With the vote to lift the ban on MMA in New York State imminent (or so we hear), our NY state assemblyman friend Rob Walker has taken to Facebook to drum up some more support. In the mission statement for his newly-launched group "Support Mixed Martial Arts in New York State," Walker writes the following:
I have been in talks with representatives from the UFC and we are trying to pass a bill that will allow for the sanction of the UFC. By joining this group we hope that it will help show people how much people want to see the sport be once again allowed in New York. The problem we are having is the miss conception of what the sport is. It has been called, "Human Cock Fighting" it has been criticized by everyone but what people do not realize is how far the sport has come.
Rules are now in place to protect the competitors. There is equipment and protective gear to enhance the safety and to reduce injuries to the competitors. Unlike boxing you do not just stand there and get punched in the head, Mixed Martial Arts is safer than boxing. There are numerous styles of fighting the sport promotes and you can be doing anything from boxing, to wrestling to some form of Martial Arts. By allowing the sport to be sanctioned we will have control over the sport, there are numerous under ground fight clubs all over the State that are done illegally. The dangers that come with this are tremendous and there is no control or limit on what goes on at these fights.
This sport has barely scratched the surface of its potential and New York State can not afford to miss out on this great opportunity, so help us out by supporting the sport and listening to the reasons why this support can be so successful.
If you’re on Facebook, and especially if you live in New York, please do us a huge favor and join this group. The tide is turning thanks to grassroots movements like this, and getting a UFC event to Madison Square Garden in early 2010 is becoming a very real possibility.
