Anderson Silva Responds to UFC Fine, Says He Did Not Know of Media Obligations

(Well, I guess it’s back to the dollar menu for a while.)

Anderson Silva was recently fined $50,000 for missing what the UFC described as a day of media obligations in Los Angeles to promote his July UFC 162 middleweight title defense against Chris Weidman. A pissed-off Dana White said of Silva, “Everybody wants more money, more money, more money, but nobody wants to sell the fight or go out and talk to the media. Talking to the media is part of your job, whether you like it or not.”

Had Silva really turned the corner from giving his usual reluctant, terse (if occasionally clever) answers to press and gone Full Diaz — skipping media events entirely with both middle fingers in the air? According to the champ, no. Although his response to getting punished by the organization was quite Diazian. In short: Bro, Anderson totally didn’t even know about these appointments. And, besides, his job is to train and fight, not talk.

“I’ve never missed any commitment to the UFC. I would never have made the trip to Brazil if I knew I had to be in Los Angeles,” Silva said, according to a translation by Sherdog of an interview given to Brazilian outlet, Veja.

“Everyone knows that I always block my media schedule to devote myself to training, since that’s my main priority. I’m an athlete, and my focus will always be to train and be prepared for the challenges.”

What do you think, ‘Taters? Could it be possible that Anderson really wasn’t made aware of his media obligations? He’s always made those commitments in the past, so why stop now?

Wait a minute…what has MMA manager to the stars Cesar Gracie been up to the last month or so? Maybe he’s replaced Nate Diaz with a brand-new new client. Nothing says “Gracie-managed fighter” like screwing up basic logistics and responsibilities, and making goofy explanations afterwards.

"I didn't know" is not that much of an excuse when you get the level of fame that Silva has. I think I will use that sometime.. "I didn't know." I wonder if it will work for me.

50000? What do you think the real cost is for an international media day with a fighter?
How many media outlets will expense sending their people to these when its a question mark on if the fighter will even be there?

To be fair, Silva could have thought he was supposed to have an average day:

I still can't get over the fact that BK is serving Pepsi products in a can! Must be some Brazilian thing. Either they don't like Coke or they really do serve Pepsi in a can.
