Andrei Arlovski vs. Brett Rogers Added to ‘Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields’ (!)

("Pee-pee-pee" vs. "Wobble-Wobble": Who ya got!?)

Ho, baby. From a new press release sent out by Strikeforce:

ST. LOUIS (May 19, 2009) – SHOWTIME announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., announced today that top-10 ranked heavyweight and former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski will face unbeaten heavyweight sensation Brett "The Grim" Rogers on Saturday, June 6 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis and LIVE on SHOWTIME. The announcement was made at a kick-off press conference for STRIKEFORCE: Lawler vs. Shields at the Atrium at Scottrade Center. The heavyweight showdown will precede the main event fight between two of the most highly regarded fighters in the world, "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler and Jake Shields.

The Fight Network (via FiveOunces) passes along these additional details:

“The Pitbull,” who will be making his first appearance for the California-based Strikeforce promotion, was initially rumored to make his professional boxing debut in the aftermath of the loss to Emelianenko. But Arlovski is now set to return to his mixed martial arts roots against the less experienced Rogers. The winner of this fight will likely go on to challenge heavyweight kingpin [Alistair] Overeem for the title later this year.

The above report also mentioned that Rogers was originally supposed to take on Overeem at the event, but the Demolition Man had to pull out due to a hand injury. Crazy. On paper, Arlovski takes this one, obviously — but then again, Rogers’s fists are granite, and Arlovski’s chin is silly putty. We can’t wait to see what happens.

The addition of Arlovski/Rogers means that Strikeforce’s June 6th lineup is stacked as fuck. Here’s the confirmed main card that we’ll be seeing on Showtime:

182 lbs.: Robbie Lawler (16-4) vs. Jake Shields (22-4-1)
HW: Andrei Arlovski (15-6) vs. Brett Rogers (9-0)
180 lbs.: Nick Diaz (19-7) vs. Scott Smith (16-5)
WW: Phil Baroni (13-10) vs. Joe Riggs (29-10)
LHW: Kevin Randleman (17-12) vs. Mike Whitehead (23-7)

While Arlovski has a weak chin (they even left it in the UFC video game), he's going to steamroll Rogers with his speed and skill. He's just barely overrated. You can't deny his speed, hand speed, athletic ability. He's just got to wait for 2:30 in the first round when Rogers gasses and it's over.

This is just a way to have Arlovski have beaten a "top-ranked" fighter for Strikeforce so they have a bad ass card in the late summer with Overeem and Arlovski headlining.

And as soon as their contracts are up guess where they are going? Oh yeah, UFC.

Judo I'm Right, again you keep proving to be a moron with a horrible pun for a handle. You know what I know, you suck.

Very interesting match up, this card looks entertaining as all hell!

Does anyone else see the potential here for AA Vs Overeem for the Strikeforce HW title?

HUGE for Strikeforce if this comes together.

wow sick card cant wait.
John_Roger- May 19, 2009 at 6:53 pm
All the respect goes to Brett Rogers. Not to take anything away from brett, but AA is going to bring a big challenge to him. I believe he may shock all of you. Arlovski's boxing has came around quite a bit. I don't believe his chin can take a shot from Rogers.

You have to give Rogers credit where its due for taking this fight. Where is Kimbo?

Arlovski = overrated, Cathedron ... Judo Im Right

That's a damn good card for Strikeforce. I think this fight will be closer than most would believe. Rogers lacks technique, but he can take a lot of punishment and he throws hard. Arlovski is superior all around, but he can't afford to make many mistakes in this one. One wrong punch and he's done. Arlovski will dictate the fight since we know Rogers will want a slugfest.

Will Arlovski:

A) Play it safe (yet again)
B) Attempt his Fedor gameplan again and hope it works
C) Grapple

My vote is A with a smattering of B if Rogers gasses from chasing him.

Damn, this is a stacked card. NICE.

Looking forward to this one.

Arlovski is terribly over-rated and has been for a long time. Glass jaw, notoriously timid (ever since being knocked out by sylvia), overrated hands, claims to know sambo, but never uses any sort of throws.

He just looks bada$$ and has a cool mouthguard.

He'll probably "control the ring" by acting like he is gonna throw some sort of strikes then get KTFO again. Then everyone will claim fluke.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if Strikeforce would even add this fight to the this card. They'll probably use Arlovski's name, while they can, on another card instead of blowing their wod on one Showtime event.

Anyone know if there are any rumors for NBC? So, we can actually watch their events live somehow.

Arlovski glass chin hahahaha.
CagePotato nuthuggers hahahahah.
Not sure which was more funny.
Arlovski will get a tune-up fight before he takes on Overjuiced I mean Overeem.
The cards pretty stacked and not even a PPV.
ScrambledEggs- May 19, 2009 at 2:39 pm
This card is sick and "Swedish" calling CP nuthuggers for saying the truth that this card is stacked is ridiculous.
If you think this card is shitty you might want to get Dana Whites balls out of your mouth before you call someone a nuthugger.
LoneWolf- May 19, 2009 at 2:32 pm
WOW, this is turning out to be one great card! Great job Strikeforce
CLOZER- May 19, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Mike Whitehead is going to actually face some top level competition? Randleman is gonna make him look bad.
Thats Mister Pervet to you Miss Carano- May 19, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Swedish, crank one out, clean off your chest, and then relax. I pay seven dollars a month for showtime just this card is well worth that. I've paid fifty for ufc cards that were shameful.
Nippletwist- May 19, 2009 at 2:20 pm
my god arlovski will kill him

strikeforce actually has a pretty decent roster, they're gonna end up with pretty legit WW, MW, and HW champions. it's a good start.
Dante- May 19, 2009 at 2:20 pm
How does a website grow up? Eat a dick.

Arlovski has a glassjaw, so I wouldn't count Brett Pudgster out.

This card will be good so long that Diaz and Baroni gets put into a coma. I'd also like see Randleman tear someone in two.
Fedor vs. Bas- May 19, 2009 at 2:11 pm
That is starting to be a great card. I'm so glad a promotion other than the UFC can at least put on a legit card. I was starting to worry.

*Best thing about this card... no women's MMA.
House Party- May 19, 2009 at 2:08 pm
i would like to see arlovski and overeem go head to head more then i would want to see rogers and overeem
sxjohnson- May 19, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Great card... I only wish it was on a more accessible channel.
I don't get Showtime, and don't want to pay $20 for the next however many months just to watch StrikeForce. Most sports bars that normally show MMA events (even HDNet ones) aren't showing this.
