Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Out of UFC 109; Brandon Vera Likely to Meet Jon Jones in March

Due to a fractured ankle, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has been forced to withdraw from his co-headlining bout against Brandon Vera at UFC 109 (February 6, Las Vegas). Shortly after the news broke, Vera posted (then quickly removed) the following message on his Twitter page: "just found out I’m firing Jon Bones Jones on March 21st in Denver Colorado. hope u heard it here first!!!!"

We can only assume that Vera meant "fighting Jon Bones Jones," and that he won’t be flying out to Denver to terminate Jones from his contract, Clooney-style. And the March 21st date may also be a misprint: MMA Junkie and MMA Weekly both report that the yet-unsigned fight is actually slated for March 31st, and will headline an Ultimate Fight Night card just four days after UFC 111 (March 27, Newark). The 3/31 Fight Night show will lead directly into the premiere of TUF 11.

With Vera losing a close decision to Randy Couture at UFC 105, and Jones coming off his unfortunate DQ loss against Matt Hamill earlier this month at the TUF 10 Finale, both men will come into this fight with a lot to prove. Jones certainly has the wrestling advantage — as well as the spinning-elbow advantage — but will Vera’s rangy kickboxing cause problems for young Bones?

This sucks so bad for Vera. One minute, your the next hot thing. The next minute, you're the dud that never went off. And the next minute is a doosy, because now you're standing in a cage staring across at fucking Jon Jones and losing this match means taking what is likely to be a very serious beating, losing your job and most of the respect that you talked people out of for the past few years. Jones by Overwhelmation. (That's what I call his style) Vera tries to pittypat and that won't cut it. Vera should have destroyed Randy and could have, but it's true he lacks that "gear" they noted. Jones lacks control, but that's good sometimes. Shit, my wife LOVES Vera and the first thing she said was "Oh shit... too bad, Vera!"

If Vera couldn't get up and off for his fight against Couture, there is no way he will be able to get going for the Jones fight.

Your so right, There are few fighters that speak to the media like Vera, I do not think Vera is aware of his record either, he still was talking about being heavyweight and light heavyweight champ, that's old talk that I never bought in the first place and to hear him still talking about it further confirms that he is just that....Talk.
He should have been gone after the Jardine fight, he should have had a couple fights outside of the UFC at 205 then come back to take on Couture or someone else.

I don't think I'm alone in saying that I've been waiting for this to happen for far too long to think that it will actually happen. It's what should have happened, what should happen but what, unfortunately, I don't think will ever happen.

Vera is one of the most frustrating fighters for me to watch. He's got the talent, he's got the skills but he has no fifth gear. Zero. And, as a stand-up favoring fighter, I want him to find that gear, shin kick Couture in the face in the third round, but he doesn't and he won't. He's just got something missing. Killer instinct or willingness to risk . . . I don't know. It's frustrating.

Bones has a fifth gear - hell, he starts out in third. He's creative and willing to risk. He has the wrestling and the striking. Bones is going to punish Vera's lack of imagination.

Vera isn't all that bad...we all know he beat Couture who just hugged him for 15 mins. Jones hasn't beaten anyone with a name other than Bonnar who hasn't beaten someone worth mentioning since '06 but I guess the same goes for Vera. I think it'll be an interesting fight and not the slaughter everyone thinks it'll be.

I don't think it's so much that everyone is swinging off JBJ's nuts--it's that a lot of us really want Vera to get trainwrecked and Kimboplexed and ninja'd into a coma. And Bones is capable of delivering.
