Atenicio Denies Rumors That Affliction MMA Is Finished

(Props: CombatLifestyle)

BloodyElbow kicked up a lot of dust last night when they published a rumor saying that Affliction was preparing to shut its doors as an MMA promotion, and might be trying to arrange a deal with Zuffa to cut some of their extensive losses. In response, Tom Atencio went on the Hardcore Sports Rage show (Sirius 98) to deny the reports, saying that Affliction’s MMA promotion still had the backing of Golden Boy Promotions, Donald Trump and M-1 Global:

"The rumors are just that, rumors, they’re not true, there’s no truth to it. People love to build you up, but they love to watch you fall even more and hopefully I’m not that guy. I’ve always maintained that I’ve taken the high road, I don’t talk shit about people."

The rumor apparently originated from an incident on the Tom Leykis Show, where someone called in claiming to be the Affliction VP. The real Tom Atencio denies he was on the show, and denies that Affliction is reaching out to the UFC for a parachute, though he wouldn’t speak about the details of the company’s financials. ("That’s like me coming in and asking you how much you make at your company," he said.) Atencio suggested that the UFC felt threatened by Affliction’s relationship with Fedor Emelianenko, and asked everyone to just please chill out:

"Right now, I’m learning a lot about this business. I’ve been honest from day one and right now, I’m going to sit down with Golden Boy, M-1 and Mr. Trump and we’re going to figure out how we’re going forward. We’re going to do events every three or four months…The bottom line is, this is only our second event, let me learn, let me do what I’m doing, but I must be doing something right because someone is starting these rumors"
I’m not in business and my partners aren’t in business to lose money, so things will work out…Everything that I do and every time that somebody doubts me and every time there’s another boulder in the road, I just go around it. This is a pretty fun part of life for me. I can honestly sit back and say that I love my life, I love what I do, I love where I am and even if there’s change, I’m just going to get up and move forward."

To add a new wrinkle to the story, Fight Opinion claimed that the original BloodyElbow rumor post was actually planted by Zuffa itself, though BE vehemently denies it.

Bootylam! Says:

"You mean you can't pay the fighters more than the event makes? Who knew? And please stop with this "fighters made the UFC" crap. With no promotion or behind the scenes BUSINESS these fighters would have to go back to fighting and training in obscurity. Also, most of these guys would still practice MMA anyway"

THE FIGHTERS DID MAKE THE UFC! The fighters are the ones puttin asses in seats.. They do all the work and make all the money for the BUSINESS.. Fans pay to see the fighters not the promotion

They can't sign over their fighter's, the contract's our non-transferable.

Usually, sports rumors end up being true. Like when NFL coaches are confronted about them being in hot water and they deny it saying all is fine. Then u find out they've been fired days after. I really enjoyed Afflictions latest event and hope they tough out the financial deal. If Trump, Golden Boy and M1-Global are really still backing them up like Attencio says, then it's just a matter of time before they become a real threat (as in competition) to the UFC. But for now the UFC IS the best. Long live MMA!

Did the guy who called Tom Leykis follow up his Affliction-is-doomed remarks by saying he's flashing a car on the freeway, then telling a story about how he totally banged this "beotch" by making her buy her own drinks?

I bet he hung up and yelled at his mom for calling him to dinner when he was on the phone with his [best] friend.

I'm beginning to like Tom Atencio more and more. He makes money off of douchebags who wear MMA shirts but dont fight. I would like to take their parents money too. Right On Tom. Don't let the world get you down mate, One day I see a giant Super Orginization with all weight classes and fighters. A true monopoly.

I think I'm the only mma fan that wants ufc to be the only org around. My reasoning is simple, if all the best fighters are in one place then they can all fight eachother without all the bullshit. Look at what came of pride's downfall: Griffin vs Shogun, Wanderlie vs lidell, Rampage vs Griffin, Noguera vs Mir ect. That is what I like to see. That way we don't have to have these arguments over who would win in a fight that will never happen.

If afflicition DOES stay around they need to do the following for me to be a fan:

-Fire Jerry Millen
-Fire the Italian mafia looking guy
-Execute Ferral (ciggarette voice) hanging/lethal injection/firing squad/fedor are all acceptable choices for dealing with this issue
-Get Tito enrolled in some english/public speaking classes, or fire him

I want to see Affliction prosper.

Don't get me wrong, I like the UFC, although Dana seems to think he is a Soprano Jr., but Affliction puts together a pretty good show and I like the ring vs cage.

if their third show was suppose to be in Atlantic city ill be pissed.

ufc barely comes around, and fedor to appear here and then be cancelled?

id kick Attencio so hard trump's wig would fall off of Oscar.

Shit, I hope they really are just rumors. Affliction puts together some pretty damn sweet cards, I want to see them stick around. We all love the UFC, but some decent competition is good for the sport and even better for MMA fans

Even though Affliction dresses everyone like a bunch of tools I want to see them succeed so their is some competition in the MMA world in America. The fighters need a chance to make more money and have leverage. For the bast 10-15 years the UFC has dominated the US market and its time for fighters to get their share. They are the ones that made this sport grow, not Dana White and not anyone else.
Anderson Silva who?- January 30, 2009 at 6:37 am
Can someone tell me what the hell happen to EXC fighters? Why doesn't Affliction buy some of them up?
Higgz- January 30, 2009 at 6:34 am
Since when has Tom Attencio given us any reason to believe anything he says? I'll still skepticle if Day of Reckoning actually happened.
HORTON- January 30, 2009 at 6:29 am
I said this months ago that they will work a deal with UFC in exchange for sponsorship for there shirts they will sign over the fighters they have including Fedor
The economy is down and their sales are down ,they cant continoue to take loses including everyone involved Trump, Golden Boy etc
Sodak- January 30, 2009 at 6:22 am
the only thing i don't like about affliction is WAMMA which is gayya, we don't need that gay boxing shit in mma and it don't mean shit anyway. oh yeah and millens a douchebag. hope this shit ain't true but who knows attencio has fed us BS in the past.
Saggy Ballsack- January 30, 2009 at 6:09 am
Atencios a good guy. WTF is wrong with the UFC. Calm the fuck down!!! This is all said to have started with a UFC employee making shit up on the MMA blogs.
