According to a new LA Times report, a heavyweight superfight between former UFC champion Brock Lesnar and former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem has been booked to headline the UFC’s end-of-year show, December 30th in Las Vegas. The winner of the five-round feature will likely be the next in line to challenge for the UFC heavyweight title against the winner of Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos.
Overeem reportedly finalized his contract with the UFC earlier today. As he told the Times: ”Brock is a big name, a dangerous guy, and this is a dream matchup. Brock’s a big guy, an exciting wrestler with his takedowns. I want to see this fight myself. Overall, I’m a different fighter. A striker, athletic, big. These are going to be two big trucks going at it on a collision course.”
Added Lorenzo Fertitta: “Our thinking when we bought Strikeforce was to give fans the fights they want. Obviously, Alistair’s one of the best heavyweights in the world, but he also has that ‘it’ factor — the tremendous look, he’s huge. It’s a star factor.”
Overeem is coming off his decision win over Fabricio Werdum in June, while Lesnar has been inactive since his October 2010 TKO loss to Velasquez, due to the return of his diverticulitis.
The monster booking gives new perspective to Overeem’s recent Strikeforce “firing.” Was Zuffa angling to transfer him to their premier promotion all along? At any rate, he’s finally where he belongs, and we’re psyched to see what becomes of it. If you’ve got predictions for Lesnar vs. Overeem, let’s hear ‘em…
Update #1, via @arielhelwani: “According to @danawhite, the Overeem-Brock fight is on Friday because Saturday is New Year’s Eve.” Hmm, could this suggest a broadcast on FOX?

commentsIt's a tough fight for lesnar coming back after beating his terrible illness. I think he will be in outstanding shape and highly motivated. Most of you presume he will just take it to the ground and grind out a win straight away.I don't think he will. I think we will see the best stand up from lesnar yet. I know you all laugh but I'm serious. I think he will push up against the fence, do some dirty boxing, throw some knees and then go for a take down. I think lesnar can pull this off provided he is cautious withe overeems standby and rightfully so. Other thing that worries me is if lesnar shoots for a takedown but gets a knee for his troubles. I'll officially call it - lesnar wins via sub (same as carwin) in round 3.
(Either that or lesnar wins in round 1 with the "anderson silva front kick" )
Lets just enjoy seeing lesnar back in the ring and being healthy shall we.
Really Dana? really? UFC is now gonna do freakshow fights? It hasn't been embarrassing enough to have a marble mouthed fatass has been boxer on your show? Or an internet thug on your TUF show?
really? fucking REALLY? Goddamn it is so hard to prop MMA as a legit sport doing this silly fucking shit.
ok ....fuck it, go hire Bautista and have him fight Hershel Walker.
whats that shit mean? dont break your keyboard tuff guy, learn how to talk or stfu
"James Toney probably hits harder then anybody in the UFC and how long did it take for him to get exposed, Its not called who can hit harder, its called MMA"
Jesus Christ.
Lenser will leave MMA for good!
Overeem will never be UFC Champion!
But will be a good gate keeper for top 3 heavy weights to test there stand up skills.
You heard it here first!
