CagePotato Power Rankings Updated

Jose Aldo MMA WEC
(Jose Aldo: Murdering his way to the #4 spot.)

After the recent whirlwind of MMA activity in the UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, and DREAM, I’ve updated the Heavyweight, Welterweight, and Featherweight pages of our Power Rankings section. Check ‘em out and let us know what you think. Do Jeff Monson and Brett Rogers deserve to sneak into the heavyweight list? Who do you think sits just outside of the welterweight top ten? Is it okay that I’m so biased towards the WEC’s featherweights? Feel free to peruse all our divisional rankings, though I realize that the middleweight list is severely outdated, and I might not even want to deal with it until after UFC 100.

How is Shane Carwin officially legit when none of his fights go past 2 minutes and yet Brett Rogers is hard to get a sense of how good he is because he knocks everyone out so fast? Jake Shields should be #2, and Nick Thompson...really? Oh and Arlovski is still a top 10 Heavyweight.

Fucking Josh Barnett #2? He wouldn't last a round with Mir, Carwin, Lesnar, or Couture... well maybe Couture just 'cause he's kinda old. He'd last with Nog since he did it twice, but he'd still lose to him. Josh is gonna get crushed by Fedor. Maybe Anderson Silva sneaks into the LHW rankings soon? Drop Robbie Lawler's overrated ass out too... he lost to a WW. As much as I hate Bisping, replace Lawler with him in there somewhere.

Hey, I'm kinda new to this site, but I don't get the P4P rankings at all... How are you gonna rank Faber above Brown when Brown just handed him his ass again (altho Faber broke his hand). Rampage should be a little higher on the list and Faber shouldn't be there at all. Now if it's regarding the potential of the CA kid movin up in weight, it's all hypothetical and can't be defended IMO. My top 5 is the same but here's my 6-10: 6. BJ Penn 7. Mike Thomas Brown 8. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson 9. Thiago Alves 10. Rashad Evans (w/ Forrest closing in)
  4. NECROPHYTE Says:

Rogers should be like #12. He ain't earned top 10 yet.

I dont buy into rampage at all. Luckily for me, "suga" will be knocking his ass out soon enough. I like Brown but Im afraid Aldo is going to seriously hurt him.
  15. SlapjawAckrite Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 03:06

Josh Barnett is not worthy of #2. The only reason he is ranked that high is because of his upcoming FIGHT WITH FEDOR. Look at his last few fights...couldn't finish a washed up Yvel from the mount...knocked out an old, washed up Rizzo (and looked like shit doing it). Decisioned Monson, and beat Yoshida. Before that, got beat by Nog.
  16. SlapjawAckrite Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 03:08

And no way will Suga ko Rampage. Knocking out Liddell's hard as a packing peanut chin doesn't mean you can KO page, who has a very tough chin.

@ MyFightWiffaCheeto "Arlovski is not Top Ten anymore" Who the fuck would take your comments seriously? You think Barnett is overrated and seem to have know idea he already beat the shit out of Couture years ago.
  19. portland mma Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 03:53

Yeah but I think Couture would take Barnett in the rematch. Also I think Condit deserves to be on there more than Nick Thompson, what Yves Edwards tap Thompson in like 4 seconds? Condit did lose his last fight but I think Kampmann is one of the most underrated dudes in the game. And fucking please people the Nick Diaz weed jokes are more than retarded, you can only say marijuanaplata so many fucking times.
  20. ScrambledEggs Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 03:57

portland mma Says,"Yeah but I think Couture would take Barnett in the rematch." WHY? What the fuck did you see in the first fight that would possibly make you think that Randy Couture could beat Josh Barnett now? Not to even mention the fact that people can't seem to get it into their fucking heads Randy is going to be 46 fucking years old at the end of the month!
  21. portland mma Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 03:58

My bad the goat got choked out by Shields hella fast not Edwards, it was Edwards that got beat by that little bitch KJ Noons in under a minute.
  22. portland mma Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 04:06

The fact that the fight was like 7 or 8 years ago, I think Randy has gotten a ton better than the first time they fought regardless of his age. Also the best guy Barnett has fought in the past 3 years is a guy who isn't in most top 10 rankings (Monson). You have to go back to September of 06 to find his last quality win and he didn't look that decent against Yvel.
  23. Old_Bald_and_Irish Says:

    Wed, 06/17/09 - 05:44

Barnett at #2?.....ahhh...I don't think so. Over Mir? Come on. Brett Rogers at #10?...good call. Arvovski out of the top ten?...another good call, thanks to Rogers. Rua at #5? Debatable; but (sadly) justified when you look at who's under him. One question: No room for Nick Diaz on that list? Think about it. Give Compton some love. I mean, ya got Gomi on the lis...hey, waitaminute... Gomi's off the list!
  24. RJeezy Says:

So I just looked at your and mmaweekly's rankings and I was getting all ready to throw up a fit about how they had Couture over Lesnar, and then you go ahead and have Alves over Fitch. I think if a fighter beats another he should be ranked above him (unless if something like Alves beating St. Pierre happens; then it's deserving) so I think Fitch should be a notch or two up. But also I thought it was funny that mmaweekly has Florian ranked as the #6 lightweight. I can't wait 'til his fight with B.J., and I can't wait to see how their rankings change afterwards.

CagePotato ‘Power Rankings’ Updated

Thiago Alves UFC’>
(Comin’ for that #1 spot…)

2008 is shaping up to be the busiest and most exciting year in MMA’s history — which is a great thing, unless you’re trying to keep your top ten lists current, in which case it’s a total pain in the ass. Though there aren’t many profound changes in the latest update to our Power Rankings page, recent events have caused some fighters to drop due to losses (i.e., Matt Hughes, Sean Sherk, Hayato Sakurai, Masakazu Imanari) some to jump up after big wins (Wanderlei Silva, Thiago Alves, Power Rankings newcomer Gegard Mousasi), and some to secure their already impressive positions (Lyoto Machida, Urijah Faber, Robbie Lawler). Give it a look, and click on each weight class for additional notes and to leave comments. And stay tuned, as Sunday’s DREAM.4 card could produce some changes in the middleweight list, and July 21st’s Affliction event could lead to a massive re-shuffling of the heavyweight deck.

So Dan Henderson loses a razor-thin decision in a 5-round fight to the #1 guy and has recent wins of Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort, but isn't even top 10 in that division? Why are people writing him off so easily? He's a truly great fighter and has performed very well at 205.
  3. godzillad Says:

You guys need to stop being scared of the fucking blogoshphere and take Fedor off the #1 spot. The goddamn guy has only fought mark an OK Mark Hunt since August 2005, three fucking years ago. You guys didn't keep Frank Shamrock as the #1 Light Heavyweight after he left the UFC did you? Same fucking thing.
  4. norremo Says:

CP - your list blows. Please remove Fedor from the number one spot. Also - your anit-UFC mentality shines straight through these rankings. Jake Shields? Give me a break you fuck tard. Go eat shit and stuff these biased BS rankings and shove them straight up your ass. After that go do your puke/vomit dare. Once done continue by eating your vomit. btw. This site rocks, but the rankings blow

Pulver doesn't even get a token entry in the featherweight rankings? Sure, he got the shit kicked out of him, but he lasted five rounds! That doesn't even warrant a #6 spot?
  8. Blackleg Says:

    Thu, 06/12/08 - 09:55

lol ah yes the wash of hate that always follows updated power rankings. I gotta agree with Fedor needing to drop the fuck down, I've had more meaningful fights with the urge to scratch my taint in the last 5 years. I don't think Big Brother Diaz should be on there until he shows he can complete an event without pissing cupfuls of THC. Pulver should be up there though, he did a hell of a lot more with Faber than anyone else has in the last few years.
  9. ithertz Says:

So, most of you guys think Fedor shouldn't be #1...so then should Nogueira be #1? You mean the guy Fedor CRUSHED repeatedly? Oh, that makes sense now that I think about it. Next you guys will say that Tim Sylvia is the best pound for pound fighter.

Lyoto Runs for three rounds against a washed up Tito and he moves up to #2. Why isn't Starns the best pound for pound then. If Fedor retired today and never fought again would that mean you would rank him as number one forever. With the talent he has been fighting he may as well retire. Dan Henderson has destroyed the who's who of mma in two weight classes and should be in the top 3 in both weight classes. WTF...Do you watch the fights? Web site rocks thanks guys!

Fedor is on top where he should be. The same position when he takes out Timmay! Sylvia. On top, or laying on his side bending his arm. I believe Barnett should be way-way up there, even Ben Rothwell should climb the totem pole. But Timmay? Remember him and Arlovski (sp?) having a jabbing match for the UFC belt? Five fucking rounds of jabs? That's not fighting! That's not a fighter! No love for Arlovski either, he's was in that sparring match too -that fucking jabber! The #1 ie..Fedor fights to win. He will aggressively pursue Timmay! like an andaconda that wants to squeeze the life of his opponent and devour him whole. Then send him through the poop shute only for reasons that result in humility. Like a tarnished UFC belt covered in poo. Maybe I'm being to harsh, but since my beloved truck was stolen last week, I'm reminded of the $50 bucks stolen from me when I purchased that PPV slapping match. Then I go through the cycle of anger, sleepless nights of crying and cursing then to the couch of overeating and drinking (mostly overdrinking) until I wind up at CP for my venting. Now I gotta pee in the yard to mark my domain. Stay back thiefs!
  17. teachbug Says:

    Fri, 06/13/08 - 01:06

I think if you aren't in the UFC your ranking dont matter, its been said, and proven that pride, and all others are second rate, and even set up, so until fedor comes to the UFC all the scrubs, including timmy-boy, that he beats dont make him shit....except scared of the big time.
  18. dandaman Says:

    teachbug, you fail at trolling
  19. sol Says:

    Fri, 06/13/08 - 04:52

@teachbug - not all the top fighters come to the ufc because of the exclusive contract thing. Alot of fighters like contracts where they can fight in different organisations and choose their opponents regardless of affiliation. Look at some of the fighters in the top 10's in middleweight downwards, the non-ufc guys definitely deserve to be on there as they would tear up most of the ufc guys in the respective divisions.
  20. PotatoHead Says:

    Fri, 06/13/08 - 04:59

@Participant... That was one of the funniest short stories I've ever read! Cheer up though, your truck will turn up, eventually. Mine always does. Anyhow, when it comes to rankings, it's not a science and you'll never please everbody all the time. I think you guys, as always... did a damn good job. My 2 cents: Keep Fedor at #1, move Couture to #2... Forrest at #4 is generous... and, as much as he's slipped, Hughes would still mostly likely destroy Diego Sanchez. Also, call me sentimental, but I'd like to have seen Matt Serra in the top 5. Watch for him to put Hughes to sleep in 2. In conclusion... CAGE POTATO is the undisputed Heavyweight Champion MMA site in the universe!!! Only a fool would argue with that. Any fools out there?
  21. teachbug Says:

dandyman thinks Im a troll :) truth hurts like a mofo huh dandyman. nothing to back up your mouth but more mouth, meanwhile I said the truth backed up BY truth, and you think Im a troll for daring to have different opinion than yours. wow you are awesome you swayed me to your side with your clever and intelligent, and well thought out use of any MMA knowledge, cause as we all know it takes great skill to call someone a name. Therefore your ranking is #1.......in the shit-talking championship. better train hard, Tito has heard about you, and hes coming for your belt. sol actually used MMA knowledge to form his rebutal....but Im sure dandygirl will call him a troll as well, cause all us trolls know stuff and it bothers mouths. to Sol: yes indeed I know you are right about the fighters who want to be able to fight in different businesses and not be tied down to a certain company or contract, and I even understand it from a business aspect, but sadly the best in the world right now are in UFC, to be the best you gotta beat the best, even if it means giving up some freedoms to prove it. I just wish UFC was more lenient and allowed cross-company fights. they would still be the big dog, plus they would make a ton on MMA fans who are forced to pick loyaltys in organizations instead of individual fighters.

i hugely disagree with most of the placements. the most awkward being: HW: fedor SURELY isnt #1, nogueira doubtfully can be #2 LHW: Not sure machida can be #2, i doubt he could beat most of your top 10 list. jardine surely isnt so high as #8 WW: I dont think fitch can be placed so high, but we'll find that out soon enough. koscheck cant be #5
  23. Andrej Says:

Didn't David Baron beat Hayato Sakurai? Yet you have Sakurai ahead of him in your rankings so does that mean you don't care if a person win's or not???????? Come on if you beat someone you should take there rating shouldn't you?
