The UFC 177 Danavlog Asserts That Dana White Might Not Be Such a Sleazeball After All

Recently, UFC President Dana White was named the 8th biggest sleazeball in all of professional sports by GQ magazine, placing just behind War Machine and just ahead of Lance Armstrong. While we’ve had our barbs with The Baldfather in the past, even we think it might be a little much to lump him in with the likes of a woman-beating multiple felon and a steroid-abusing sociopath who built his entire empire on a throne of deceit and manipulation.

I mean, sure, DW may fly off the handle and do something detrimental to the sport every now and again, and he may treat any media member who has the balls to call him out for doing so like a hostile witness in a murder trial, but for the most part, he seems relatively harmless for a multi-millionaire in charge of (what was once) the world’s fastest growing sport, right guys? (*narrowly ducks beer bottle*)

Just take a look at the UFC 177 Danavlog — which grants us a behind-the-scenes look at the drama-filled evening of UFC 175 — if you don’t believe me. Whether he’s informing Matt Mitrione that his fight with Stefan Struve had been cancelled at the last minute, bitching out Joe Rogan for his infamous “f-up” during Ronda Rousey‘s post interview, or simply posing for photos with fans, White handles it all with the grace of someone who definitely wouldn’t drive a railroad spike through a dog’s head to intimidate a rival promoter, unlike some of his former peers.

Demian Maia Diagnosed With Bone Infection in Shoulder, Out Indefinitely

(A bone infection is one thing, but a case of nipple eyes? There’s no coming back from that.)

A fun fact about Demian Maia: In his 19 fight UFC career, the Jiu-Jitsu ace had *never* pulled out of a scheduled contest. Until last weekend, that is, when a bone bruise in his shoulder saw him replaced by Jordan Mein against Mike Pyle at Fight Night 49.

Unfortunately, it appears that Maia’s injury has developed into something much more serious, which has postponed his return to the octagon indefinitely. MMAFighting has the details:

[Maia] suffered a bone bruise in his shoulder while training, which later developed a staph infection. That staph infection has now led to a bone infection, which hospitalized the Brazilian welterweight this past week.

Maia’s manager Eduardo Alonso told UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani that Maia is being treated for osteomyelitis, a serious bone infection commonly caused by bacteria. Alfonso said that the infection is on Maia’s right clavicle bone, and will require a six-week antibiotics treatment through IVs, and then follow with a course orally.

As if that wasn’t bad enough already…

UFC Planning to Implement Random, Enhanced Drug Testing for All Fighters

(Until now, the UFC has mainly relied on the “screenshot comparison” method.)

In the wake of some high-profile UFC drug-test failures for performance enhancers like HGH and EPO this year — as well as a resurgence in positive tests for old-school steroids — the UFC has announced plans to implement random, out-of-competition drug testing for all of its fighters. ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto broke the news last night.

Until now, UFC brass has claimed that the expense of such a program would be prohibitive, and the promotion has left much of the drug-testing responsibility in the hands of local athletic commissions, only supporting random testing on an occasional basis. But with the PED epidemic growing worse in MMA, the sport’s leading promotion will be making the financial investment necessary to combat the problem, and UFC officials hope to have the new drug-screening system in place by the end of the year. From the ESPN report:

According to UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner, the promotion is in discussion with “four to five” independent drug-testing agencies and is hopeful to officially partner with one by the end of 2014.

The end goal is unannounced, year-round blood and urine tests on the UFC’s stable of approximately 500 athletes using an independent sample collector.

“We are meeting with different companies right now and we’re going to have out-of-competition testing,” Ratner told ESPN.com. “We’re not sure when it’s going to start, but we’re working on it right now.

“Unannounced blood and urine is going to happen, hopefully in the next three or four months. When you’re talking about 500 fighters, there are a lot of logistics. Having fighters in foreign countries makes it tougher, but we’re coming up with a plan and (agencies) are making proposals to us in the next two weeks”…

Jose Aldo Admits That He Shoved Chad Mendes Just to Hype Their Fight [NO DOY]

(“Okay, forget the shoving thing, I’ve got a better way to promote us. Have you ever seen the music videos of this man Weird Al?” / Photo by Leandro Lima)

In a regrettable instance of an MMA fighter breaking kayfabe, UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo went on record yesterday saying that his unsolicited shove of Chad Mendes earlier this week was only done to hype their fight. I know, I know…ShockedJohnCena.gif.

Here’s what Aldo said to local media (via MMAFighting), following a faceoff with Mendes in Sao Paulo on Wednesday that did not result in shoving:

We were talking to Andre (Pederneiras) in a meeting about how we could improve our fight promotions. It’s part of the show. But I told Andre after (the staredown) that it’s not my style,” Aldo said. “It was not staged, we were talking (trash) to each other and it happened. … We (Aldo and Pederneiras) tried to spice things up, but that’s it…

I’ve never pushed anyone during a staredown before,” he said. “I should behave better. I’m not saying I regret it. We did it, it was good. There was a good thing about it that people are now talking about it, but it’s not who I am. It won’t happen again.”

Paige VanZant vs. Kailin Curran Reshuffled to Fight Night Austin, Which Also Gets Joseph Benavidez vs. Dustin Ortiz

(Photo via Getty.)

Although they were originally scheduled to throw down at Fight Night Halifax in October, it appears that the spine injury Paige VanZant recently suffered will in fact delay her long-awaited UFC debut against fellow stunner Kailin Curran.

Instead, “12 Gauge” and “Punkie Bruise-ter” (our tentative nickname for Curran) will now square off at Fight Night 57, which goes down on November 22nd from the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. This is normally the part of the article where we’d start listing Van Zant and Curran’s relevant/recent wins, but with a *combined* record of 6-1 and their only notable opponent being Tecia Torres (who defeated VanZant via UD at Invicta 4), let’s just skip the formalities, shall we?

Also joining Fight Night 57 will be a flyweight clash between Joseph Benavidez and Dustin Ortiz. After being KO’d by Demetrious Johnson in their rematch at UFC on FOX 9, Benavidez bounced back in style at UFC 172, submitting Tim Elliott with a guillotine so vicious that it forced him to tap with his feet. Ortiz, on the other hand, has made it two in a row since being outworked by John Moraga at Fight Night 35, notching split decisions over Ray Borg and highly-touted prospect Justin Scoggins in back-to-back appearances.

After the jump: Kailin Curran kicks the shit out of two interns on The Jason Ellis show. You know, for science.

Hot Potato: 20 Photos of Christine Hallauer, One FC Ring Girl

The fact that we’ve never done a Hot Potato gallery on Christine Hallauer is a cruel injustice. But as Babes of MMA reminds us, the strikingly gorgeous ONE FC ring girl will be back in action this coming Friday at ONE FC: Reign of Champions in Dubai, and that’s reason enough to show you a bunch of her photos today.

Christine is a Swiss-Filipina model from Perth, Australia, who has appeared on magazine covers for FHM‘s Singapore, Malaysia, and Philippines editions, as well as Men’s Health Singapore and Muse. According to her bio, she earned a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University in Western Australia, and “When she’s not appearing before a camera or introducing MMA fights to eager crowds, she’s working in the oil and gas industry in Australia—reaping the rewards of her academically focused career.” Basically, she’s the Shane Carwin of MMA ring girls.

Stephan Bonnar Comes Out of Retirement to Sign With Bellator, Fight Against Tito Ortiz Likely

(Photo via MMAWeekly)

Back in October 2012, Stephan Bonnar announced his retirement from MMA following his TKO loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 153. Then, he tested positive for steroids. Then, he was somehow inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame — an unexpectedly positive end to a mostly-respectable career.

Except it wasn’t the end. According to a report from Ariel Helwani, Bonnar has signed a multi-fight contract with Bellator, and may also do some broadcasting work for the promotion on Spike TV. Bonnar’s debut date and opponent haven’t been revealed yet, but the rumor is that he’ll be fighting fellow UFC HoF’er Tito Ortiz, and he’s already angling for the match:

“I want everyone to know I’m coming out of retirement because it’s time to free the MMA world of the virus that’s known as Tito Ortiz,” Bonnar said in a statement provided by Bellator. “We’ve been suffering through his boring fights for too many years, and it’s about time that someone beats it out of him once and for all.”

In response, Ortiz promised to beat the juice out of him, and called him a #BitchBoy. Strong words, indeed.

Just four months ago, Bonnar told BloodyElbow that he wouldn’t fight for any other promotion besides the UFC, and that he’s currently enjoying his new life as a day-trader. (“It’s about loyalty,” Bonnar said. “More than anything, I take pride in being a part of the UFC and I wouldn’t want to screw that up.”) Well, loyalty only goes so far when Spikeforce is dangling a huge paycheck in front of you.

Bellator CEO Scott Coker had this to say about the Bonnar signing:

UFC 180 in Mexico Adds Dennis Bermudez vs. Ricardo Lamas, Diego Sanchez vs. Norman Parke + More

(Sanchez racks up some serious “Octagon control” points at UFC Fight Night 42 in June. / Photo via Getty)

UFC 180: Velasquez vs. Werdum (November 15th, Mexico City) is steadily adding an impressive lineup of Hispanic talent. The latest bookings on the PPV card include…

- Dennis Bermudez vs. Ricardo Lamas: Bermudez has won seven straight fights since becoming a finalist on TUF 14 — the longest win streak in UFC featherweight history. Coming off Performance of the Night-earning victories against Jimy Hettes and Clay Guida this year, Bermudez could clinch a title shot with a victory against Lamas, the former title challenger who bounced back to the win column with a decision over Hacran Dias in June. (Hispanic credentials: Bermudez is Puerto Rican-American; Lamas is half-Cuban, half-Mexican.)

- Diego Sanchez vs. Norman Parke: You know Sanchez as the old-school warrior who won his last fight against Ross Pearson via judges’ robbery, and hasn’t finished a fight in over six years. He’s already #4 on the significant strikes absorbed leaderboard, and will look to improve his position against Parke, the TUF Smashes lightweight winner who has yet to lose a fight in the Octagon, and most recently TKO’d Naoyuki Kotani in Dublin last month. (Hispanic credentials: Sanchez is Mexican-American, Parke is a white dude from Northern Ireland.)

Gross Video of the Day: Amateur MMA Fighter Loses Match via Sudden Vomiting

(Props: oofights via MMAJunkie)

On Saturday night in Washington D.C., OO Fights 32 produced the nastiest episode of in-cage barfing since the legendary lutador vomitando.

The video above was shot during the amateur featherweight title bout between Pete Petties and Jeff Melvin. Shortly after taking a solid kick to the body, Melvin doubles over and starts spewing. The fight is immediately waved off, despite Melvin’s apparent willingness to keep fighting.

Then, some dude with a pony tail and cargo shorts comes out and starts mopping up the mess, probably cursing himself for dropping out of business school. But hey, nobody said this MMA business was glamorous.

[VIDEO] Jose Aldo Shoves Chad Mendes at the UFC 179 Media Day

(via MMAFighting.)

In a move nobody could have possibly seen coming (nobody I tells ya!), Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes got a little physical at today’s UFC 179 media day. More specifically, Aldo shoved Mendes after the two exchanged some words (I can’t be certain, but I’m pretty sure Mendes told Aldo he was going to “f*ck him up”). To reiterate: There is absolutely *no way* this was staged or pre-rehearsed, so all you conspiracy theorists can just stuff it.

Seriously though, how hilarious would it be if the UFC regularly started staging confrontations to sell PPV’s? The Jones-Cormier scuffle earned them a spot on Sportscenter and easily a couple hundred (thousand) more PPV buys, so the potential is obviously there. Aldo’s hype and status as a PPV draw is ever-dwindling, so what better opportunity to play up the grudge angle? The format is simple: Have both guys talk some smack on Twitter, get in a controlled scuffle at media day, and I dunno, maybe have Mendes take a steel chair to Aldo’s back at the weigh-ins. I know what you’re thinking…

…and you’re right, but don’t call me Jerry.

THIS JUST IN: Jose Aldo breaks leg, UFC 179 cancelled (not really, but it’ll probably happen soon.)

-J. Jones
