Bob Sapp Gets Another Chance at Super Hulk Glory

(Sapp gets embarrassed by Ikuhisa Minowa at the DREAM Super Hulk Tournament’s opening round in May.)

With Gegard Mousasi out of DREAM’s freaky-deaky Super Hulk tournament due to a Fedor-related shoulder injury, DREAM went back to the well to find a replacement. Unsurprisingly, they’re bringing back Bob Sapp to take on Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in the GP’s second round, which goes down at DREAM.11 (October 6th, Yokohama, broadcast in North America on HDNet). During the Super Hulk quarterfinals at DREAM.9, Sokoudjou snapped a two-fight losing skid by wrecking Jan Nortje, while Bob Sapp got leglocked by Minowaman. The following month, Sapp tapped to strikes against Bobby Lashley at "Ultimate Chaos."

Tangling with Sokoudjou could bring Sapp yet another painful loss, and incredibly, he has a kickboxing match in Hong Kong scheduled for the next day, and may have another MMA fight slated for the next week in Texas. Said Sapp:

I definitely know it’s crazy fighting MMA and then kickboxing in another country right afterwards. I’m very well aware of that, but we’ve got to make hay while the horse is hungry, right?…Sokoudjou’s a great fighter. Without question, he’s ready to go. He’s kind of on his winning (ways), while I’m on the opposite end, on a losing streak. So I definitely would like to push forward and rebound back….If Sokoudjou wins I’ll probably be fighting a celebrity (on New Year’s Eve)."

Good, Bob. It’s nice to have options. Freak fights aside, DREAM.11 is looking nicely stacked, featuring the semi-finals and finals of their featherweight tournament, and the lightweight title fight/rubber-match between Shinya Aoki and Joachim Hansen. Here’s the lineup as it currently stands:

Lightweight Championship bout:
Joachim Hansen (champion) vs. Shinya Aoki

Featherweight Grand Prix Semi-Finals:
Bibiano Fernandes vs. Joe Warren
Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Hideo Tokoro

Featherweight Grand Prix Reserve bout:
Kazuyuki Miyata vs. Daiki Hata

Featherweight Grand Prix Finals:
Winner of Fernandes/Warren vs. Winner of Takaya/Tokoro

Super Hulk Grand Prix Semi-Finals:
Hong Man Choi vs. Ikuhisa Minowa
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Bob Sapp

Non-Tournament Bouts:
Gesias Calvancante vs. Daisuke Nakamura
Andrews Nakahara vs. Zelg Galesic

Sapp was embarrassed? Really? Minowa should be embarassed. That's the worst acting I've seen since Zombie Strippers.

Bob Sapp is to Japan what David Hasselhoff is to Germany. Always remember, Germans love David Hasselhoff.

You know, at the end of the day, big Bob is just doing what he loves. And making a ton of yen at it, as well. No matter how far his fighting skills have diminished since his almost-impressive near-destruction of Nog back in the day, I still like him.

I actual want Frankenhood to win, as unlikely as that is. Sokoudjou? What the hell is Sapp thinking? He should be fighting a guy dressed up like E. Honda instead.

I really want to see the featherweight grand prix. I hope Joe Warren takes it. And the Shinya Aoki fight should be great too. Time to record this on HDNet.
