CagePotato Presents: A Mostly Video Tribute to the Standing TKO

(James Thompson, seen here demonstrating the CagePotato “What in the bloody hell are you on about, mate?” rule of early stoppages.)

Over the past few days, we’ve witnessed a pair of rarely seen finishes in the octagon — a suplex KO and a flying reverse triangle — and after we here at CagePotato collectively picked our jaws up off the floor and found a clean pair of shorts, we got to thinking, what other techniques/finishes do we rarely come across in the MMA stratosphere? And more importantly, which of these techniques/finishes have we not devoted some sort of gif or video tribute to already?

Taking all of those factors into account, we came to the standing TKO, a finish so uncommon in MMA that we could only name a handful of occurrences before having to resort to the Interwebs for assistance. So in honor of the iron-jawed sumbitches who wouldn’t bow to defeat even when it was kneeing/punching/kicking them damn near to death, we’ve placed our favorite examples of this phenomenon below. Check ‘em out after the jump and let us know which stoppages you thought were warranted and which ones could have gone on a little longer.

The Justified Stoppages

Hermes Franca vs. Spencer Fisher – UFC Fight Night 8

Matt Brown vs. Luis Ramos – UFC on FX 4

Paul Daley vs. Martin Kampmann – UFC 103

For some reason, the embeddable is being a dingus, so check out the full fight here.

Jason Day vs. Alan Belcher – UFC 83

Frank Trigg vs. I can't remember. I remember Trigg being a bitch about it though.

@dipset and mma4ever
It's called a technicality. I was half joking, just trying to float a missed fight that I wasn't expecting to be acknowleged. But I stand by my Miocic vs Struve fight because when the Ref stopped it he was still standing. Plus, that tough sum-abitch took a beating just as noble as any of the other candidates that were on this list.

Did Pat Curran vs Joe Warren end on the feet or did the ref wait until he fell on that one? It should have been a standing knockout even if it wasn't called there. Certainly classed under downright shameful.

ah yes, when I read the article again. It clearly states "standing TKO." My bad. I guess I should Google the term, comprehension.
MorningwoodII- December 19, 2012 at 10:56 am
it was on the ground so maybe that's away from the spirit of the article. But Mir's face was a mess afterwards.
MorningwoodII- December 19, 2012 at 10:54 am
what about Lesnar vs. Mir II?

Ah, thanks. I don't know how I missed the "Next Page" link the first time I looked at this. Good. I'm glad that one made the list. I saw a replay of that fight at an airport bar years ago. It was one of the first UFC clips I'd ever seen. I was hooked.

What about the Phil Baroni KO of Dave Menne? Menne was standing up against the fence when the ref called it. Then he hit the ground like a bag of wet poop. But only then.
smellypiratehooker- December 19, 2012 at 9:51 am
I know that I am reaching a bit and I think that it was a KO, but he wasn't grounded.
smellypiratehooker- December 19, 2012 at 9:49 am
job well done. almost threw out there Sylvia vs Cabbage but that was corner stoppage and you mentioned it. So, I'm gonna go with Anthony Johnson vs Tommy Speer.
