In Case You Missed It — "Fight Camp 360: Fedor vs. Rogers"

For Brett Rogers, the challenge on Saturday will be to strip away the myth from Fedor Emelianenko and approach him like he's any other man. Which he is, of course. Fedor, as we saw last night on Fight Camp 360, is just a guy who loves his family and God, who works out in a community gym alongside schoolchildren, who still lives in the small mining town he grew up in, who enjoys a good oak-twig whipping in a Russian sauna. It's unnerving how normal Fedor is. His priest/BFF, Father Andrey, says: "You can feel the kindness come out of him, and when you communicate with him, you are being charged by his kindness." Really? Are we talking about the same guy who did this to Gary Goodridge?
In the end, Fedor's success is still a mystery that Fight Camp 360 doesn't provide many answers to. But we do learn a little more about Brett Rogers. His upbringing, in Chicago's notorious Cabrini-Green public housing ghetto, has clearly inspired his will to fight as well as his desire to build a better life for his children. As Brett gets his mohawk tight-'n'-right before the fight, his grandmother calls him and tells him that she won't be watching because she can't stand to see him get hit. He tells her, "It's not going to be that kind of situation. He's not gonna run me, I'm gonna run him." He tells reporters: "I'm gonna have to do work all over his face...Lights out, two and a half, first round...I'm gonna go out there, I'm gonna knock the shit out this dude."
Meanwhile, Fedor's coaches watch the Grim's fight tapes and give us their unimpressed analysis: "Big fellow. Cool haircut. Nice shorts."

in terms of production value...
Dana is quick to criticize the guys at Showtime, but that show was way better than the drivel that the UFC throws together to promote fights.

1. Old Fights with ridiculous sound effects and explosions when people are hit

I was pleasantly surprised how insightful this show was. The UFC shows are like watching one of their tacky commercial with two fighters saying "I'm going to beat his ass", over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Fedor is at a strange level where he has almost nothing to gain from his fights anymore. If he wins, we all kind of expected it and all of the neigh sayers (UFC Fan) say he hasn't fought anyone. But if he loses everyone says he was all hype and blah blah blah...
Personally I've seen him fight live twice and also saw his grappling expo with Mousasi in Kansas a while back, and I'm amazed at how good he is. He moves amazingly fast for a heavyweight and you can hear an echo in the arena when his punches land. I'm excited to see this fight (on tv this time though)

Yeah, this is undeniably better than the pre-fight UFC promotional stuff. Better production (or should I say not so overproduced, lacking the crazy flashes and ragged color overlays that the UFC vids tend to over use) and somewhat more insightful. I like that they went for a more subtle and polished approach and decided to portray the fighters as normal human beings rather than a couple of well-trained Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots.
And @ UFC fan: Calm down, man. Isn't it enough that your namesake is the winner in the MMA promotion game? Why the anger? What are you hiding?

Showtime does a good job trying to humanize the fighters unlike UFC which tries to hide the fact that their fighters are actually thoughtful, emotional, at time fragile human beings. UFC tries to make everyone a machine, some kind of unfeeling character that we don't have to feel bad about them getting their heads smashed in. I like actually caring about the guys in the fight and seeing the struggles they go through to fight.
It's why I hate TUF reality show so much. Fighters don't get state of the art gyms and superstar trainers, that isn't reality. Reality is a guy working at freakin' sams club in Minneapolis or at his home gym in no where Russia actually making real sacrifices for the sport. Staying away from your family in a paid house, with free food and booze and nothing to do but train all day isn't a sacrifice, it's a vacation.
