Anderson Silva Chooses Elbow Surgery Over Middleweight Rematches

(If Dan had only faked an injury, it would have been a totally different story.)

After Nate Marquardt‘s brutal knockout of Demian Maia at UFC 102, Anderson Silva was faced with the possibility of having to rematch both Marquardt and Dan Henderson in title defenses — not exactly the fresh challenges that Silva wanted to focus on during the remaining fights of his career. Silva’s manager Ed Soares suggested that Marquardt and Henderson fight each other to establish a true #1 middleweight contender, and Dan Henderson suggested that Ed Soares get stuffed. Well, the Spider has found a solution to the middleweight contender problem, as he’s decided to undergo elbow surgery and will sit out the rest of the year.

So, unless Henderson wants to accumulate some nice ring-rust — and wait until the spring to get paid again — he’ll probably have to take the fight against Marquardt. (See? Just because Ed and Anderson speak that bizarre foreign language, it doesn’t mean they’re not clever.) If you’re Dana White, your first reaction to this elbow-surgery news is probably "Silva, you cocksucker." Your second reaction is to realize that UFC 105 still lacks a main event, and Henderson vs. Marquardt is probably as good a matchup as you’re going to get at this point.

I guess Anderson is just another fucking liar, since he said he wanted to fight before 2009 ended and retire at the end of it.
ReDx- September 7, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Nate had 2 points taken away during the fight and only lost by split decision. That should tell you he was obviously dominating Leites, just got unlucky with the illegal strikes.

@ sexyamas Orange Coat...

Don't forget Marquardt LOST a split decision to Leites....

If Fedor done this it would be classed as ducking Hendo or Nate but with Anderson he will get praised.

Lets be honest he is crapping himself at the prospect of Marquart he has improved tenfolds since the first fight and looks bigger too Nate fucked Maia in 20 seconds and Gouveia the alleged most talented fighter a ATT pretty easily.
Silva & Soars are more interested in enhancing his record hence the reason they have fought average MW (Cote & Leites) and a glass jawed over achievers.

Fight Anderson man i know your ducking Sexyama you have been for years but Nate or Dan are no Sexyama fight them man.

Of course Lyoto vs. Anderson is a dream matchup, but anyone at 205 would honestly get smashed by Anderson excluding Machida. 185 presents two rematches with Marquardt and Hendo, but seeing how Anderson really is levels above his opponents, both matches would end up with the W for Silva, again. Hendo vs Marquardt will be nice though. But I dont find too much joy in seeing people get destroyed more than once by the same guy, so it sucks Hendo and Marquardt are the only legit middle weight contenders.
ithertz- September 6, 2009 at 9:08 pm
i'd love to see him fight lyoto of course, other than that idk...maybe rampage or rashad, but if anderson decided to take it to the ground either of those guys would be screwed.
Bovice- September 6, 2009 at 7:33 pm

Who would you want to see Silva fight?
ithertz- September 6, 2009 at 6:14 pm
i would love to see anderson fight someone GOOD at 205...ya know?... not someone on methadone (irvin) or with a style that guaranteed silva would knock him out in the first (forrest)
Clintourious- September 6, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Has Fedor been talking to Silva? jk.

But I would love to be in that room. Sans translater.

I like an interim belt this gives the fans a 5 round fight and if silva doesn't come back we have a middleweight champ. No matter what I like all these fighters and will be excited to watch them fight at any weight class at anytime.
I do think for Silva there is not much reward to beating them again and he sees more chance for him at 205 to make a legacy for himself. I'd even love to see him fight at HW but he wouldn't be able to compete against the 265 lb class but to see him pretty much come in at his street weight and fight would be interesting. Silva vs Silva once Wanderlei's face heals.
Hendo is great, and I loved seeing him defeat Bisping but I don't see him competing at a high level for much longer. Much of that Bisping fight he looked in trouble and like he was much relying on that right hand, luckily it worked because of a terrible game plan by Bisping. I want to see Hendo keep fighting I don't think he is going to get tons worse, I see him like a Randy fighting forever.
Nate looks better and better and his last fight pretty much shows his game plan, and power. What would have happened had the fight gone longer? I guess it doesn't matter but I would have loved to see his game plan against that BJJ.

Hendo doesn't have to fight Marquardt... He can go take a fight at 205 while he waits...
Nut Puncher 9000- September 6, 2009 at 12:47 pm
It was almost as if they planned it this way. Anderson goes into surgery giving the UFC a reason to have Marq and Hendo fight five for an Interim Belt.

WWF style. Is this scripted or what?
831 Son- September 6, 2009 at 11:48 am
Good. There shouldn't have even been a thought that Hendo or Marquardt deserve a title shot before they face eachother. Anderson smashed them both. But it sucks not seeing The Spider fight until early next year.
Takun- September 6, 2009 at 9:56 am
Well if they all go down like Bisping it will only boost PPV buys...."HENDO, PUNCHING THE QUEEN'S CUNT" live on PPV.....
ReDx- September 6, 2009 at 9:32 am
Hendo wouldn't come back from 105 alive. After what he did to their golden boy, I'd expect nothing less than a hooligan riot of Brits trying to get to the cage to detach Hendos limbs.
spikeacosta- September 6, 2009 at 8:41 am
marquardt and hendo vs silva at the same time...
clutchy hopkins- September 6, 2009 at 7:48 am
i was talking about belfort fighting silva the other day. if he was on his game he could hand it to him for sure in quite the fashion. someone said marquardt has a better chance on a rematch than henderson?? that is silly silly silly. either way, fuck silva being the almighty dude to fight, they both deserve to fight him again, so set the matches up. fuck what him and his manager think, i wanna see title fights. fuck it, strip him of his belt let him move up a class and have henderson and marquardt fight for the vacant title. i dont care what happens i just wanna see some scraps.
RickyRobbie- September 6, 2009 at 7:32 am
Well done Anderson..Smart move.
for the love of mma- September 6, 2009 at 7:25 am
anderson is bored with middleweight so if marquart and hendo get it on then the loser goes to the bottom of the list again and silva only has to fight one and look for his mega fights at 205 i hope dana pits him against machida out of spite for acting like the boss
Joedirt- September 6, 2009 at 5:31 am
BigBear... ya I would rather see GSP too.. I just figure that fight wont happen. The reason I'd like to see Belfort is because of his boxing skills, it would be interesting to see somebody who could throw the hands better with silva.
BigBear145- September 6, 2009 at 5:27 am
hahaha belfort.... the man who lost to hendo, chuck, and randy. it would be a waste of one of silva's last fights.

I want to see GSP (the man who always talks about his legacy) fight silva
rh- September 6, 2009 at 5:22 am
I'll believe the surgery when I get confirmed med reports.

I think Soares and Silva are ducking the uneven risk v. reward of facing either fighter again.

Joedirt- September 6, 2009 at 5:16 am
This may sound crazy but I'd like to see Belfort and Silva meet somewhere in weight and go at it.
Marcer- September 6, 2009 at 4:55 am
Oh, how convenient. I expect pics to emerge midway through October of Anderson hitting the heavy-bag with no cast on.

But seriously, good. As much as I love Hendo, he's never going to beat Silva. Marquardt at least has a stylistic chance, but I'd rather see Andy fight at 205 until he retires. The remaining contracted Anderson Silva fights are worth their weight in cocaine-coated diamonds.
