Bellator Featherweight Tournament Winner Daniel Straus Arrested for Drug Possession, Driving on Suspended License

(Daniel Straus mugshot via…hmm…I want to say Jailbase, maybe?)

2013 has already gotten off to a very rocky start for Bellator featherweight Daniel Straus. Just a few days after he was forced to withdraw from his scheduled April 4th title fight against Pat Curran due to a broken hand, Straus was arrested this past Friday in Broward County, Florida, for driving with a suspended license, possession of over 20 grams of cannabis or three grams of synthetic cannabis, possession of MDMA (ecstacy), and drug paraphernalia possession or use.

The 28-year-old Cincinnati native (born Daniel Mason-Straus) was taken to the North Broward Bureau Detention Center in Pompano Beach on a bond of $2,200, and third-degree felony charges were filed yesterday in the Broward County Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Straus is currently unlisted in the Broward Sheriff’s Office inmate database.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Straus has run afoul of the law. As he told ESPN in October:

By the time I was a junior in high school, I was living on my own, living with other people. I was in and out of school, doing whatever I wanted to do. I got arrested on robbery charges and ended up going to prison for three years — from 2004 to 2007. You learn a lot when you’re locked up. Trust meSo, when I came home it was like, ‘What are you going to do with your life?’ It wasn’t like I had a college education. It wasn’t like I had a GED. I didn’t have plenty of opportunities waiting for me.”

We’ll see if his opportunities dry up even further after this latest incident. Straus, who has compiled a 7-1 record in the Bellator promotion — including a sweep of Bellator’s Season 6 Featherweight Tournament last year — has already seen his shot at Bellator gold delayed due to the logjam in the division created by Pat Curran’s fractured orbital bone last August. Straus most recently competed in a non-tournament bout at Bellator 78, where he defeated Alvin Robinson by rear-naked choke.

I wonder if he tries to scratch all those little words off his face when he's stoned.

His bail is only $2200.00? He probably got pulled over for some minor traffic violation, they ran his license and it was suspended so they were going to tow his car and then they searched him for being black and found three ecstasy tabs and a half smoked twenty sack of spice.

It could have been much worse if he ate the ecstasy, smoked the spice, and did Dance Floor Dale in the underwear department at Walmart.

I thought he was smarter than this. I mean he wears glasses and everything.

From looking at him, I never would have guessed he was a pot smoker.

Usually thug type fighters have a stand up style. I guess he grinds in and out the cage

Although Straus will not be using those phrases, he will be familiar with "rear naked" - "taking his back" - and "full mount"

i'm betting Straus will not be using the phrases "wrestlefuck", "top control", or "grind out a win" for the next 8-10.
