Alistair Overeem’s Next K-1 Opponent: Ewerton Teixeira

(Teixeira vs. Fujimoto, 4/13/08)

Though Alistair Overeem would have us believe that he’d much rather be doing MMA than all this K-1 stuff, he goes at it with the big gloves again this weekend in the quarterfinals of the K-1 World Grand Prix.  His opponent this time is Brazilian Kyokushin karate badass Ewerton Teixeira.  The scouting report on Teixeira is that he’s technically sound, doesn’t make many mistakes, but also doesn’t blow anyone away with his aggressive assaults.  If you wanted to be the kind of jerk who stereotypes these karate dudes, you might even call him ‘elusive,’ though ‘plodding’ might be more accurate.  He’s only finished two of his ten K-1 bouts, but he’s also only lost one.

At 6’2" and 240 pounds, he’s going to be giving up a little bit of size to the 6’5", 250+ pound mountain of muscle that Overeem has become.  Is it possible that he might be patient enough to weather Overeem’s storm and send him back home to MMA without a K-1 World GP crown?  Maybe, but Overeem is a considerable favorite at the moment.  Chances are he’ll cruise through this one and into the semis.

See more of Teixeira, including a strangely entertaining karate highlight, after the jump.

@steampunk2 tough part about guys from the K-1/kickboxing in general world transitioning into mma is moving from the big gloves to the small ones. Especially guys like Teixeira who come from a Kyokushin Karate background...they go their whole life learning the bad habit of keeping their hands low to block kicks because in Kyokushin no punches to the head are aloud. Guys like Feitosa and Teixeira are part of a rare bunch who can even transition into full contact kickboxing.

I wanna see Barnett and Overeem in a No substances banned super-uber-heavywieght throwdown from Japan...

Everton was perfectly mediocre last time I saw him. Guess it makes sense though since overeem is indeed mediocre himself despite the hype that says otherwise.

Overeem will never beat a legitimate MMA heavyweight.
(Sans them falling and wrenching their own shoulder out of socket first of course).

Not allowing punching to the face is deffinately one way to improve your head kicks it reminds me of that time i blindfolded my self so i could heighten my other senses like that bad ass from sneakers. if only i could of made it longer than 2 minutes, i'd have ninja senses.

That guy is pretty badass actually, I can't help but think he would be way better suited to MMA than the K-1 circuit though. With the resurgence of Karate in MMA maybe we will see this happen sooner rather than later. Unless he works over Overeem, but that wouldnt be the worst way to springboard into an MMA career even if that win came in K-1.

Also, the highlight video is pretty cool. One of my favorite, and considerably under represented (atleast in the UFC) strikes is showcased a few times; The Straight Kick. I fucking LOVE that shit, a full on kick to the sternum, sending whoever tumbling over ass backwards, usually feeling pretty winded. You rarely see that these days and everytime I see it I can't help but think, why aren't more guys using this strike? Its not like its easier to catch than an outside kick or anything, I would think arguably more difficult. Anyways, nice to see.

Mark my words Machida is gonna straight kick Rua right in the gut and double him over. Assuming neither one comes down with flesh eating disease in the next 4 months.

I'm surprised they let that Teixeira lady fight without a shirt on.
