Bizarre Call-Out of the Day: Mark Coleman Knows Lyoto Machida’s Weaknesses

Thanks to his befuddling style and tendency to make opponents look like total amateurs, Lyoto Machida has never been one of those guys who other fighters like to call out. But a champion needs contenders, and if Quinton Jackson can’t figure out how to beat the Dragon later this year, someone will need to step up. Enter Mark Coleman. LatestMMANews chatted with the UFC Hall of Famer following UFC 98 and passed along these quotes:

“I’ve been training hard with “the Cat” and I feel confident that I know what [Machida's] weaknesses are, and how I can exploit them should we meet in the cage. In my past fights I relied on my wrestling too much and it showed. Now I know that the key is good cardio and a sound stand up game, which I have now. I don’t think Machida has faced a wrestler of my caliber before and I think stylistically I match up with him perfectly…

You know my cardio wasn’t up to scratch for [the Mauricio Rua fight] and I believe it was an early stoppage but whatever, I’m not one to make excuses. Ever since that fight me and Miller have been in the gym working hard on it and I can keep going for 25 minutes if necessary."

You know, it would almost be worth giving Coleman a shot at the light-heavyweight title just to see him try to exploit Machida’s non-existant weaknesses and get his shit pushed in. The ability to go 25 minutes probably wouldn’t be necessary — no matter how much he’s learned from his new wrestling/acting coach. Anyway, we’ll see just how improved the Hammer’s cardio and striking are at UFC 100, when he faces Stephan Bonnar. Though I have a feeling that a forced retirement will prevent us from seeing the Machida/Coleman dream fight we’ve all been waiting for…

Coleman has balls?? wtf... remember how big Colemans balls were when he was supposed to fight Lesner? yea, he bitched outta that fight cause he didn't want to get his ass slammed thru the cage, shit I bet AOKI could sub the hammer in less than 2 min. Mark's glory days are longggggggggg past.

whatever coleman does,be it work on cardio, improve striking and or dick taking abilities, i hope to all things holy that he grows some fucking eyebrows back. he looks less like hes ready for a fight and more like hes just endured radiation therapy while somehow able to pass a drug screen for synthetic testosterone.

It's good to hear that Mark Coleman is actually training for his next fight, that's a big improvement. He's not going to have a shot with Machida but with Ernest "The Cat" Miller's help he may be able to to take on Glacier and Mortis soon.

I think the question to wether Coleman gets a shot at Machida will be answered when Bonnar, whose face was turned into a bloody punching bag by Machida when he was like 12, beats grandpa Hammer into a geriatric unit at the old folks home.

I love that Coleman still has ballz, and that warrior attitude to call out anybody and think he has a shot to take them down...but give it up old man. You are a legend, enjoy your legendary status, and please don't tarnish the legacy by enduring further ass-beatings...cause Lyoto isn't rusty like Rua was when you faced him....

This is just Ridiculous! I'm even looking beyond Rampage for someone who really does match up against Machida, and I just don't see it happening anytime soon. When will the UFC start ridding itself of these older "Big Names" and refresh its talentpool? Once Maia destroys Silva we'll be watching the same four Champions for the next five years from 155 up to 205. They really need to start searching for new talent or at least get out the check book and bring in some guys who the people want to see ie: Fedor, Le, WTF! There is obviously no one in contention for 205, 185 (Once Maia destroys Silva), 170, or 155 (no way does Florian beat that whiny bitch BJ.) People are gonna start getting bored and drifting away from the UFC to other organizations, not because they offer better fighters, just better fights. The only interesting fight I see in the near future (in my opinion) is Hendo Bisping, and only because I want to see Bisping get his face broke off, not because it's that interesting of a fight card.
