot hands all over Jones’ forehead in the comments section.

-J. Jones

The Greatest Fights in MMA History Tournament: And the Winner Is…

Was there ever any doubt?

After four ferocious rounds of voting, we are pleased to announce that Don Frye vs. Yoshihiro Takayama (PRIDE 21, 6/23/02) has earned the title of Greatest Fight in MMA History! Frye vs. Takayama whipped Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua 1 in the tournament finals, taking a full 68% of the vote. Along the way, the classic brawl beat out Fedor Emelianenko vs. Mirko Cro Cop, Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Royce Gracie 1, and Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 1 — not an easy path through the bracket, but Frye/Takayama made it look easy.

In honor of this momentous occasion, check out the Don Frye vs. Yoshihiro Takayama fight video above and the Don Frye quote-reel below. Thanks to everybody who voted, and if you have any ideas for future bracket features on CagePotato, let us know in the comments section!

CP After Dark: One-Time UFC Vet Homer Moore Arrested For Role in 1999 Drug-Related Murder

(Moore’s mugshot via the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office)

So this is pretty f*cked up.

If you happen to be a hardcore MMA fan with a near-perfect memory dating back roughly a dozen years, you might remember Homer “Rock” Moore from his lone appearance at UFC 34: High Voltage, which resulted in a second round loss via armbar to Evan Tanner. No? Well, perhaps you might remember Moore from his notable scraps with such UFC veterans as Chael Sonnen, Dan Severn, Jeremy Horn, and Joe Riggs among others. Ringing any bells?

If you still are coming up short in regards to Mr. Moore, fret not, for you’ll surely remember his name after you read this. Earlier today, Moore was arrested in connection with a particularly brutal murder of a 19-year-old man in Tempe, Arizona that took place back in 1999. According to AZ Central, Moore was allegedly one of several men who helped lure Karam Hussein Jabbar into a townhouse as part of a drug deal, only to suffocate Jabbar and stuff him into the trunk of a car that they then abandoned in a grocery store parking lot. Some fifteen years later, police were finally able to gather enough evidence to arrest him:

The case began in August 1999 when Jabbar, a 19-year-old retail salesman from Scottsdale, was found in the trunk of a vehicle with his hands and feet bound and a bag over his head in the parking lot of a grocery store in Mesa.

According to police, Jabbar was set up by Moore.

Moore and Jabbar met through a mutual acquaintance, and Jabbar was going to take marijuana to Moore and a group of others. But Moore and the others planned to rob Jabbar, he said. The group took Jabbar to a townhouse in Tempe, where the murder took place.

Police found the body after complaints of a smell coming from the abandoned vehicle were reported.

Ranking All Nine Fights on the Bellator PPV Card, By My Interest Level

By Seth Falvo

To surprisingly little reaction this weekend, Bellator announced that the lineup for Bellator 120: Alvarez vs. Chandler 3 — also known as the promotion’s first pay-per-view event — has been set. (Bellator 120 goes down Saturday, May 17th, at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi.) Don’t worry, Bellator has clearly learned from their whole “plan a pay-per-view around two old guys and some fading UFC castoffs” phase. But are there enough intriguing, quality fights on this lineup to justify paying for a Bellator event? Let’s look over the fight card and determine for ourselves.

All nine of the fights for Bellator 120 — four Spike preliminaries, five main card contests — have been ranked solely by my interest in watching them. If you disagree, feel free to write some terrible things about me in the comments section. I look forward to ignoring them.

(Main Card) Lightweight Championship Bout: Eddie Alvarez (c) vs. Michael Chandler

I don’t think either fighter is even capable of a boring match, much less a boring match against each other. I could type paragraph after paragraph on how their first two encounters resulted in two of the greatest fights in our sport’s history, and how…oh why am I even trying to pretend that I’m not going to insert an Al Bundy GIF and move along to the next fight:

(Preliminary Card) Lightweight Tournament Final: Marcin Held vs. Patricky Pitbull

Must-See: ‘The Raid’ Director Gareth Evans Discusses His Top 5 Fight Scenes Ever

(Props: David Chen via FilmDrunk)

Gareth Evans is the badass Welsh writer/director behind The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2, two of the most insane, over-the-top, and entertaining action flicks released in the last decade. In this clip, Evans discusses his five favorite movie fight scenes, which have all influenced his work in one way or another. Short version: Evans loves him some Jackie Chan, and the mall battle from Police Story (skip to 7:05-10:53 in the video) might be Jackie’s masterpiece. Plus, the Roddy Piper vs. Keith David alley-fight scene from They Live makes an appearance, because how could it not?

Even if you haven’t seen The Raid movies, it’s fascinating to hear Evans break down these scenes from a filmmaker’s perspective. Check it out.

Phil Davis Trolled the Sh*t Out of Jon Jones During Yesterday’s UFC 172 Conference Call

(Via MMA H.E.A.T.)

We don’t normally listen to pre-event conference calls for a multitude of reasons, the most obvious being that we are only allowed to participate in them when using a fake name/publication (mine being Chip Chessworth of FistFighter.com). That these calls are typically chock-full of the same softball “sports journalism” questions and answers we’ve heard a thousand times over (and sound as if they were recorded on a potato) only solidifies our stance, but yesterday’s UFC 172 conference call proved to be a rare exception to the rule we established earlier in this sentence.

Jon Jones, Glover Teixeira, Phil Davis, and Anthony Johnson were on hand to answer questions ahead of their respective showdowns this weekend. Roughly five minutes into the call, the conversation shifted to the possibility of Jones moving up to heavyweight for a fight with Cain Velasquez as he had previously hinted at. When Jones stated that he was no longer interested in the fight because he had plenty of challenges left in his actual weight class, Davis used the opportunity to needle the shit out of the champion to hilarious effect.

We’ve cued you up to the first exchange above, but join us after the jump for the full transcription (via Bleacher Report) because like we said, shit was recorded on a potato.
