BJ Believes Edgar’s Cornermen Persuaded the Judges He Won and that Frankie Ran from Him the Whole Fight

(Stay still and let me hit you, you Kalib Starnes wannabe fight avoiding wuss.)

We haven’t seen or heard much from BJ Penn leading up to his UFC 118 rematch with Frankie Edgar, which either means he’s been humbled a bit from the loss or he’s too busy training to talk to the media.

Well, the former UFC lightweight champion jumped back into the limelight with a bang this week, quashing the notion that losing to Edgar knocked him down a peg or two.

In a promo video for the August 28 show, Penn said that Edgar’s corner helped persuade the judges that the New Jersey native won the fight and that Frankie did nothing but run from him for 25 minutes during their fight in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112 back in April.

"He’s running around. Just step up and fight. And then I see his whole team run and pick him up. All your boys put you on their shoulders and dance you around in front of the judges and try to steal the victory. I’m not gonna be a part of that," Penn said. Whatever, man. That’s the man you are. You’re the "ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPION?" Okay. I got you. It’s a joke."

Penn went on to criticize Edgar’s skill set with a quote very similar to one delivered by Muhammad Ali in his prime.

"I’m not afraid to exchange with him in any way. I don’t think he wants to exchange with me. He’s  going to be running around. He’s just going to try to jazz up what he did last time. A little quicker, a little better, maybe throw in a little kick. His corner, they don’t have much to work with. They’ve just got little Frankie Edgar. They don’t have the knockout king or the submission king. They’ve just got Frankie Edgar."

So why all the hate from Penn?

BJ summed it up in a video blog he did a month and a half ago for his website:

"I just saw the fight between me and Frankie Edgar… While watching the fight I realized what everyone was talking about because it’s the first time I’ve seen the fight, and I don’t know how I lost every round. That’s pretty strange. And then it makes me think about how Frankie was trying to get out of the fight and fight Gray Maynard and not give me my rematch," Penn explained. "It makes me dislike Frankie very much for not giving me my chance when he wasn’t a big name and I gave him his shot… I don’t care if I win or lose. I can’t wait to see you in the ring Frankie. You’re trying to get out of the fight, it makes me dislike you, and I can’t wait to see you in the ring on August 28. Let’s do it."

An angry and motivated BJ Penn is a scary BJ Penn and Edgar won’t give up his belt easily. This should be a good scrap.

You're responding to statements in a hype trailer for UFC 118? How is this worthy of being blogged? You owe me a minute of my life for reading this and another for this response.

This site without Fowlkes is like M-1 without Fedor.

So now it wasn't just the "severe sinus infection" it was also frankie running away the entire fight (which isn't true) on top of his corner dancing around that persuaded the judges for the entire fight that penn lost..

I'd say I've lost some respect for penn, if I had any left for him.

I have theory that all of the UFC's belts are made from a mix of mercury and lead, any fighter who isn't coated in a protective layer of vaseline will eventually go bat-shit crazy

cabbage-patch face, awesome,...Bruce Buffer says, "and in this corner, BJ 'cabbage-patch' Penn"! ahahahahahahahhah

Man, I never thought I would say this: I'm actually starting to believe Tito these days.

Who honestly cares about Frankie? Nice guy for sure, but he should be on his knees thanking BJ to bringing some PPV buys with his whining. And Edgar wanted to fight Gray for his first title defense. Can you imagine the buyrates for that one? I hate these generic fighters (Gray, Frankie, etc.) who never think about the business side of things, then bitch about being underpaid, undervalued, etc.

It was and angry and motivated BJ Penn that wanted to fight GSP to the death.....and quit after 4 rounds. So if it's that same angry and motivated Penn, I like Frankie's chances.

There are so many fighters I used to like, until they started talking.

JoseMonkey Says: Here's the real question: if BJ had gotten controlled for 4.5 rounds but managed to pull off a last minute triangle / armbar . . . what would we be saying?

"Fuck Anderson Silva."

How about a little cheese with that whine? Then DON'T leave it to the judges! Penn is one of the worse losers I've ever seen! He doesn't seem to have respect for any of his opponeents, if he loses to them that is! You're lucky to get the rematch @ all! Should be a great fight...

Anyone on this site who honestly believes that BJ Penn doesn't deserve his rematch with Edgar is on heroin.

BJ Penn pre-Edgar Fluke was the most dominant lightweight in UFC history. He made Diego Sanchez look like a fucking amateur at a time when Diego Sanchez was making EVERY OTHER LIGHTWEIGHT IN THE DIVISION look like a fucking amateur. To say that BJ Penn doesn't deserve an immediate rematch would be like saying that GSP wouldn't deserve an immediate rematch if Fraggle-Fuck beats him. It's preposterous and downright ignorant of the facts.

BJ Penn HAD A FUCKING SINUS INFECTION prior to his fight in Abu Dhabi. I see him coming back healthy and focused and absolutely fucking DESTROYING Edgar in their second go around.
J-Dog- August 12, 2010 at 5:15 am
I find it hard to like BJ Penn. What a douche.

So the judges decide who wins the fight by who celebrates the most after the fight is over? Really? Do you think they go back and change their scores for each and every round based on who raises their hands at the final bell? What a retarded statement. This isn't the Ultimate Celebration Championship.

Dickweed to the death. To the death!

topdog- August 12, 2010 at 3:19 am
To all you BJ haters....are you kidding me? To be a champ you have to beat the champ convincingly especially if you go the distance. Now if Silva and Chael went the distance we all would agree that Chael won convincingly. Now think about the BJ and Edgar fight? In comparison did Edgar really take it from the champ? (crickets chirping).............Does a white boy get a VL placaso..No! (Inside joke) I will be celebrating my bday with a BJ win. Blood licking everywhere....!
Dagnut- August 12, 2010 at 2:22 am
I don't know why you guys are getting so angry at Penn, just watch the last 30 seconds of the fight against GSP and his stupid swollen head as he sat on the stool any time you feel the hate boil up....laugh and go about your business
ghostboner- August 12, 2010 at 12:46 am
FBF you are the man. I know this because you said what I was gonna say.

If BJ's only beef is that one judge scored it 50-45 then I got to agree with him. It was a really close fight, but that is a little much. But I don't think Frankie was really trying to bitch out on the rematch. I agree with Kid Meat Lips, BJ is prob just trying to hype the fight a little. He is fucked though, trying to follow Chael's act.
Emopinata- August 11, 2010 at 10:35 pm
the rematch is gonna be a repeat of their first fight,
frankie has tight boxing, he'll need to use his kicks,
and pretty much just do what he did in the first fight..
penn showed no way to beat him
frankie showed no way to beat him
its just a chess match,
bj taking edgar down.. iunooooooooo
maynard i think is the only one to do it with ease?
Ballkick- August 11, 2010 at 7:54 pm
I like BJ Penn, always have.
The thing is though, he has become a whinny little chode as of late.
Whined about GSP, whines about Edgar, you know for someone who has pretty much had the world handed to him on a silver platter,.......WTF does he have to bitch about?
I think all the people here on CP calling him a "dumb fucking coconut headed asshole" are completely justified in making that call. [Nice reference danomite]

I hope he fights hard and stops the sniveling when he loses. Like I told one of my fighters tonight you learn more from a loss than a win, suck it up and move forward. Just shut up beat Edgar and prove to everyone you are the bigger man and the better fighter.
just some dong- August 11, 2010 at 7:13 pm
Setting personal issues aside, BJ kept the center of the octagon for practically the entire fight and also landed the more impressive strikes in the form of multiple left hooks. It was a close fight, but BJ should have won IMO. Because no one really gave Frankie a shot and the kid is so likable, I think everyone sort of jumped on his bandwagon when he didn't get murdered right off the bat. I hope the rematch ends decisively.
greggsauce- August 11, 2010 at 6:45 pm
Yes I'm am an avid BJ nut-hugger. I will point that out right now, but when you look at the actual stats from the fight, BJ out struck Edgar until round 4 where edgar landed 1-2 more strikes, and round 5 where Edgar obviously landed about 40% more. 10-9, 10-9, draw, draw, 9-10. With that said I'd rather watch Edgar lose his belt to Maynard then see BJ take it from him. That fight was agonizing with how boring it was though.
Jersey Shua- August 11, 2010 at 6:40 pm
I think Frankie clearly won the first fight. BJ just kept his right foot planted and tried to counter every time Frankie came in. If he attacked the way he did against Florian, Sherk, etc. he should have won. All that said....GO FRANKIE!!!
RwilsonR- August 11, 2010 at 6:14 pm
@ danomite

Amen!!!!!

Fuck this fat, lazy, excuse-making Hawaiian, and his stupid cabbage-patch face. The absolute king of undeserved title shots. And he loses fight after fight, and still all these jackasses throw this fucker on PFP lists. PFP what? He has lost the last 3 of 3 at 170! And don't give me the shit about him being too small. He is more of a 170 pounder than Edgar is a 155'er. And the difference between Alves and GSP in size was greater than the difference between GSP and Penn, but GSP still won. Fuck his excuses! I just hope he loses. I hope Edgar tires his lazy ass out and submits him.
fatbellyfrank- August 11, 2010 at 6:10 pm
^ Thoroughly deserved win, showed the mark of a champion, and I really liked how he took the time to thank God for his victory, and who knew he was fightin with an injury that serious?

it was a crappy fight, not championship value. edgar stuck to his game plan to move around the octagon, and ultimately winning ala jake shields/john fitchzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
