Aoki Considering Retirement After Disastrous NYE Knockout?

(Sure, he looks like a bum, but he’s got a golden radio voice. PicProps: SBNation)

More good stuff out on Sunday from MMA Fighting Japanese correspondent Daniel Herbertson, who debuts a new weekly, notebook-style feature chock full of overseas news tidbits. Item No. 1? According to D-Herb – citing those ever-present “sources close to the fighter” — Dream lightweight champion and notorious a-hole Shinya Aoki is considering hanging up the fingerless gloves after his embarrassing knockout loss to Yuichiro "Jienotsu" Nagashima at K-1 Dynatmite!!! 2010 on New Year’s Eve.

You’ll remember this bout as the “special rules” contest that alternated a three-minute kickboxing round followed by a five-minute round under Dream rules. You know, kind of like they do it on “Bully Beatdown.” You’ll also recall that Aoki clearly came out with a game plan to just fuck around during round one, waste as much time as possible with copious rule-breaking and rely on the impotent Japanese referee to not penalize him for it. It was a strategy that worked like clockwork until the opening bell of round two, when Nagashima knocked him stiff with a knee as he shot in for a takedown. On this side of the Pacific, it seemed like an obvious case of karma being a complete bitch. At home, it doesn’t sound like Aoki is taking it too well.

Herbertson reports that in the wake of the loss the grappling champion was forced to delete his Twitter account due to unrelenting taunts from Nagashima fans. Real classy, you guys. After deleting his personal account (@waoki), Aoki established a new, more private presence on Twitter under the alias @jyotaronawo, Herbertson writes.  So yeah, that seems like a pretty weird thing to do. Maybe Aoki just can’t live without reading Phil Baroni’s countless daily affirmations.

But here’s the real kicker: Aoki has also allegedly “privately expressed” a desire to walk away from MMA competition to focus his attention on his job as an instructor at the Deep gym. Should we buy that? Maybe, maybe not, according to Herbertson:

“Despite Aoki’s apparent depression, if I were a betting man, I’d wager that we would see a return of the Baka Survivor in 2011,” he writes. “FEG are currently undergoing restructuring and planning and we should know more about the future of the promoter and lightweight ace by the end of January.”

Aoki admittedly had a pretty terrible 2010. He actually went 3-1 in legitimate MMA competition but essentially got destroyed in his highest profile fight (at least as far as we Americans are concerned, and we all know the universe revolves around us), against Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez in April. He’s still hanging around the middle of most analysts’ Top 10 lists, but he sure didn’t win friends and influence people with his performance against Nagashima to close out the calendar year.

Given a few seconds to think about it (and really that’s all we’re willing to invest at this point) we guess the MMA world is more interesting with Aoki in it, but we’ll go ahead and take this report as another tiny piece of the puzzle that maybe the Man in Tights’ heart just isn’t in it anymore.

He may be a bit of a douche but I do enjoy his submissions so I hope doesn't retire.
Smitty- January 16, 2011 at 8:25 pm
Anyone that says or thinks Chuck Liddell can beat Overeem now, has proven themself to be the most uninformed person in the history of MMA.
dranokills- January 16, 2011 at 7:24 pm
I know, I know...fukin fags.....what can you do...besides open a hunting season.
ccman- January 16, 2011 at 7:05 pm
A. What blood said. Beat me to it.
B. Dream 2 years ago had some arguement on only the lighter classes as being competitive. Those have all been since exposed as a lot weaker than originally thought thru cross promo fights.
C. Duffee was mostly media touted... not ufc. And it was for his record knockout. He only had 2 ufc fights and got brutally koed by a guy with a broken arm.
D. Since apparently you were unaware duffee took fight on 8 days notice nor that securing visas and travel he was probably in japan maybe 2 days before the fight, minus a lucky punch he was not really expected to win. And if you watched fight he knew it and went for fast win to even have a chance. Yet more reem crushing huh? Yup, sure sounds like I was the stupid one here.
E. Anytime someone makes a point by saying a pro anything could beat an amatuer pretty much negates everything else... basically its lowest common denominator arguement, they should. How do they stack against other pros is the arguement. And dreams don't stack.

MMAINMYBLOOD- January 16, 2011 at 6:07 pm
Ninkanerd...Im not trying to defend the UFC here but Duffee only had 8 days to get ready for Reem Duffee needs alot more work. Sure hes a can crusher and all but he is friggin huge and he is the champeen... But I still think Chuck would fuck him up again horse meat and all...
KarmaAteMyCat- January 16, 2011 at 4:26 pm
They didn't fire Todd Duffee he was released from contract they'll take him back at some point.
NinjaNerd8- January 16, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Overeem, the Dream Interim HW Champ, is considered a can crusher. But does the fact that he just blasted Duffee in 19 seconds mean that the UFC is capable of considering cans "rising contenders?" Because that's what they thought about Duffee before they fired him for having a "bad attitude."

I bet they're wishing they didn't speak so highly of him for a while now that he's been destroyed by Overeem, right?

Of course not. The UFC, though it has most of the best talent, doesn't completely monopolize it. Other organizations, in all of which I'm sure you'd fail, deserve some credit.

Having shown how what you said was stupid I'll say this. Duffee actually a decent fighter. Most importantly, he puts his pride and safety on the line for your entertainment.
NinjaNerd8- January 16, 2011 at 3:59 pm
Lol @ Aoki getting "destroyed" by Melendez.

I hate when people say this sort of thing but it's so necessary in this situation: Melendez would get raped by most of the LW's in the UFC. The nut-hugging this guy has received from the MMA "media" is pretty annoying.

I don't want to rag on the guy because I'm sure he's a nice person but MMA journalists should try to be a little more objective. He's #2 because he went 1 and 1 with J.T.? Because he won a SD over Guida? A workman-like UD over Aoki doesn't make you better than BJ, Jim Miller, G Sot etc or even Maynard, Tyson, Tibau, Sherk, Dunham etc

I mean come on now.
ccman- January 16, 2011 at 3:54 pm
Ok I understand to damn many of you out there love all things not ufc, but outside japan Aoki can not compete. Seriously, yes he has pulled some crazy submissions, in those pant things. He is a great grappler which in any real mma competition still doesn't do much. Dream has absolutely been exposed as bush league and more wwe than anything. Putting him top 10 is a disservice to people who actually complete their game.

Rainbow shit!....none the less......Do you get that from eating a diet consisting solely of Jelly Beans?
dranokills- January 16, 2011 at 2:51 pm
wake when its "Igiveafuck-30".
halfbreed23- January 16, 2011 at 2:02 pm
Wins vs Joachim Hansen, Caol Uno, Eddie Alvarez, Kawajiri and Vitor Ribeiro. He "one dimensioned" his way to a 26-5 record. Eat shit haters. Rainbow shit.
Smitty- January 16, 2011 at 1:41 pm
The man has definately got some ground skills, but I always thought he was a bit over rated.
DangadaDang- January 16, 2011 at 12:23 pm
It was just before new years day,
He was up before the dawn,
He only liked to fight his way,
Flippin birds and breaking arms,

Like a schoolgirl without the dress,
Like a fighter without the stones,
Fought round one like flubber,
Minus the green skin tone,

I hope he preaches what he say,
Since he's an undisputed douche,
Only could fight his own way,
Has the stand up of a youth,

Goodbye Shinya, you weren't nice
A beautifully placed knee sent you to paradise
Praying for the start of round two,
Watched your empire fall before you,

Goodbye Aoki, back to BJJ,
Hope you vanish without a trace,
Feel the sorrow, feel the shame,
Yuichiro felt no pain
DangadaDang- January 16, 2011 at 11:55 am
This just proves to me how little heart Aoki actually has. Its called Mixed Martial Arts you hipster prick, that means you need to train your stand up beyond that of an elementary schooler. Who cares how good your ground game is if you can't manage to get the fight to the ground *cough* Melendez*. You know who else has a killer ground game? Dean Lister. And guess what, dude didn't wanna learn how to strike and now he's semi retired too. Good riddance Aoki.

Ya RSparrow I was gonna say, CP just did you a solid by combining your last two steps of every morning. Now you dont have to go down into your basement/sweatshop
Dr. Toboggan- January 16, 2011 at 11:11 am
If Aoki retires, who fights for the WAMMA title?
RSparrow- January 16, 2011 at 11:11 am
Just kidding, nothing like a good jerk to start off the day.
RSparrow- January 16, 2011 at 11:04 am
Woke up, hungover, cage, little asian in underwear...

I'm clearly not ready for today. Goodbye.
Ballkick- January 16, 2011 at 10:23 am
President Hirohito: Nothing. We are very simple people. With very small penis. Mr. Aoki's penis is …especially small.
Mr. Aoki:[fakes a sob] Uh, smuh, so small.
fightfan- January 16, 2011 at 10:06 am
Cant wait for this arrogant cocky bastard to go away and stick to BJJ competitions. I wish his NYE opponent would of stared of his cold limp passed body and flipped him the bird & degraded him like he did when he broke dude's arm.

Never understood why people thought this guy was a top ranked fighter. He hs absolutely ZERO stand up. He is the most 1 dimensional fighter out there. since when has 1 dimensinoal fighter been considered number 1 or near the top?? Sure. he has a great BJJ game.....but as for the other aspects of mma, well he dont have much of a game
