Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Andrei Arlovski to Earn Over $1 Million for “Day of Reckoning”

We were all a little shocked when Affliction’s impressively bloated salaries were made public following their "Banned" show last July. But the word on the street was that the super-high payouts were more of a publicity stunt than a part of the actual business model, and several fighters were reportedly asked to take pay cuts for their next Affliction appearance. Well, it looks like at least one "Day of Reckoning" fighter will be taking in considerably more bread this time around. Yahoo! Sports has the scoop:

[Andrei] Arlovski’s contracted pay was $170,000 for his final UFC fight last March, where he stopped Jake O’Brien. Arlovski received $500,000 to win and a $250,000 winning bonus for his first bout with the new organization, his TKO of Ben Rothwell in July.
With escalator clauses in his contract, his fight in the main event of Affliction’s Saturday pay-per-view card at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., will pay him in excess of $1 million, a number confirmed by UFC officials, who had right of first refusal on Arlovski’s new contract.

Assuming Affliction keeps half of each $44.95 pay-per-view purchase, Arlovski would need to pull in nearly 44,500 buys himself this Saturday to justify a million-dollar salary. Tom Atencio was adamant that "Banned" drew over 100,000 buys, which is impressive for a non-UFC event, but when your total fighter payroll is over $3 million, you’re kind of effing yourself in the A, financially speaking. Plus, Donald Trump Jr. gets his cut whether Affliction turns a profit or not. And Affliction’s partners/underminers in Golden Boy have already sold 17,000 seats to the Shane Mosley vs. Antonio Margarito boxing match in L.A. on the same night as "Day of Reckoning," which should steal a lot of spectators and media attention from Affliction. And of course, many MMA fans will be saving their money for "UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" on January 31st.

So yeah, a million bucks sounds about right.

Does Boxing have a organization like UFC. I dont think so. The fighters should have managers and fight when called for like Boxing does. No need for all these groups such as UFC, Affliction, Pride, Elite. Let it be an open playing field where everyone in heavyweight find other heavyweights around the world and so on.

Wow we have a lively bunch today!

I like to squeeze Tom Attencios penis, especially if Tito Ortiz is stimulating the balls simultaneously

I really hope Affliction doesn't go under after this, and want to support this. Not that they are a particularly great org, but because I don't think it's a good thing if the UFC has a monopoly. If they do end up getting one, that's going to lead to fighter unions, and then shit is going to get crazy lame.

I am tempted to take Saturday off and just drive down to Anaheim. This fight is gonna be good.
Me- January 20, 2009 at 4:29 pm
Personally Im glad Pride and Elite are gone, and Affliction may be on the way. I'm a fan, and I want to see the best fight the best. They can't do that if they are scattered across multiple orginizations.

Is competition good for MMA? Yes, but in the cage, not out of it. Who is the competition for the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL? Those organizations are the best of their respective sports. The best atheletes play in those leagues and the rest want to be in those leagues because they are the at the top. And thats where the UFC wants to be.

I'm all for the lower level and local promotions, and guys working their way up to the top. But I want there to be one top organization so the fans can the the best fight the best, the dream matchups be made, and questions of who is the best get answered.

Yeah, Arlovski is worth $1m... and Jesus really was my son, and the guys who wrote the Bible were told to do so my me.

Fucking idiots.

sorry ufc but this card is gonna kick the shit outta last weeks ufc 93, should have given that piece out for free or added 5 more good fights.

Dana "lets try and spread 10 good fights over 8 ppv's"

Tom "lets put out the best fights we possicly can in one ppv card and pay our fighters really well"

how can you hate them?
nEw JeRsEy- NeW jErSeY- January 20, 2009 at 2:53 pm
That's nice. AA is a superstar, and is entitled to a good pay day.

There's no 401K's for fighters, they need to make it while they have the chance to.

Boxers make a butt load of money...why can't we have MMA superstars? Not for nothing, but Chuck Liddel should have been making 1 million a fight back when he was champ. The guy was a ridiculous draw and a superstar. UFC really F's their fighters with $$$.

@ Za

Colts Neck is a good place to pick up cougars. I know this for sure. Check out Mary Annes on 537 for the best pizza around.

I'm in the military and I'm currently stationed in Colts Neck, which is an hour away from NYC and like 10 minutes from the fucking shore.

So yes, I see those over tanned fucks a lot. FYI, I'm also Italian, but I'm not a fucking retard like most of these Gotti wannabes.

@The Za:
Sooo you spend allot of time in NJ or what? lol

"Guido: Check out this fuckin' t-shirt, it's got chains and skulls on it! I'm so fuckin' badass! Gimme two Jaigerbombs down here chief! I'm in the fuckin' zone!"
The Za- January 20, 2009 at 1:17 pm
What a bunch of idiots. Seriously, who decided that a bunch of t-shirt designers should start a fucking MMA promotion? Just because you put skulls and tribal writing on a fucking shirt doesn't mean you know dick about fight promotion, and apparently these dumb shit's can't do math either. Arlovski might be a big name to us in the MMA world, but not too many outsiders who are just becoming interested in the sport know who the fuck he is. There is not a name big enough in MMA to be worth a million dollars. Not Liddell, not Silva, and probably not even Fedor. All of my friends who aren't adamant MMA fans like myself have no fucking clue who anyone on the card is, so why the fuck would people like them buy it? I'm sure Affliction hasn't thought about the fact that they NEED the casual fan to become interested in their product because every fighter they have contracted is only a big name to the fanatic, not to mention that there are 3 ppv's this month, and most of us aren't going to shell out 120 dollars for fucking PPV's this month. God I hate Affliction. They had a great opportunity to actually create a product, and they fucked it up with ridiculous salaries, stupid fuck face VP's, and over hyping. The only thing good that can really come out of this is that the company itself has to fold and I won't have to see these dumb fuck Guido's wearing their t-shirts at the bars.

Guido: Check out this fuckin' t-shirt, it's got chains and skulls on it! I'm so fuckin' badass! Gimme two Jaigerbombs down here chief! I'm in the fuckin' zone!

i'd get beaten to a near death pulp for a cool mill too andre
DDT- January 20, 2009 at 12:41 pm
This will be Afflictions last event. They will pull out of the fight game shortly after the PPV buys come in (85,000). They will go groveling to the UFC and that will be that. Too bad Affliction, I would say good try but its really not even that. I will not miss you. Your first event blew donkey balls and although this one will probably be better I won't be paying to find out. Although I might be spotted at a local bar trying to catch the final fight.
Farthammer- January 20, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Love Affliction's fights and will buy this; but I hate the way they are running this into the ground.

I want viable competition for the UFC; it's healthy. Example A: Affliction shows up, and UFC puts on a show to counter it. We the fans get more choices and everyone wins.

Save your money guys for the UFC celebrity deathmatch on the 31st.
mayhem420- January 20, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Why do you people complain about fighters not making enough money?
If they dont like the money they make then go some place else. If there is nothing else then why blame the UFC? Its not like they caused Elite or Affliction to go under. Those orgs fucked it up all by them selves. If a fighter (Fedor) does not want to fight in the UFC cause he does not want to sign a contract then so what.
He did what was best for him and the org did or was trying to do what is best for them. Its about BOTH parties making money not just one or the other.
The reason why you see other sports stars making more is they are in a bigger market sport. How long has boxing been around? How about the NFL or NBA, MLB, NLH or even Nasscar. Give the UFC 10 more years if its still as popular then as it is now then maybe the fighters will be making more. Keep in mind that untill Zuffa took over the UFC was losing $$$ and no one was getting anything like they do now. Get over the pay scale thing, its not your paycheck so why get so pissed over it? I am sure we all have bettter things to get mad about.
iron helps us play- January 20, 2009 at 12:34 pm
thomas atencio says no live band.
probably a budget cut since arlovski's making a milli.
WarpedAcorn- January 20, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Now it makes sense...that contest to see what Arlovski was writing while watching Fedor spank Timmah had it all wrong. He was actually writing down all the cool things he was going to get with $1million. And maybe some quick math to see how fast he would have to lose to have the largest Pay-Per-Second (PPS) on record. It actually had nothing to do with "taste my pee-pee", it was in fact all about the PPS!
Olie- January 20, 2009 at 12:30 pm
The deserve this sort of money IMO.

TV deals + sponsorship will take in a lot of money.
Sodak- January 20, 2009 at 12:24 pm
bout time mma fighters get the money they deserve. now if all the ufc fanboys would realize theres good fighters and fights outside the UFC affliction could make some $ too.
Dynamite!!- January 20, 2009 at 12:23 pm
@ ob&i

oh yea, i remember hearing something about that too.
i'm hoping not though. not to knock ozzy or anything, i just think that a live musical performance takes away from the quality of the event. it's an mma event, not an mma event/concert. of course, this could just be me.
Old, Bald and Irish- January 20, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Hey "Dynamite!!"

I thought Ozzy was supposed to be playing this event?

A quick look at their site has no mention of Ozzy, though.
