Big Nog Out of UFC 119 With Injury, Cro Cop to Fill in Against Frank Mir

According to Fighters Only, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will be unable to face Frank Mir in their headlining rematch at UFC 119 (September 25th, Indianapolis), due to an injury that will require surgery. Which sucks for him, but on the bright side, you didn’t really care about that fight anyway. Stepping in for Big Nog will be Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, who has been surging back to relevance with back-to-back stoppage victories over Anthony Perosh and Pat Barry. It’s a huge opportunity for Cro Cop, who would finally become a legitimate heavyweight contender in the UFC with a win over the former champion. Mir hasn’t competed since his TKO loss to Shane Carwin at UFC 111, which followed his quick spanking of Cheick Kongo last December.

Though Nogueira had to undergo knee surgery in 2009, his latest injury is possibly hip-related. Big Nog has also battled staph infections in recent years, which delayed his meeting with Cain Velasquez, and supposedly affected his first performance against Frank Mir at UFC 92. After suffering the only two stoppage losses of his career in his last three fights, it seems that Nogueira has finally learned his lesson about fighting hurt. But after so many tough battles, injuries, and illnesses, will his body ever fully recover?

It might not be likely or even logical but lets at least all agree to stand behind Cro Cop for this one I mean does Mir even have any fans? the guys a complete douchebag who gets fucking destroyed by every Wrestler who stands with him or goes to the ground with him. Seriously frank go beat up some more shitty half assed gate keepers.
mt59801- August 16, 2010 at 1:28 pm
I like both guys, cro-cop was the shit in pride but I don't see this being anything more than a 2 1/2 minute exhibition of mir's full arsenal
joshuan29- August 16, 2010 at 1:03 pm
I say Mir is this fight plus one more relevant win from another shot.
Goog- August 16, 2010 at 11:27 am
Totally agree - as long as we're talking about the irrelevance of this. How does beating Cro Cop, a non-contender, put Mir 2nd in line for a shot? What about Roy Nelson? I thought he's been thrown in. I just don't see how Mir is always only one fight away from another title shot, especially after getting embarrassed by Lesnar and Carwin.

"(Cro Cop)has been surging back to relevance after back to back stoppages over Anthony Perosh and Pat Barry."

First off, I'm a huge Cro Cop fan and I pray to the MMA gods he headkicks "I Love Me Some Me" Mir's noggin clean off. BUT to say "he's surging back to relevance" after beating The Hippo, a natural 205 pounder who normally takes on kangarooskies in the Outback and Pat Barry, who was fighting with more broken bones than a crash test dummy?? C'mon now, playa.
High Left Kick- August 16, 2010 at 10:09 am
as much as i want CroCop to win, Mir is gonna beat him down and strangle him. This one will prolly put Mirko away for good :/
RwilsonR- August 16, 2010 at 9:33 am
I have to give it to the UFC, though. Every decision that they make I may not like, but this is a great fight to put together on short notice. I really hope CroCop has one last left high kick left in him before retirement.

IMO this is a better fight than Mir-Nog II. Nice work Joe Silva.
joshuan29- August 16, 2010 at 8:21 am
Mir has this one in the bag. Mir can stand with Cro Cop. Cro Cop has a little more power but Mir is much more well rounded. I say Mir by knee bar.

After this one, I think he gets another shot at Carwin, unless Lesnar happens to loose to Cain V in which case it is Lesnar v Mir 3. Mir's been keeping pretty quiet, which leads me to believe he's probably training his ass off, for his last hurrah. He's had two good runs in the heavyweight division. If he stumbles again, or Dana won't give him a shot at the big boys, I think Frank heads for San Jose. After seeing Werdum sub Fedor, Mir is suddenly a threat to the Last Emperor.

Mir and Fedor would get a nice rating for SF, and the fight is interesting...... well at least until they get in there in the cage and Mir gets smashed.

CroCop is like 6'2, 235, and quite thick. He has stood up against well sized opponents in the past and I really don't think Mir will be that much of a challenge in that aspect. Mir has also recently said that he is looking to lose some size as he has realized being large like Carwin or Lesner just doesn't work for him.

I think it's an interesting matchup, with various ways it could end. I can see there's a lot of Mirko doubters which makes sense with the lack of drive he's had. But honestly I think him and Mir are pretty evenly matched. Mir isn't going to outwrestle CroCop, and I highly doubt he'll be making a former K-1 star look like a fool in the striking department. CroCop hits hard and his boxing is very legit. Mir doesn't exactly like getting punched in the face and it's not like he's known for having a chin.

I wouldn't bet on this fight but I think it's a toss up.

Ideal: CroCop pounds on Mir for three minutes before knocking him out with a left head kick. Then buzzsaws through Dos Santos. Matched up against Lesnar, CroCop enters as a gigantic underdog , puts on the show of his life, and knocks Lesnar silly in a five round war. Mirko holds his championship belt aloft, thanks the crowd, and announces his retirement. Then he tracks down Al Qaeda singlehandedly, invents a super-efficient internal combustion engine, and destroys the central SkyNet CPU moments before it gains self awareness.

If Mir comes in at 265 like he did in his last fight against Lesnar then I think he will crush crocop. Crocop could probably make the cut to 205 if he wanted to. He's not a big heavyweight.
destinationblood- August 16, 2010 at 6:49 am
since when is mir fat? dood has been looking pretty solid(shape wise). Does the winner get dos santos? I'd assume the loser will be going against Struve or Nelson at somepoint
knucklesamitch- August 16, 2010 at 6:39 am
I'd love to see CroCop win, but it's not going to happen. So the important question is, after this fight, how many more wins will it take before Mir gets another shot at Lesnar? Who does he have to fight to get it? I'm inclined to say that before either Carwin or Mir fight Lesnar again, they should have to fight each other again...but then Carwin will destroy Mir again before Lesnar gets the chance to.

Ahhh, screw it, either way Mir gets his face smashed in, and therefore I'm a happy fan.
Chavasse- August 16, 2010 at 6:37 am
On the picture you can see that Barry's right foot is swelling. Anyway, back on topic. Going to be a better fight indeed. Rooting for Mir myself.
FreddyFangers- August 16, 2010 at 6:35 am
CroCop is gonna get his shit pushed in... He probably likes that anyway.
Negativecreep0- August 16, 2010 at 6:32 am
unfortunately i would love for that fat bitch mir to be destroyed by cro cop..... unfortunately its not gonna happen,........ oh well atleast mir will be set up to get his face tenderized again by lessner......... You can't complain
SnallTrippin- August 16, 2010 at 6:23 am
Mir is gonna walk right over him. First round.

EDIT- How anyone can think CC is going to win is beyond me...anything is POSSIBLE..but, lol.
Viva Hate- August 16, 2010 at 6:21 am
Will Pat Barry be fluffing him for this fight as well?
MMA Mafia- August 16, 2010 at 6:21 am
Cro Cop looks like Mako in that picture. Just saying.....
eDrinker- August 16, 2010 at 6:18 am
Wow just registered (First).

I can't wait for this fight, IMO this is more interesting than Mir Nog. Crocop by KO. Although I would like Mir to win as I want to see Mir vs Lesnar 3.
