[UPDATED] And Now He’s Fired: Miguel Torres Cut by UFC After One Rape Joke Too Many

Update: Torres has released a statement about his release. Check it out at the bottom of this post.

Miguel Torres — former undisputed WEC bantamweight champion and die-hard fan of rape jokes — has been released by the UFC. Dana White confirmed the firing yesterday evening, telling, “his career with us now is over.”

The reason for Torres’s release was a tweet that reportedly read, “If a rape van was called a surprise van, more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises.” Torres later removed the tweet and replaced it with an edited version. White was informed of the tweet second-hand by Michael Landsberg and made the decision to fire Torres shortly after.

So why is Torres being made an example of, when Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans made similar off-color statements recently? Basically, it’s because he didn’t have a good enough explanation.

As Dana White tells Ariel Helwani in a video interview released last night, Griffin explained to him that his “rape is the new missionary” tweet was intended to be a commentary on the prevalence of sex crime coverage on television, while Rashad’s Jerry Sandusky reference was an attempted dig at Phil Davis’s alma mater gone too far. (Dana claims he couldn’t hear the line during the press conference because the microphones were going in and out, though he laughed anyways.)

The problem with Torres’s “rape van” tweet was that it had no other purpose, context, or explanation, other than allegedly being a quote from either It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Workaholics. Said Dana: “That’s not a funny joke to me. That’s just not something you tweet. If that’s your sense of humor, keep it at home around you and your buddies and keep it to yourself. It’s not something that you put out on twitter. And there’s no explanation for it. I can’t make any sense of it. And enough is enough. When you’re getting ready to twitter, or you’re getting ready to say something, think about what you’re gonna say, think about what you’re gonna tweet, and use a little common sense…that tweet makes no sense, and the fact that you say it was a joke bothers me even more.”

White goes on to explain that this is the first thing that Miguel Torres has done to offend him — he considers Torres a good guy and a great champion otherwise — and he would have been fired even if this situation didn’t occur on the heels of the Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans controversies. (For the record, Rashad won’t receive any punishment for his own tasteless joke.)

Torres isn’t the first fighter to be fired by the UFC due to an Internet posting. I mean shit, we were just talking about War Machine. But now that every other UFC fighter is trying to be a part-time comedian in order to nab a Twitter performance bonus, a new message needed to be sent: Use your head, because the world is watching.

Torres’s official response, via MiguelTorresMMA:

I have a lot to be thankful for in my life, I have my beautiful wife and daughter, my family, my health, my gym, and in terms of my career, I succeeded to the biggest stage in the sport of mixed martial arts, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. I am very sorry for upsetting my bosses at the UFC, and also to my fans and everyone else who was upset by the language in my tweets. I understand it was wrong, and I meant no harm or disrespect. Given the chance, I will do whatever it takes to make things right. I am going to learn from this. I think life throws you opportunities that can make you a better person, and so that’s what I’m going to do here. That is how I am going to react. I am going to use this to improve myself, and I hope that my fans will continue to support me.”

XENOPHON- December 9, 2011 at 1:01 pm
How can a junior employee (Torres) be held more responsible, then two of promotions former champions? Or the same promotions CEO?
Who is siding with the managements decision to fire Torres? Not me, its you - you pudgy brunette!
Meagan_Kills - you obviously have no clue how a settlement can be structured when an employee is singled out. Many people win large awards (cash) and have their job offered or re-instated.
Best guess is that Zuffa forces its fighters to sign a mediation / arbitration clause. This gives the Zuffa shareholders massive advantage over the fighters.
One it allows them to dictate the place of arbitration. If Zuffa has its HQ in Vegas, and a fighter lives in Boston its awefull expesive to fly you, your attorney, and any support required across the country and pay for lodgings to attend a hearing.
2nd, Zuffa's clause would allow almost 100% allow for them to locate and chose a mediator/arbitrator. This means that Zuffa can stack the deck with a judge of sorts who is sypmathetic to their own interests, not those of the fighter (employee).
Lastly, forcing a bright start with twinkles of the big time in their eyes, to sign an arbitration/mediation clause means that the outcome is binding. In essence, the fighter (in this case Torres) gives up his rights to a jury trial.
Jury trials pose more of a risk to a employer (Zuffa) as they award far larger amounts for damages. Also, once convicted by a jury - appeals to the corporation are less likely to take place.
In this case, Torres would prevail. As he should.
So Drano, why is it that most all the smart people here understand this, even if not in the details - but you fail?
You dumb bitch, I am surely going to slap the shit out of you now. And this time if Karma or FFB pop tall, their going to get the same. (GRIN)

Why do you go back to your Deviant Art postings, go practice your hair removal (try to remove the hair from your taint) or get this months issue of Vogue and stay the fuck off a website primarily for men.
Does anyone want to take a bet? Is Drano a woman, if so does she have friends that either post here, or work as a writer for CP?
Is Drano either a man, or an alias for one of the many CP writers here.
Is the bitch(male or female) working for Zuffa as a paid fluffer?

Dana White is assclown, he's the one that told all the fighters to get on twitter in the first place. and miguel torres is a dumbfuck for putting shit like that out in public.
seriously why the fuck would you want to tweet anything. or post something on a wall.
dont these assholes read the news, how many employs get fired for tweeting stuff that makes there company look bad.
all dana had to do was have the ufc email all the fighters and tell them to stfu or face termination after the griffin episode. and everything would be fine.
Torres is just a dumbfuck trying to push peoples buttons
edhedicus- December 9, 2011 at 11:54 am
How much money has Dana made off of Miguel Torres? Think it is even 1% of how much he has made off of Forrest and Rahsad? Dollars and cents, not common sense run the UFC. And I am okay with that....

Buster Hyman- December 9, 2011 at 11:44 am
my fellow cp mates, i apologize for my rape joke. i was just quoting my favorite show wings, or wait was it from three's know what i'll have to look that up but moving on... despite the fact that many of the other posters here have made some off color remarks, it seems because of my skin color (extremely white) and the fact that i have never won a free cp shirt or had my questions answered by washed up brawlers and porn stars, that my jokes can not be tolerated. so in response to the public backlash i have received for making light of forced sex on women, men, animals, inanimate objects, various foods... i want to give my sincerest apologies....

or just tell you all what i would tell dana white;

lighten the fuck up you hypocritical cunt before i start telling dead baby jew jokes at your nephews barmitzva
Buster Hyman- December 9, 2011 at 11:37 am
uh oh, just got a text from CP, looks like i gotta apologize or im cut from the site....what to do....

Sure sounds like “fluffa-kills” is once again siding with the interests of ZUFFA.
Someone needs to short circuit the wiring on her hair removal machine, cause the fact is if drano cant kill, amperage-kills.

Yeah smart people do tend to side with the side that makes the most sense. Might makes right bitch. Unlike you and others I don't live in a pipe dream, I understand what the world is really all about. Now your little funny bullshit about lawsuits and all that was some damn funny science fiction, but the REALITY of it is, that stupidity will never happen, nor would Torres win his job back. there is no law in the land that will protect Torres over zuffa and Dana White, you are mentally fucked up person "sheena", your dreamworld bullshit doesn't fly out here in the real world.
Oh and BTW if you don't believe drano will kill, I invite you to go take a real big swig, and give me an early Christmas present by dying. And hey maybe you can sue me or the Drano company for it killing you......stupid fag.
SnackDaddy- December 9, 2011 at 11:10 am
this is fucked up, that's what it is. dana's probably trying to paint ufc as a very vanilla organization to fox, which is not going to work. that's not their target market. and for once i agree with xeno, torres probably has a pretty sound case of employee discrimination.
macreadysshack- December 9, 2011 at 10:47 am
Sorry this isn't Norway, land of fjords, oil and candy-canes. This is America where shit aint fair but you deal.

Can I come live with you?

The joke isn't acceptable in the least and certainly deserves scorn, but in dishing out punishment for acts and statements, I think White should weigh how much exposure the general public has had to the act or statement in question. All of my friends who are sports fans but not necessarily MMA fans know Chuck Liddell appeared on some talk show intoxicated, that UFC guy who wears a chain and howls went postal in his pickup truck, some wrestler from Oregon pled guilty in federal court to fraud charges and simultaneously lied to the athletic commission, etc. Yet how many members of the general public would have known of Torres' comment on Twitter if not for the news generated by his firing? If White's logic is to fire guys for statements and acts that publicly embarrass the UFC as an organization, then some weight must be given to the amount public exposure - otherwise you end up firing guys for a few inappropriate remarks that only a few diehard MMA fans are aware of while ignoring things that most guys who watch ESPN are aware of and that more adversely affect the public image and perception of the UFC.

But the most ironic tweet of his:

The past will always come back and haunt you, some things just can't be taken back.

And one could argue he was just asking to get some heat for his comments. His tweets below showed he knew he was pushing limits:

To Twitter & Facebook Police- Santa Clause isn't real, some people think cucumbers taste better pickled, & OJ did that shit. #surprise

Dana's decision probably had something to do with Forrest and Rashad making one dumb comment in the heat of the moment. Miguel repeatedly posted rape comments/jokes:

MiguelTorresMMA Miguel Angel Torres
Do not watch this video, it is not funny or this one 24million people can't be wrong.

This is probably a result of the influence of Fox.
Still don't understand why they expect fighters to behave themselves.
Their job is to do shit that is against the law outside the cage or gym.
As long as they don't break the law, leave them the fuck alone. Rape jokes or not.
I wanna see him fight. I don't give a fuck about his jokes.
Kid Clam Curtains- December 9, 2011 at 10:29 am
Dana is probably worried about taking heat for all of the stupid comments his fighters have been making and had to make a sacrificial lamb. Especially with the Fox deal about to begin. Mainstream media (especially from competing networks) could really make a shitstorm out of it if they can make it look like a trend with UFC on Fox fighters. Dana sure as fuck wasn't going to fire Forrest or Rashad. Now if anybody points out the stupid shit the fighters have been saying, Dana can point out that he fires people for making offensive comments. Bad timing, Torres. Should have just tweeted a gaping asshole joke or something.
jizzninja- December 9, 2011 at 10:24 am
i refuse to watch tuf, that shit is a fucking joke. imagine if the nfl or mlb had a reality show. a reality show is the quickest way to kill somethings integrity
