Quote of the Day: BJ Penn Calls James Toney ‘God’s Gift to MMA’

(Behold, James Toney’s new UFC 118 walkout shirt design)
Fanhouse’s Ariel Helwani caught up with BJ Penn in Boston today ahead of his UFC 118 showdown with Frankie Edgar and he asked the former UFC lightweight champion if he thought James Toney beating Randy Couture would set the sport back.

In typical Penn fashion, "The Prodigy" had an interesting take on the situation.

"What’s worse than having the WWF champ [as] our heavyweight champ? That ain’t worse than having James Toney come out and win a fight. It’s great for the sport. James Toney is God’s gift to MMA right now," BJ asserted. "He’s promoting the sport; he’s telling everyone to go out and buy tickets, You can’t ask for a better guy than that. What James Toney is doing is putting more money in everybody’s pocket."

Penn also spoke about his rematch with Edgar Saturday night and his strained relationship with UFC president Dana White, which stem from some comments he made about his business dealings with Zuffa in his biography, "Why I fight."

Here’s the interview in its entirety:

lol shut the fuck up buddy. Running around here telling people they're gonna get tapped out and shit.

I am correct, Mohammed is not showed as a god, and isn't revered in any pictures or mosques ANYWHERE. He is simply a man who Allah chose. So if someone had pictures of 'Mohammed' in their house and claimed to be Islam they wouldn't really know that is, like you said, creating false prophets. Technically Jesus is a false prophet and sin to worship in Islam too. Although they do agree that he was a special person. You can only praise Allah. Nothing elseeee.

Anyways like everyone said it is an MMA site so I'll relax, I just hate losers who try to threaten people on websites.

PS. I'm not muslim, my families Christian. I've just taken several Religious Studies courses in university and do know enough to post. Honestly I don't give a shit who or what you believe in as long as you're not like myklhoey, trying to go batshit on a website. I wouldn't care if you worshipped cambells soup cans, as long as you were a relaxed, good person. Oh, and liking MMA is usually a plus.

Live and let live boys and girls, didn't we go thru this with Joshuan the other week on another post,
All Turd said was he wasn't to keen on the photoshop, his opinion , Cool & groovy, respect to you and your beliefs Turd. Bottom line is:
Beleivers gonna beleive
Haters gonna hate

Peace and love to all, whoever your God or otherwise is, your beliefs, live em love em, and thanks to Joshuan for making me think a bit more rationally on this one.

MoTropolis- August 26, 2010 at 9:55 am

Im actually hoping for some unintentional WWF homage being paid this saturday when Randy Couture chokes out Toney and leaves him with such little oxygen in his brain he gets up and starts chewing on the octagon equivalent of turnbuckles like George the animal.
Turd Furgeson- August 26, 2010 at 9:50 am

Respect bro. You're a true g.
Fried Taco- August 26, 2010 at 9:38 am

I don't believe BJ's newfound humility. If he stays this way for a year or two, maybe I'll start to buy it.

And I find it hilarious that he is now fond of US history, considering his previous bashing of it while calling for Hawaii's independence. Without even addressing his limited understanding of Hawaii's path to statehood, his lazy ass wouldn't live the comfortable life he leads without being a part of America. Without the US, his great grandparents probably would've spoken spanish, as Spain took what little resources the islands had to offer, and destroyed the indigenous culture. That is until his grandparents would have been forced to learn Japanese, as his grandfather would have been killed, and his grandmother would have been used as a comfort woman to the Japanese soldiers that would have occupied the island. Ultimately, the Japanese weren't too fond of non-Japanese, and it is doubtful the numberous Jay Penns would have ever come into existence. So BJ, have Lauzon show you around Boston, and learn to be thankful that your island was granted statehood.

And seriously... all Turd said was didn't like the photoshop. He didn't shove a Bible in your hand and call himself Esther.

I knida thought the photoshop was funny, myself. But I'm not a Christian, and I can see how he might not find it as funny. Like he said, he isn't Muslim, and so he simply expressed his displeasure and left it at that. He didn't threaten to kill you and everyone you know that does not belong to his religion.

OK just wanted to make sure we were on the same page, because it seems a lot of MMA fans are self conscious about their former fandom. I mean, come on, Hulkamania was a very real thing. Hell, Chris Leben hulked up for the third round against Akiyama!
J-Dog- August 26, 2010 at 9:07 am
Ariel Helwani is BY FAR the P4P slickest interviewer in all of MMA. Not a pause, stumble, "uhh". Dude is quick & direct.

Props to BJ for being fairly likeable for a moment.

@Roadhouse Superfan

Yea I loved wrestling in the 80's. I was a huge Jake the snake fan, I even bought a shitty little ribbon snake and named him damien. Then I would beat up my sisters and throw the snake over their limp, terrified body. I just view wrestling as pure entertainment. Although I think it is somewhat of a sport and the guys are extremely athletic, I dont think there are as many misconceptions about it as there are in regard to MMA. The major difference is that one has a pre-determined outcome that is acted out by professional actors who are in great shape and the other is a competitive sport that requires much more training and another word that I cant think of right now, but you get it. My point is, while I agree with you how ppl who shit on wrestling prolly take themselves too serious, I am not one of them. I just shit on people that defend its realism a la "Its still real to me dammit!". Also, I would add that people who defend wrestling and how "real" it is, take themselves too seriously as well.

Hey--I found jesus---He was behind my couch.
Turd Furgeson- August 26, 2010 at 8:37 am

Don't worry. Ghostboner was just trying to make light of the situation. He never really means harm.

And holy crap everybody. Calm down. It was never any sort of religious discussion. Just me defending myself for not liking one photoshop. I didn't try to convert anybody, or tell anybody their going to hell. As a matter of fact, y'all got more worked up about me being Christian than I ever did about the 'shop.
Harry Nips- August 26, 2010 at 8:36 am
So that's how you picture your Jesus? I like to picture mine wearing a Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt, some giant angel wings & he's hammered drunk.
Jesus Christ people, stop being so sensitive.

Good photoshop Mruss. If Toney was that ripped in real life he would look like a giant bobblehead.
Jaye Priest- August 26, 2010 at 8:18 am
Whoaaaaaaaaaaa..........I thought this was an MMA site, Not a religous study group. To tell you the truth-I just looked at the picture and laughed. How can anybody get fired up over a picture???? It's just a pic...........Keep the threads about MMA--Not about jesus lol.
Nealio- August 26, 2010 at 8:14 am
I don't see how anyone could hate on Baby J after that interview..
jimbonics- August 26, 2010 at 7:38 am
MRuss is great at photoshop

There are actually MMA for Jesus 'tards.

myklhoey is a Trolling for Jesus douchebag.

agentsmith remains funny

Black Jesus didn't Tap.

As was said, Jesus most likely resembled that 'shoop than he did the anglo representation you MMA for Jesus 'tards have ingrained in your brain. Hardly anything blasphemous about it.

Religion is for SUCKAS!! Too bad the posts on this article took a wild left at jesus camp, we couldve been shitting on JaredB for defending WWF.

WWF was frigging awesome and you know it. Don't say you didn't watch when you were little, because you did. 80s wrestling was the coolest thing ever, and even the 90s Attitude stuff was fun with Stone Cold and the Rock and all that. Anyone that hates on wrestling takes themselves way too seriously.
