CagePotato Power Rankings Updated

(Rampage mean-mugs his way back to #2. Photo courtesy of the Las Vegas Sun.)

In the wake of UFC 92′s wild string of upsets, we’ve updated the light-heavyweight and heavyweight top ten lists in our Power Rankings section. Some notes:

Rashad Evans takes the #1 spot at 205 pounds. The UFC’s light-heavyweight division is still a shark tank where almost any fighter could be the best on a given day, but I think Sugar has the skills to defend his belt at least once. Evans/Rampage could be epic; let’s hope it happens soon.

Frank Mir jumps to #4 following back-to-back wins over the UFC’s two best heavyweights. That is just craaaaaazy. If Mir can beat Brock Lesnar a second time and unify the heavyweight title, it’ll be one of the most miraculous career comebacks in MMA history.

— I’d love to get some new blood into the bottom of the heavyweight list, but it’ll have to wait until Shane Carwin and Gabriel Gonzaga have their fight in March, or until Dave Herman, Antonio Silva, Alistair Overeem, or Sergei Kharitonov beat a highly-ranked opponent.

Head over to the rankings page to toss in your own opinions, and keep an eye on the lightweight list this week, as four of the top ten fighters will be competing in MMA matches at Fields Dynamite!! 2008 on New Year’s Eve.

1 thing jay smith chuck is old and evans lost tthe tito fight imo.bisping took him to a decision and forresst won the first two rounds evans is good but not that good i bet he dont even defend his belt you fucking he look at chuck in the suloev fight or bustamante or monson or tito fights.he has clearly aged he is slower fatter and dont throw leg kicks want me to be impresed because he caught an old chuck yr a joke m8. love griffin but the real tests are t silva machida luis cain rampage and maybe a silva so he can put that belt out of sight because in the ufc u have to beat the best to earn the belt where as evans has not beat the you think evans will be dominating the division when he is 39 like he will be getting fuck kicked outa him by up and comers times a bitch show some respect.i picked rampage to win it looks like you need to learn more about mma if you carnt tell when a fighters near the end or the beginning of their career forget about roll you might aswell say you dont like british people they did something right with rampage and are getting more and more good fighters.go back a page and you will see taylor giving litle a toe nail sandwich ouch wolfslair had 2 fighters at ufc 92 and 2 wins both yr mums need a shave.
Just a fight fan- December 29, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Oh and how can Forrest stay on the P4P list and Evans not get a nod at all?
Just a fight fan- December 29, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Ummm... someone wanna tell CP that Franklin went fatty and ran from the middle weight division cause he didn't want to be the Spider's fly anymore?
RF: What? Silva likes to dip into the 205'ers sometimes? Shit! Pass the twinkies, I'm going to heavyweight.

someone should update the ring girls list; i missed the new girl

@ joe joe, jeff:Oh yeah, I forgot to update the Pound-for-Pound list.  Will get to that soon...
TUF Guy- December 29, 2008 at 10:45 am
Jay Smith, shut your 132 lb. ass up. I know more about farming shrimp than you do about MMA and I don't know jack shit about farming shrimp.
Creamy CA Roll- December 29, 2008 at 10:41 am
@ Jay Smith

I went 0 for 3 on the last card and I was wrong with Couture & Lesnar, but I wasn't picking them by popularity. With Rampage, I picked Wandy because of the mental edge from the first two fights, plus I just don't like British training camps and the fighters they produce. And the next season of TUF is gonna have 4 US semifinalists.

So, does that still qualify me as a bitch ass mutha fucka?
Sodak- December 29, 2008 at 10:37 am
I picked wandi not ashamed to admit it, he's still 1 fight up on page and i'd pick him again in the rematch, mir was a fucking shock but i knew forest was gonna get ko'd. GOOOOOOOOOO! hellboy!
Jay Smith- December 29, 2008 at 10:14 am
I just want to know where all you bitch ass mutha fuckas are at that were talkin all that shit about Rampage, Evans, and Mir. How come you ain't talkin now??? I know you guys remember how a lot of people on this site were saying that Rampage was going to get fucked up, and how he was unstable. NOW WHAT? Who will admit to being one of those people? You mufuckas pick your favorite fighters on their popularity, not on skills. Learn the sport bitches! Mir looked fuckin great! You'd have to be a fool to say otherwise. And Evans took your poster boys belt EASILY! Evans is the shit!!!
After Silva kicks the fuck out of Machida, maybe that will teach him that at some point, you have to actually fight to be considered a good fighter.
knightrida- December 29, 2008 at 9:54 am
Machida deserves a shot with Evans before Rampage. Both fighters are undefeated which would make a great bout. There's no reason he gets a shot before Machida. He should have to win 2 fights before another title shot. Word is bon.
Jeff- December 29, 2008 at 9:10 am
The overall rankings are not to my liking. IMO:

1. Fedor Emelianenko
2. Anderson Silva
3. GSP
4. BJ Penn
5. Miguel Torres
6. Thiago Alves
7. Quinton Jackson
8. Rashad Evans
9. Urijah Faber / Mike Brown
10. Minotauro / Frank Mir

Joe joe- December 29, 2008 at 8:54 am
You have Evans ahead of forrest at 205, but not on the pound for pound..

might want to change that..

Uncle Sams Miguided Child (USMC)- December 29, 2008 at 8:53 am
^^ Did I say alves I meant T Silva. Also I kow some of you are gonna gawk at the Jardine thing but I really think he has what it takes to be a champ some day. I would love to see Jardine Liddell 2.
Uncle Sams Miguided Child (USMC)- December 29, 2008 at 8:46 am
Page vs Griffin 2 needs to happen with the winner to face the winner of Evans vs Machida or Alves. This is the most probable outcome in my mind. I would also like to see Jardine get a respectable win streak and title shot.
jesus fucking christ- December 29, 2008 at 8:46 am
Mir showed respect to Nogueira. he can say whatever the hell he wants about Brock.
TUF Guy- December 29, 2008 at 8:39 am
Rampage - Evans has to happen ASAP.

I want that fight in March! No excuses.
turdle420- December 29, 2008 at 8:29 am
the only people that bitch about Cantwell and Mir being excited about breaks are lil douches that shouldn't watch the sport. You can't hurt someone or make them tap if you aren't trying to break the limb you have a hold of. If you don't tap you get broke. i hope Mir beats Lesnar in all aspects of his game.
Snuffy- December 29, 2008 at 8:25 am
"Very respectable comments? Calling out Lesnar and saying he's gonna make him famous for his next break is respectable? Almost everyone on this site was shocked at a 22 year old Steve Cantwell being excited when he popped Razak Al-Hassan's arm... but I guess an arrogant douche like Mir saying pretty much the same thing is respectable. Oh and go watch how happy Mir was about breaking Sylvia's arm in that post fight interview. WAR LESNAR!"

Thats right, damn it !

CagePotato Power Rankings Updated!

(They…can’t…touch…him. Photo credit: MMAWeekly)

In the wake of UFC 82, Cage Rage 25, WEC 32, Sengoku 1 and DREAM 1, we’ve put together a long-overdue update to our Power Rankings page. Check it out, and be sure to click on each individual weight division to read our comments and leave your own. Some notable developments since last time:

— Yes, Anderson Silva is the best fighter in the world right now.
— Our middleweight list underwent a complete deck-reshuffling, with Henderson, Lawler, and Lindland sinking in the rankings due to losses, injuries, and inactivity.
Masakazu Imanari‘s recent performance (and title grab) at Cage Rage moves him up to the third-ranked featherweight in the world, after Urijah and “Kid.”
— The top half of the heavyweight rankings list remains in stalemate, and there were virtually no changes to the light-heavyweight top ten; expect chaos to ensue beginning in May.
— Sokoudjou is off our light-heavy list. We just couldn’t justify including a guy with only six pro fights, two of which he actually lost.
— We’ve included a two-person tie for the first time, at the #10 slot of the welterweight list. The decision was too difficult to make; let us know how you feel.

Now for the LW......JZ is at the top? I mean I like the guy, and he's top ten material....but number one? didn't he lose to hansen? weird. and if gomi gets submitted via gogo plata, that has to rule him out of top 5 i would think. i couldn't even submit your mom with a fucking gogo plata.

and what in the hell is roger huerta doing up there? who the fuck has he beat besides clay guida, (dominated first two rounds) who seems to be developing into a decent gatekeeper for the ufc lightweights....but really, in his place couldn't you have used one of the ufc's more proven LW's? frankie edgar perhaps? or even tyson griffin, the only man to have defeated your number one featherweight? it just doesn't make sense

Featherweights are not really worth mentioning

and to place JZ at number 4 on the pound for pound list just blows my mind. we need to see more from him before we jump the gun. i think it's safe to say you are avidly boning Calvancanti
Steve-O- March 18, 2008 at 12:17 am
With the welterweights, how can you have Karo and Diego up there and no Kos? And you list Jake Shields above those guys and Aoki? maybe you think he's cute...but I hear he's trying to call out frank shamrock, i would love to see frank smash him.
Steve-O- March 17, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Light-heavy is pretty good...but why doesn't jardine get more love? i mean look at the two guys directly above him!

From middleweight down is where it just gets stupid. Granted, those ten middleweights are the only ones that even exist on the planet, so they'd have to be in the top 10, but the order is horrendous. Filho is still up there, seriously? I figured since his previous poor performance it was pretty much known that even though he has a spotless record it's apparently due to the lack of worthy competition he was facing. And maybe I'm a little bias cuz I hate several of those middleweights, but jesus I just wish Lindland would die.
Steve-O- March 17, 2008 at 11:50 pm
these rankings are ridiculous. i somewhat agree with some of it, but my god, it's almost like someone is just name dropping over there. I pretty much agree with your HW stuff (for lack of a better list of my own) but you ruined it with your rebuttle in the comment above. you mention people not beating good fighters recently....well who the hell is at the top of your list and who has he beaten recently?
Buddha- March 17, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I actually like the rankings a lot, I do not see anyway to justify Cro Cop or Aleks over Rothwell. Rothwell is on a streak like none other, where as Cro Cop is crushing cans in Japan and Aleks is doing god knows what. As for Barnett, he is great the talent and will find himself rising up the rankings, he just needs some more legit fights.
Kim Couture is a cunt- March 17, 2008 at 5:35 pm
@ the big POTATO

Sounds like a deal sir. ; )
CagePotato- March 17, 2008 at 6:47 am
@ KCiac:

If Rothwell goes another couple months without booking his next fight, you got yourself a deal.
Rich S.- March 17, 2008 at 6:19 am
how do you justify putting okami above Hendo??
hmmm.. let's see.. Hendo has lost two straight.. and his next opponent will probably be a can or a low ranked fighter..
Okami has WON two straight.. and his next opponent will probably be the MW champ, and best fighter in the world, Anderson Silva..
Kim Couture is a cunt- March 17, 2008 at 5:52 am
Maybe put Rothwell at 10 at push AE out. I could agree with that.
Kim Couture is a cunt- March 17, 2008 at 5:51 am
@ the Big Potato ---------------------------

Point taken---- I agree with your logic in all your points regarding those three fighters. However, until Ben Rothwell beats a top ten fighter or even fights one for that matter, lets give at least Mirko and Josh the benefit of the doubt.
CagePotato- March 17, 2008 at 5:31 am
@ KCIAC, Fbomb, etc.:

You people are just too sentimental about the names Barnett, Cro Cop, and A. Emelianenko. Becoming a legend (and make no mistake, Aleks never was one) doesn't mean you get to be on the top ten list forever. Certainly not ours...

Barnett: Years past his prime. Hasn't defeated a good fighter in 18 months. May be fighting cans for the rest of his career.

Cro Cop: Career is on the downswing and his heart may no longer be in the game. Hasn't defeated a good fighter in 18 months. May be fighting cans for the rest of his career.

Aleks E.: Has never, ever beaten anyone significant. Was finished by all three of the top-tier fighters he's faced. Post PRIDE, his career is completely rudderless.

Ben Rothwell: 13 straight wins. The most dominant non-UFC heavyweight competing in America. Career is on the upswing. Hasn't yet achived his full potential. You'll see.
JANKE- March 17, 2008 at 2:18 am
i dont see how you justify ranking okami over hendo at middleweight. most of these lists are very very flawed
lolwut- March 17, 2008 at 1:33 am
Cp editor is slitting his wrists as we speak cause noone likes him anymore lol
Rich S.- March 17, 2008 at 1:28 am
i can assure you that all of Fedor's fights lately have, in fact, been against REAL HW fighters.. he wasn't just punching air.. douche bag.. give the man his credit..
Fbomb- March 17, 2008 at 12:37 am
"Randy is good but not that good" - classic quote from a retard TUF fan. KCIAC is right by the way, there is NO WAY Ben Rothwell should be ranked in front of those three ESPECIALLY A.E> and Josh Barnett.
Sean- March 17, 2008 at 12:11 am
Randy shouldnt be that high he is good not that good. And two FEDOR should be at least 5 for p4p. Kim couture is a peon who is going to blow through Dandy Randy's money.
Kim Couture is a cunt dumb ass- March 16, 2008 at 11:33 pm
everyone is entitled to their opinion so go cry me a a bridge...and get over!!!!!!! Not everyone agrees and that is why you couldve said i dont think your HW rankings are correct n left a ranking that you thought was correct!!!!!
Kim Couture is a cunt- March 16, 2008 at 11:09 pm
......just checking back. Cage Potato has officially lost a bit of cred with me. Ben Rothwell in front of those three guys is an absolute fuckin travesty and embarassing. How can I tell my friends about how great Cage potato is when you have that fuckin bullshit in your HW rankings, get a fuckin grip.
Jemaleddin- March 16, 2008 at 10:47 pm
And WTF is Fedor still doing on the top of the list when he hasn't had a real fight against a real heavyweight in over 3 years? Seriously?

Kim Couture is a cunt- March 16, 2008 at 10:15 pm
WTF is Ben Rothwell doing in front of Alex, Josh and Mirko. That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Think about that for a second, I'lll check back later to see if youv'e changed it after some thought.
