Why Xcess Fighting chose to hold their debut event at a gay nightclub is beyond me. At any rate, the super macho fight organization’s “Havoc in Hollywood” show goes down tonight — but if you were planning on heading out there to get a glimpse of Eric “Butterbean” Esch, don’t bother.
The corpulent fight legend failed to show up at yesterday’s weigh-ins and has been replaced by Ruben “Warpath” Villareal in the super-heavyweight main event against Jimmy Ambriz. Xcess promoter Bruce Bellocchi blames scheduling conflicts for Butterbean’s absence. Luckily, there’s another big name on the card: Mark Kerr, who was immortalized in the 2002 documentary The Smashing Machine. Kerr hasn’t won a fight since August 2000, so it’s hard to predict how sharp he’ll look out there tonight. But one thing’s for sure — the music will be fabulous.
