Authentic Brands Group Lays the Smackdown on Cancer Non-Profit Over ‘Tapout’ Usage

(Pic props: Tapout Cancer via MMAPayout.com)

Apparently Dana White isn’t the only person in the MMA community who keeps a cease and desist in their back pocket, eagerly awaiting to ruin someone’s fun.

MMAPayout.com is reporting that Authentic Brands Group, owner of MMA brands Sinister, Silverstar and Tapout, has officially served notice to the non-profit cancer awareness company Tap Out Cancer over the use of a federally trademarked word ‘tapout’.

All I can think about is Mask rolling over in his grave right now. First the “bro deals” went out the window and now this. I understand the business logic behind the decision. However, I feel it’s a missed opportunity for the most recognizable MMA apparel company to have a positive impact in the lives of others while gaining the hearts of media everywhere. What do you guys think?

TapouT died last year from a cancer triggered by a car wreck.
Dizzylittlelord- August 27, 2011 at 6:44 am
surely if they got behind that it would help out mma, no business acumen and now even more people will just not wear their apparel, stupid move
SnackDaddy- August 27, 2011 at 5:20 am
That's the best looking Tapout shirt right there. If i was a fighter in the UFC, i'd totally wear it as to the walk-out.
Also, what the fuck? These captcha's are really getting to another level now. You're loosing the rest of us along with those people selling fake Asian stuff.

Fucken unbeleivable, as CP says Mask would not be happy with this bullshit, not everyones apparel of choice, but I think anyone who has any idea of MMA industry history know the philosophy TAPOUT started with, and this shitty decision by the new brand owners is bullshit, MMA orgs(UFC) would do well to embrace these charities, I'm sure the fighters (most) wouldn't begrudge some time for make-a-wish, starlight foundation etc, business is business, but FFS

Blinded by the greed.
El Guapo- August 26, 2011 at 3:26 pm
^Yeeaaahhhh, doesn't have the same affect three hours later. But more importantly I wanted to make it clear I have no problem with the gays. Or the lames. My initial comment, without the zinger, is hurtful the gays, the lames, and CP's master plan of conquering the MMA world. For that I apologize.
El Guapo- August 26, 2011 at 3:20 pm
If anybody's still out there, my first post was supposed to have a follow up but my computer is going f'n haywire today for some reason. Aaaaanywat, without further ado, the zinger...
"HOWEVER, those tight ass TapOut booty shorts are a whole 'nother story! In fact, I'm wearing some right now. It IS casual Friday afterall.."

J-Dog- August 26, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Next time Rogan and Goldie are calling a fight and someone is caught in a choke, they'd better be saying "he needs to SUBMIT or he's going to sleep". If they say "he needs to tap out" then they might get sued or something. Geez...
O Chan- August 26, 2011 at 1:48 pm
I won't jump to conclusions quite yet. It's just a cease and desist order. What probably happened was word got to the lawyers that another company was using their trademarked name, and they issued the CD to at least figure it out. I'm sure once the dust clears, everything will be worked out. From my understanding, the surviving co-founders of TapOut are stand up guys and I seriously doubt they would want to take away from the charity.

If you are a fat American that is fine.
.
You can be a fat latin American, a fat catholic American, or a big fat fuck. What you can't be a Mexican American while residing in the United States.
.
Unless I got this all fucked up, the U.S. requires that to be an American citizen, in almost every case - one must renounce all other citizenship from all other countries.
.
If we are talking about a "Fat Mexican" in the U.S., then he/she's is either an illegal alien, or someone with a legitimate ViSA. In both cases, they will forever be just a fat Mexican.
.
Ringo what's your status, are you a fat fuck Mexican, or a fat fuck American?
WrenJoRo- August 26, 2011 at 1:16 pm
^^^ AGREED
ArmFarmer- August 26, 2011 at 12:04 pm
Saying "fat mexicans" isn't being racist, it's being descriptive. Apparently he has seen multiple overweight mexican people wearing tap out shirts and starting fights in parking lots in San Diego. He is simply reporting his observations. Stop being so godamn sensitive. Regardless, I doubt anyone will argue that tapout wearing douchebags come in all shapes and colors.

I don't know which shirts I hate more, Tapout or Affliction. They're all gayer than a leather fannypack full of rainbows if you ask me.
Ringo- August 26, 2011 at 11:41 am
@Slapahoetribe
whats with the racist comment about "fat mexicans"?
douches come in every race, as your comment shows.
its a dick move from a dick company.
Gobbleston- August 26, 2011 at 11:34 am
Except that they're not using the Tapout images/logo. They're using the words "tap (space) out". Should Joe Rogan be sued every time he says those words? Should bars be sued when putting informational labels on their kegs? Poop, Poop, Poop.
MKO- August 26, 2011 at 11:29 am
It seems shitty, but from a legal standpoint, you all but have to do this. If you don't protect your copyright, it is all but open season if you knowingly allow one company to use your images without notice (sets precedent). It's also not as simple as just then licensing the group to use your copyright; you never want to not be in control of what is being produced.
Again, seems shitty, but gots to do it.
ArmFarmer- August 26, 2011 at 11:21 am
hetero tapout shirts just haven't come out of the closet yet, they are still gayer than two men having butt sex.
Fried Taco- August 26, 2011 at 11:14 am
Me to, El Guapo, I only wear the cool, hetero TapouT shirts. All the girls love it!
El Guapo- August 26, 2011 at 11:07 am
I'm extremely proud to say I have never wore a lame, gay ass TapOut t-shirt in my life..
